THE NEWS: North Koreans forcibly mobilized for dangerous state construction projects

North Koreans forcibly mobilized for dangerous state construction projects

source: dailynk

Mobilized North Korans work on a railroad construction project connecting Wiyon and Samjiyon County in Ryanggang Province. Taken in July 2017. Image: Daily NKMost employees at state-run companies in the mid-1990s were only laborers in name; they were technically unemployed because the state was not providing them with rations or wages. The labor market did not exist in North Korea when the country had a functioning planned economy. Residents were simply required to work almost their entire lives in the job that was designated to them by the state. The country’s newly emerging labor market has since rendered this old system obsolete, but there remain some state-run companies that keep their employees for life.

A monthly wage at a state-run company would not even allow an employee to purchase one kilogram of rice and the meager rations of corn and potatoes the state provided was insufficient to survive on. The “Arduous March” of the mid-1990s to early 2000s caused a great deal of economic recession and starvation.

The North Korean government’s employment system has more or less disappeared, and in its place has risen an informal but active labor market ecosystem. These labor markets have become the basis for the country’s economy.

The country, however, still faces numerous economic challenges, including how it will raise the quality of its labor force, whether laborers have the skills that the labor market requires, and how it will deal with the massive rise in its elderly population.

North Korea observers are frequently surprised at the extent to which manual labor still maintains a massive presence in the country. They are also surprised that the North Korean state expresses its hearty support for all of this manual labor.

The North Korean state relies on manual labor to construct railways, houses, roads, power plants, and even to dig tunnels. In North Korea’s mines, male and female laborers are known to lug 20-30 kilogram bags of ore on their shoulders.

Daily NK sources in South Hamgyong Province report that laborers forcibly mobilized in backbreaking physical labor at a power plant construction site in Tanchon, South Hamgyong Province, survive on boiled potatoes. The residents of the area are almost at the point of starvation.

The construction of the power plant is important to the state, so the authorities provide corn and potatoes. However, these provisions are far from sufficient to fill the bellies of manual laborers. Moreover, the chronically hungry laborers are exposed to a number of dangers and there are continued incidents that lead to injuries and even fatalities.

The North Korean authorities employ residents as cheap labor and make little effort to mechanize anything that can be done manually. The state portrays manual labor as something of a duty that patriotic and loyal citizens are required to undertake for the state.

The North Korean state must legalize the informal labor market and allow it to grow so that it forms a strong basis for economic development in the country.

The labor market requires particular skills and education from laborers and can provide good salaries for qualified candidates. North Korean laborers will be encouraged to learn new skills and pursue higher education. Companies will benefit by having a better prepared and highly trained workforce.

A free labor market will transition North Korea away from its low-skilled, manual labor-centered economy to one that cultivates laborers who are educated and skilled, while providing better living conditions for its workers.

North Korea recently emphasized “science education” as a way to create new economic growth at the 3rd Plenary Session of the 7th Korean Workers’ Party. However, there is first a need to create a free labor market that cultivates the talent the market requires, rather than simply compelling workers to satisfy the needs of the country.

THE NEWS: Time will soon tell whether Kim Jong Un wants to denuclearize

source: DailyNK
Kim Jong Un arrives in Singapore ahead of the June 12 summit between the United States and North Korea. Image: Ministry of Communications and Information, Singapore
The third clause of the June 12 US-DPRK Summit agreement states the following:

“Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

The document declares that the two sides will “reaffirm” the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration, but that this must follow the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is stated clearly in the second clause of the Panmunjom Declaration: “South and North Korea will make joint efforts to alleviate the acute military tension and practically eliminate the danger of war on the Korean Peninsula.” This refers to the halting of US-ROK military exercises.

As President Trump announced the US-DPRK agreement to the world, he also called for the halting of US-ROK joint military exercises. The basis for this was included in the Panmunjom Declaration. Clause 2, Paragraph 1 of the Declaration states that: “South and North Korea agree to completely cease all hostile acts against each other in every domain, including land, air and sea, that are the source of military tension and conflict.”

It appears Kim Jong Un may be strategically exploiting the rift in the US-ROK relationship through the inter-Korean and US-DPRK summits. In May, one month before Kim Jong Un met with Trump, a short story of reverence to Kim Jong Un entitled “The Awaiting Bosom” published in the North Korean Writer’s Alliance Central Committee’s magazine “Chosun Literature” strongly criticized the joint US-ROK military exercises. The short story included the following:

“The military exercises by the enemy have now moved from being just rare instances in terms of their characteristics, size and methods; they have become trial runs for an actual war. The reports compiled by the General Staff show that the enemies’ movements are dangerous. The enemies are frantically trying to suppress the Republic (DPRK) and are scheming to conduct new military exercises aimed at destroying the Revolution’s central command.”

The short story continued along these lines and strongly condemned the joint US-ROK military exercises. The halting of US-ROK military exercises was likely top of the agenda when Kim Jong Un met with Trump.

Ultimately, Kim persuaded Trump of his views and Trump even portrayed Kim as a victor in his steadfast support of the Panmunjom Declaration. Trump proclaimed that Kim was loved by all his people and claims that he and Kim work well together. Trump has been encouraged greatly by the disappearance of anti-American slogans in North Korea and has given the North Korean despot a “good grade” for his alleged efforts to denuclearize, emphasizing the mutual trust he shares with Kim and deciding to temporarily halt the joint US-ROK military exercises.

After the US-DPRK summit, however, there have been no follow-up meetings between the two sides. Democratic and Republican members of the US Senate have introduced a bill to set “stringent” oversight over the progress of US negotiations with North Korea and the situation surrounding denuclearization, requiring a report from the Administration every 30 days. The proposed bill stipulates that sanctions against North Korea must continue until significant and verifiable progress has been made toward denuclearization. It also proposes that the US cannot begin negotiations on the withdrawal of US troops in South Korea.

The US Senate has essentially stood up to Trump, who described Kim Jong Un as “someone who really loves his country.” North Korea’s state media may indeed angrily claim that the actions of the US Senate have defamed the North Korean leader. This would inevitably lead again to the spreading of anti-American slogans across the pages of the regime’s newspapers.

If that happens, Trump would have to again take a hard line against Kim and push for clear affirmation of Kim’s intent to denuclearize the Peninsula along with real evidence to support this. Trump cannot continue to focus simply on the fourth paragraph of the US-DPRK Summit’s agreement that refers to the repatriation of the remains of fallen US POWs.

Time will soon reveal the sincerity behind Kim Jong Un’s overtures to denuclearize. In the meantime, we are left with a halting of US-ROK military exercises and the potential for American troop withdrawal from South Korea on the horizon.

THE NEWS: Defector with Lou Gehrig’s Disease finds tranquility in South Korea

Defector with Lou Gehrig’s Disease finds tranquility in South Korea

North Korean defector and Lou Gehrig’s Disease patient Jo Son Suk (third from left), and her support network. Image: Jo Son Suk “I have shooting pain in my neck, arms, and legs – as if I’m being electrocuted. The pain can become excruciating. My fingers are so weak that I can’t use a computer and I can hardly hold a single piece of paper. Holding a pencil with my thumbs, I can slowly write one letter at a time.”

This excerpt is from a letter sent by Jo Son Suk to Daily NK on June 6.

As knowledge of the Ice Bucket Challenge spreads across the globe, and with a plethora of celebrities helping to shine light on the cause, the nature of Lou Gehrig’s Disease has been brought into the spotlight. In the midst of this, one defector with the disease wishes to tell her story.

Ms. Jo defected from North Korea in 2002 and entered South Korea in 2011. “I was already suffering from liver cancer and my body felt strange, so I went to the hospital. That’s when I first heard the words ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease.’ At that moment, it felt like the sky was caving in. I was overcome with despair,” she recalled.

“As I received treatment for liver cancer, I remained hopeful and have managed to make it this far. But the shock was too great at that moment [at the hospital]. I didn’t even cry. I just stared at the doctor, dumbfounded.”

“Right now, I can’t take a single sip of water or eat a single spoonful of food. I’ve always dreamed of eating good food, exercising, and living healthily, but that dream has fallen to pieces. Previously, my will to live was evaporating,” she continued.

However, Ms. Jo said she has found a great support network in South Korea, which is helping to ease her anguish. Her condition is worsening as the days go by, but she is still feeling more at ease with her predicament.

“South Korea saved my life. I came to this country alone, but when I was getting surgery for liver cancer, people donated blood. South Korea is a country where people matter. For someone like me, who gave up hope, this country has given me the courage to persist.

“Day by day, the disease gets worse, but my heart finds tranquility. That’s because I know that I matter in this country. As I wandered the world, I was abandoned and kicked about like a pebble on the road, but a new seed of hope exists in my heart. I’m so grateful to the Republic of Korea,” Ms. Jo said.

Lou Gehrig’s Disease, also known by the medical name of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a rare condition that affects the nerve cells responsible for muscle movement. It afflicts approximately 1 to 2 people out of every 100,000 per year. While multiple drug treatments are currently under development, a cure remains elusive.

The ice bucket challenge campaign began in America in 2014 for the purpose of raising awareness about the disease.

On May 29, South Korean singer Sean poured a bucket of ice cold water on himself and uploaded the video to social media. Other actors and celebrities in Korea have followed suit, helping to spread the word.

North Korea has reportedly begun preparations to select participants for the upcoming inter-Korean family reunions, set to take place at North’s Mount Kumgang resort from August 20 to 26.

The North Korean authorities have stated that former members of the “volunteer army” (those who supported the Korean People’s Army during the Korean War) have priority, and the state is currently conducting background checks and evaluating the level of their “loyalty” toward the state.

“The process of selecting participants for the divided family reunions is currently ongoing in each region of the country,” said a South Pyongan-based source on July 2. “Those who were born in South Korea and participated in the Korean War as volunteer soldiers are being placed on lists and undergoing background checks.”

“Currently, Korean Workers’ Party representatives are visiting the homes of former volunteer army veterans and assessing their mental health, living conditions, and level of loyalty to the regime,” the source said.

A source in Pyongyang added, “State officials are the only ones who know how many volunteer army veterans there are and how many are still alive. Most of them are more than 80 years old, so there are likely very few left.”

The North Korean authorities have chosen the volunteer army veterans as a priority because of their advanced age and their relatively higher loyalty to the regime. In-depth investigations into the loyalty of such individuals toward the regime and their songbun status (societal status based on family political background and loyalty) are being conducted to determine eligibility.

As inter-Korean relations have rapidly improved, North Koreans with family members who have defected to South Korea are expressing hope in advance of the family reunions.

“Many members of divided families in North Korea were classified as dangers to the state in the 1950s, but they are now allowed to meet with their families in South Korea,” the Pyongyang-based source said.

“Many people here hope that North Korean defectors may also have the chance to meet their families in North Korea again.”

The source in South Pyongan Province explained that because inter-Korean relations have improved, many North Korean state officials have become more light-hearted than in the past.

“A Party official joked that he hoped he could eat a South Korean choco-pie while at the reunions,” she said.

THE NEWS: Kim Jong Un continues to ignore rule of law in public execution of military officer

Kim Jong Un continues to ignore rule of law in public execution of military officer
- source: AFP

The Supreme Court of North Korea. Image: Yonhap News Agency Article 6, Clause 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which North Korea signed in 1981, states that “[e]very human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life.”

Daily NK recently reported that North Korean authorities carried out a public trial at a meeting room in the April 25 House of Culture in Moranbong District, followed by the public execution of Hyon Ju Song, who had held the position of Director of the Inspection Division of the Ministry of People’s Armed Forces General Rear Services Bureau (Lieutenant General of the People’s Army), at a firing range at the Kang Kon Military Academy located in Sunan District, Pyongyang.

The public execution was reportedly carried out on orders from Kim Jong Un, sidestepping procedures stipulated in North Korea’s own Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Act. The officer executed was put to a public trial after Kim had already personally signed off on his execution. In effect, this was in violation of North Korea’s own procedures related to criminal prosecution.

Clause 418 of North Korea’s Criminal Procedure Act states, “Punishments are carried out after a judgement has been made. Executions may only be carried out following permission given by the relevant agency.” In other words, the punishment for the crime should have been finalized after the trial for the execution to have been carried out. The North Korean authorities ignored these legal procedures.

North Koreans in general do not have access to lawyers for representation. It is highly likely that the relevant agency failed to inform the accused officer about the nature of the charges against him.

According to a research article written by North Korea researcher Yu Yong Tae entitled “The Realities Facing Lawyers in the Republic’s (DPRK’s) Criminal Justice System” (Research on Political Law, No. 1, 2006), “The activities of lawyers [in North Korea] are not focused on supporting the rights of the accused. Rather, lawyers support the work of the courts to ensure all criminal cases are handled in accordance with the demands of the Korean Workers’ Party (KWP)’s policies and regulations and a basis in the law of the land.”

North Korean lawyers act to ensure that the charges against the accused match up with the KWP’s policies and thus are little more than prosecutors on the wrong side of the aisle. North Koreans are not allowed to choose their own lawyers, who are instead chosen by a preliminary judge or regular court judge. Lawyers for the defendants are generally disinclined to actually defend their clients at all during the course of a trial.

One defector who experienced the criminal justice system in North Korea told Daily NK on condition of anonymity that North Korean lawyers generally show up for three days at a trial and merely explain to the defendant the process they will be going through. “I was told to just answer “guilty” when the judge asks whether I pleaded guilty or not. It was ridiculous,” he said.

The officer was accused of “falsely reporting on the violence of nuclear weapons” and “making a decision independently about provisions.” The execution may have been an attempt, some say, to prevent any harm from coming to the prestige of the Supreme Leader through the idolization of anyone other than Kim Jong Un.

It is a crime in North Korea for anyone to subvert the authority of the regime. Eleven acts outlawed by the country, including “stealing important national assets” are subject to the death penalty as supplementary provisions of the Criminal Code.

THE NEWS: North Koreans protest unfair market crackdowns

North Koreans protest unfair market crackdown

Under the pretext of eradicating anti-socialist elements, North Korea’s authorities are cracking down on market activity. In reaction, some residents have openly protested the country’s state security officers.

“There was an assessment at the beginning of the month regarding the broad inspections conducted to uncover anti-socialist elements in downtown Hyesan City [located near the border with China]. Residents responded by complaining at the meeting, opposing the censorship in an organized fashion because the order was not being applied equally, and was not carried out very well overall,” a source in Ryanggang Province told Daily NK on June 29.

“Residents were saying, ‘Some houses were searched very lightly, while over 10,000 RMB (~1,500 USD) in cash was taken from others.’ ‘Some people were subject to the crackdown, while others were able to evade it.’ People were openly complaining, ‘If you’re going to steal money, take it from everyone equally!’”

“Those who were out of their homes during the crackdown no doubt got the tip off from the Ministry of State Security (political police). As the crackdown approached, they prepared by taking out all the money and products from their homes and disappeared without a trace. Why did those people get special treatment while the rest of us got hit by a bolt of lightning?” she added.

Crackdowns on the marketplace have eased since the beginning of the Kim Jong Un era, leading to a surge in market activity. However, there have been intermittent measures introduced and implemented by the authorities to stunt and stifle these developments. But North Korea’s residents, taking heed from the regime’s propaganda advising them to “pick themselves up by their own bootstraps,” have come to regard commercial activity as an inherent right.

There have been many confrontations with officials from the Ministry of People’s Security (police) in this regard. However, Ministry of State Security officials, tasked with handling the ideological control of the people, were once regarded as “angels of death,” before the marketization period. But now even their power has been sapped by the changing structure of North Korean society, specifically the shifting values brought on by marketization.

“The residents were busy complaining to the Ministry of State Security agents at the crackdown assessment, saying, ‘What power do we have?’ Facing this pressure from the residents, the investigating agents declined to taken intervening measures and instead hurriedly left the room,” a separate source in Ryanggang Province noted.

Many are also upset because Ministry of State Security agents are well known to accept bribes from market traders. As levels of mistrust and anger increase, the situation is reportedly deteriorating.

Asked to describe the current atmosphere, a third Ryanggang-based source said, “Previously, when there was a crackdown coming, people would let each other know. This time, people are warning each other but also accusing each other. Making a living is difficult, and the authorities do nothing but launch investigations and confiscate money, so the people are lashing out.”

The residents are also upset about the regime’s propaganda and the fact that punishments are not being meted out evenly.

“It’s said that all the money and property seized during the investigations is being sent for construction projects in Samjiyon County, but nobody actually believes that. The Ministry of People’s Security conducted ideological evaluations of the residents after the investigation, but the residents are powerless to resist,” the initial source concluded.

North Korea proclaimed that it would launch a war of annihilation against anti-socialist behavior this year, and has strengthened its crackdown on the trade of South Korean cultural content and products that reflect capitalist culture.

THE NEWS: France's Macron in Nigeria to talk security, boost culture

POOL/AFP / Ludovic MARIN Macron arrived from the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott, where he conferred with Sahel leaders on security

French President Emmanuel Macron met with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja before taking off his jacket and tie in Lagos to celebrate African culture.

Macron's high-voltage visit to the Shrine -- Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti's music venue -- was part of his latest attempt to forge closer ties with English-speaking Africa.

"I'm very happy to be here with you tonight," said Macron, addressing the cheering and whistling crowd in English.

Macron's jet touched down in Abuja from Mauritania, where he attended the final day of an African Union summit dominated by security issues in the restive Sahel region.

He was met on the tarmac by Nigeria's foreign minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, before the presidential convoy left for Buhari's Aso Rock residence on the edge of the capital.

The 40-year-old former investment banker, who speaks fluent English, spent six months as an intern at the French embassy in the city in the early 2000s.

He told reporters travelling with him: "I like Nigeria a lot. It's an appealing country. I've got a lot of memories... that haven't left me."

Since coming to power he has made a point of boosting ties with France's former colonies but also improving trade with anglophone countries.

He visited Ghana last year and Nigeria -- Africa's economic powerhouse and the continent's leading oil producer -- was the next logical step.

Nigeria, a country home to over 180 million people, produces nearly two million barrels of crude oil per day and is a key economic partner for France.

- Security talks -

Macron said en route from Mauritania that "regional security and the fight against Boko Haram" would be high on the agenda in talks with Buhari, calling him a "key player".

Nine years of violence in the remote northeast has spread across the wider Lake Chad area. As a result, Macron said "the mobilisation of African states is fundamental".

Nigeria and its French-speaking neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger are involved in a joint military force to combat the jihadists, whose violence has killed at least 20,000 people.

Nigeria is also currently gripped by a resurgence of violence between nomadic cattle herders and farmers, which has claimed some 1,000 lives since January this year.

Amnesty International last week said some 1,813 people have been killed in all types of violence since the start of 2018 -- more than double that in the last 12 months alone.

That has put former military ruler Buhari, 75, under pressure as he looks towards securing a second term at elections in February next year.

In Nouakchott, Macron held talks with the leaders of the French-backed five-nation military force fighting Al-Qaeda-linked jihadists in the Sahel.

Niger and Chad, where France has a sizeable military presence, are part of the "G5 Sahel" group, which has faced a rise in attacks in recent days.

- Homage at the Shrine -

Late Tuesday, Macron touched down in Lagos and went directly to the Shrine, where he praised Nollywood -- Nigeria's massive film industry -- and the country's music.

Describing the concert hall as "iconic", Macron said that "we have to build a new common narrative" in Africa.

"You have to recognise the bad and negative pages of this history, but you have to move forward," he said to applause.

He launched the African Cultural Season which will take place in France in 2020, at an event showcasing music, fashion and theatre.

The choice of location surprised many Nigerians given its association with the anti-establishment musician.

No elected president is believed to have previously officially visited the spiritual home of the so-called "Black President", which is more synonymous with marijuana smoke and gyrating dancers than diplomatic niceties.

When asked about life as an intern in Nigeria, Macron was tight-lipped about his past.

"Obviously I will not share all those memories because what happens in the Shrine remains in the Shrine," Macron said to huge cheers and laughs.

On Wednesday, the president is set to inaugurate the new Alliance Francaise, a cultural centre, and is scheduled to meet young Nigerian entrepreneurs.

British police said Wednesday that two people are in a critical condition in a Salisbury hospital after being exposed to an "unknown substance" not far from where former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned.

Police said they considered the situation a "major incident."

The two patients "are both currently receiving treatment for suspected exposure to an unknown substance at Salisbury District Hospital," Wiltshire police said.

"They are both in a critical condition".

The two people, a man and a woman both in their 40s, were discovered unconscious on Saturday June 30 at a house in the village of Amesbury, which is around 12 kilometres (eight miles) from Salisbury.

Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found slumped on a bench in the city in southwestern England where the former double agent lived in March, sparking a bitter diplomatic crisis between Moscow and London, which says a Soviet-made nerve agent dubbed novichok was used on the pair.

Wiltshire police said they initially suspected that the two people had fallen ill after using "possibly heroin or crack cocaine from a contaminated batch of drugs."

"However, further testing is now ongoing to establish the substance which led to these patients becoming ill and we are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances surrounding this incident," they said.

Security cordons have been set up around the areas where the two people went before they fell ill, police said, and security has been boosted in both Amesbury and Salisbury.

A Public Health England (PHE) spokesman said "it is not believed that there is a significant health risk to the wider public."

"This will be continually assessed as further information becomes known," they said in a statement.

The hospital said it remained "open as usual" and advised people to attend routine appointments unless contacted to do otherwise.

Wiltshire's Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson said the police had worked hard at "containing any risk that might be there", the BBC reported.

Macpherson said there was "no reason to think it's connected" to the Skripal case.

Skripal, 67, and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia, who was visiting from Moscow, collapsed on March 4 in Salisbury. They were treated for an extended period of time before being released from Salisbury hospital.

A police officer who came to their aid, Nick Bailey, was also treated in hospital.

Russia has rejected British accusations of involvement in the Skripal poisoning, which sparked a diplomatic crisis that saw Russia and the West expelling dozens of diplomats in tit-for-tat moves.

THE NEWS: Cherry picking: China looks to replace US farm goods in trade war

Cherry picking: China looks to replace US farm goods in trade war

GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA/AFP/File / JUSTIN SULLIVAN Existing contracts for this year's harvest may make it hard for China to stop buying American cherries altogether

American cherries are tantalisingly sweet. They are so loaded with sugar and low on water that China's home-grown cherries cannot compete on taste or texture.

But this alone may not be enough, said Zhao Xiaoyu, a Beijing fruit merchant, who believes Chinese consumers will be biting into domestic cherries and lower quality fruit from elsewhere after July 6, when China is expected to impose a 25-percent border tax on hundreds of American goods.

Simmering trade tensions between the world's top two economies are set to erupt into a full-blown trade war Friday, with Washington poised to impose new tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods.

Beijing has pledged to hit back dollar for dollar, placing a new tax on American goods like cherries, soybeans, autos, pork and whiskey, putting them at a disadvantage to their global rivals.

Washington's list is heavy on tech goods, aiming in part to shift supply chains away from China, while Beijing has put politically sensitive US farm goods in the firing line.

"For simple products it's going to be faster to shift production, but for more complex products it's going to be difficult," said Denis Depoux, from consultancy Roland Berger, noting the quickest manufacturers will need at least a year and "won't make the changes until they know this is real and here to stay."

Farm products would appear simpler to substitute, Depoux noted, adding it would depend on the volumes available elsewhere and may require a planting season or two.

- 'A day without beans' -

The Chinese saying "Take a day without meat, but not a day without beans" speaks to the importance of soybeans in the world's number-two economy.

Providing critical protein in animal feed and used in cooking oil, 1.4 billion Chinese rely on imported soybeans, primarily from the US and Brazil.

Last year, China imported $14 billion of soybeans from the US, its largest imported good.

No other single country grows enough to satiate China's demand, soybean traders say, with annual imports of about 95 million tonnes -- about the weight of 60 million cars -- making it hard to move completely away from the US.

"As soon as the tariffs are slapped on, this will be reflected in the price of soybeans," said Cui, a soybean trader at Scents Holdings Beijing, which has bought tens of millions worth of the beans from the US, according to figures from Panjiva, a trade data firm.

"When it gets to regular people's dining room table, whether it's meat or cooking oil, there will be a price effect," Cui said, asking for his full name not to be used.

To lessen the self-inflicted shock, Beijing is searching for replacements.

"There are prospects for more soybeans from South America, the so-called 'Stan' countries in central Asia and even Eastern Europe," said Si Wei, a professor at China Agricultural University.

"How much we can replace, this still needs to be looked into," he said, adding China may also substitute rapeseed from Australia and Canada to make animal feed.

At home, Beijing is ramping up production in northern provinces, providing subsidies to farmers and launching an advertising blitz, according to government edicts.

"Expanding soybean production is the chief political task," declared the agriculture commission in the city of Changchun.

- 'Rotting in warehouses' -

Sorghum, used in animal feed and liquor making, is another grain the US sends to China in bulk, moving 4.8 million tonnes last year, according to Chinese data.

In recent years, the cheap American grain beat out exports from Australia, which had been China's primary source in 2013, according to Panjiva. Experts expect Australian growers to benefit from the trade fight.

Trade tensions earlier this year gave a foretaste of what may be to come: when China slapped a new customs deposit on the US grain, several ships carrying sorghum bound for China changed course en-route.

AFP/File / Gal ROMA The looming trade war also has US traders and growers worried

The looming trade war also has US traders and growers worried. US Senator Ron Wyden blasted commerce secretary Wilbur Ross last month, noting growers with 1.5 million boxes of cherries ready for China came to him in a panic.

"They're worried those cherries are going to end up stuck at the dock or rotting in a warehouse due to China's retaliation," Wyden said.

Zhao the Beijing cherry importer said existing contracts for this year's cherry harvest would make it hard to stop buying American cherries altogether.

"If we lose some money on contracts this year, there's nothing we can do about it," said Zhao.

"If it's still going on next year, we'll go straight to Turkey and Uzbekistan."
