THE NEWS: Brilliant Brooks roars into Northern Trust lead

GETTY/AFP / Gregory Shamus Brooks Koepka recorded a six-under-par 65 to join countryman Jamie Lovemark (66) atop the leaderboard at 10 under par at the Northern Trust

Brooks Koepka brilliantly ignited his quest for back-to-back victories after reeling off a trio of birdies on his closing three holes to storm into a share of the second round lead at the Northern Trust in New Jersey on Friday.

The newly minuted PGA Championship winner recorded a six-under-par 65 to join countryman Jamie Lovemark (66) atop the leaderboard at 10 under par.

Meanwhile Lovemark boosted his hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory thanks to five birdies in a six-hole stretch in the middle of his round on the Ridgewood Country Club course.

"The goal at the start of the week is to lead and to win it," said Lovemark. "I'm in great shape. Going to take tomorrow one step at a time and go from there."

Koepka started the day at four under par and was still at four under standing on the 12th.

But he launched his charge after landing a 63-foot greenside bunker shot to just three feet for birdie.

The triple Major-winner then drew roars with a 322-yard drive on the par-five 13th. He then ripped a 311-yard 3-wood to 23 feet before holing-out for an eagle.

"When I hit that 3-wood, it all clicked," Koepka said.

GETTY/AFP / Andrew Redington Jamie Lovemark boosted his hopes of a maiden PGA Tour victory thanks to five birdies in a six-hole stretch in the middle of his round at the Northern Trust

"I felt like I was finally able to release the golf club. I just tried to hit it as hard as I could, big draw. I aimed at the tree on the right and tried to draw it back to the flag. When I did that, everything started to click, other than the fat wedge shot on the next hole."

Koepka's closing three birdies were from lengths of 11-foot, 10-feet and six-feet.

Australia's Adam Scott, bizarrely carrying two putters in his bag with one a standard-size putter and other a long-handled version, recorded the lowest round of the week in signing for a seven-under-par 64 to be in third place at nine under.

Scott has been practicing with the short putter since the recent WGC – Bridgestone Invitational, and while there is nothing in the Rules of Golf to say he cannot have two putters in his bag, he revealed he's only used it twice in now 14 rounds.

"The presence of the small putter in my bag has clearly scared the longer one into action," Scott joked after recording just 26 putts.

GETTY/AFP / Gregory Shamus Tiger Woods faced a near hour anxious wait before confirmation his scores of a pair of 71s was good enough to make the cut at the Northern Trust

World and leading FedEx Cup No. 1 Dustin Johnson regrouped after starting his second round with a triple-bogey and then played his remaining 17 holes in four under, to be sharing fourth place on eight under with Bryson DeChambeau (66).

England's Tommy Fleetwood (68) is well-placed inng sixth spot at seven under par.

Tiger Woods faced a near hour anxious wait before confirmation his scores of a pair of 71s was good enough to make the cut right on the level par mark.

American J.T. Poston had a bittersweet day, however, making a hole-in-one at the fifth but missing the cut after shooting 75.

Also missing the cut was the European Ryder Cup confirmed foursome of Open Champion, Francesco Molinari (72, 72), Sweden's Alex Noren (72, 72), England's Justin Rose (72, 74), and Spaniard Jon Rahm (75, 73).

THE NEWS: NAFTA talks with US 'very far' along: Mexico's Guajardo

NAFTA talks with US 'very far' along: Mexico's Guajardo
source: AFP

AFP / Alina DIESTE Mexico's Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo (R) and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer have been meeting for five weeks on revising NAFTA

US and Mexican negotiators will continue meeting through the weekend to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement and Canada is set to rejoin the talks as soon as they are called, Mexico's Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said Friday.

Guajardo and Mexico's Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray have been shuttling back and forth to Washington for more than a month for meetings with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to try to iron out bilateral issues, such as rules for the auto market, before the end of August.

But Guajardo told reporters that Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland was ready at any point to proceed with the NAFTA negotiations.

"I have confirmation that she would be available the moment we believe we can enter into the trilateral" discussions, he said.

Freeland said earlier in the week that she was encouraged by the progress between Washington and Mexico City and would rejoin the talks once the bilateral discussions concluded.

However, her office announced Friday she would travel to Europe August 26-30 for visits in Germany, France and Ukraine.

The Mexican official declined to go into detail on the topics remaining with the United States but said the agreement could happen at any time.

"The idea is that we are staying because we know there are issues to resolve," he said. "And we have to make sure that everybody feels comfortable with this agreement."

Earlier Friday, Guajardo said officials were "very far" along in efforts to deal with the US-Mexico issues but added "there are trilateral issues that have to be solved in a trilateral context."

A contentious proposal by the United States -- which would require the nearly 25-year-old trade pact be reauthorized every five years -- is one that must include all three partners, Guajardo said.

Jesus Seade, an economic advisor to Mexico's incoming president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has been participating in portions of the NAFTA talks and said the sunset clause "is going out," according to press reports from Mexico City.

Guajardo declined to comment on Seade's remarks but said the teams were working together on behalf of Mexico.

A senior Canadian official told AFP on Thursday there had been "no indication of flexibility from the US on this issue."

The three countries have been negotiating for a year to salvage the trade pact that President Donald Trump says has been a "disaster" for the United States.

THE NEWS: Airbnb sues New York over 'government overreach'

Airbnb sues New York over 'government overreach'
source: AFP

AFP/File / Lionel BONAVENTURE

Airbnb sued the city of New York on Friday, denouncing as "an extraordinary act of government overreach" a new law forcing home-sharing platforms to disclose data about hosts.

It was a dramatic escalation in the battle between the $30 billion company and authorities in America's most populous city, amid a global backlash against "sharing economy" startups disrupting traditional industries.

The rental site filed the lawsuit in a federal court in Manhattan, asking for the law to be scrapped and branding it a product of a "multimillion-dollar campaign funded by the city's powerful hotel lobby."

The law, which comes into effect on February 2, 2019, requires home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb to disclose information about hosts and imposes hefty fines for non-compliance.

The 29-page suit called the ordinance "illegal" and argues that it "breaches critical privacy protections" for both home-sharing platforms and New Yorkers.

"No probable cause, notice, or legal review is contemplated in connection with the bulk collection of this data, and no real restrictions are placed on its use or dissemination," the suit argued.

City Hall hit back hard Friday.

"This law provides the city with the critical data it needs to preserve our housing stock, keep visitors safe, and ensure residents feel secure," said Christian Klossner, executive director of the mayor's office of special enforcement. "This city will defend it."

Supporters say the legislation will clamp down on illegal short-term rentals, which they argue drive up rents and make housing even less affordable.

Airbnb contends that most users in the city are hard-pushed New Yorkers trying to make ends meet by renting out rooms in their homes. New York is the company's biggest US market.

The state of New York already tightened the rules in 2016, slapping steep fines on those who let out unoccupied apartments for fewer than 30 days -- which is against the law unless the owner or lessor is present.

According to the lawsuit, "entire home" Airbnb listings make up only around 0.8 percent of homes in the city of 8.5 million people.

THE NEWS: Top-ranked Halep brimming with confidence heading into US Open

Top-ranked Halep brimming with confidence heading into US Open
source: AFP

AFP/File / Oli SCARFF No pressure: Simona Halep

Simona Halep, her number one ranking secure and a Grand Slam title on her resume, is riding high heading into the US Open but that doesn't mean she's taking anything for granted.

"I don't feel the pressure," said the 26-year-old Romanian, whose intensity on the court hasn't always worked to her advantage.

A victory in the French Open -- after disappointments in three Grand Slam finals -- confirmed for Halep that she had truly arrived at the top.

"Inside myself something changed," she said. "I'm more relaxed. These two were my dreams -- to be number one in the world and to win a Grand Slam. Always I say number one in the world without a Grand Slam, you are not a real number one.

"After the French Open, I really started to believe that I'm a real number one."

That ranking isn't in jeopardy at the final Grand Slam of the year, but Halep is under no illusion as to how difficult it will be to claim a second major.

"I can say I have a big chance for this tournament, but it's tough to say that I'm the favorite even if I'm No. 1," she said. "Everyone is playing at maybe the highest level. Every match, every round is difficult.

"I'm just looking forward to playing my first one. If I win it, I will focus on the next one, just like that."

It's a tried and true approach, and a perhaps a wise one for a player who could come up against 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the fourth round.

If she makes it, the semi-finals could produce a third clash of 2018 with defending US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

The two have proved compelling rivals, with Halep getting the better of the American in the Roland Garros final and again in a rollercoaster final in Montreal two weeks ago.

But Stephens is reluctant to call it a "rivalry," glumly noting Friday that "it's not a rivalry if you don't beat the person".

"Eventually, I'm going to get her," Stephens insisted. "Hopefully, it will be soon."

- Tough draw -

Halep isn't worrying just yet whether that will be at Flushing Meadows. She was looking no further than first-round foe Kaia Kanepi -- a quarter-finalist last year.

"It's a very tough draw for sure," Halep said. "Last year I lost in the first round, so it cannot be worse than that. I feel confident. I feel that I have the game to win against her, but she's very dangerous."

Halep followed her victory in Montreal with a run to the final in Cincinnati -- where she was clearly fading as she fell to Dutch outsider Kiki Bertens.

Although she cited a sore right Achilles in withdrawing from New Haven, Halep said the week off had put things right.

"I had a tough few days after the Cincinnati final, but now I've recovered, I feel strong again.

That means that, as always, Halep is primed for a fight.

"The gentleman, when he's announcing the players, it's very special and very nice," she said of hearing herself introduced as the world number one and French Open champion.

"But when you start the match you forget that you are number one, you have all the titles. You just have the battle ahead in front of you. You have just to fight for it, so I'm doing that."

THE NEWS: Uncertainties surround Murray in Grand Slam return

Uncertainties surround Murray in Grand Slam return
source: AFP

AFP / TIMOTHY A. CLARY In demand: Andy Murray talks to the press during the US Open media day on Friday

Andy Murray admits his return to the US Open brings mixed emotions as he wonders how his surgically repaired hip will hold up to the rigors of his first Grand Slam in over a year.

"It feels slightly different, this one, because for the last 10 years or so I've been coming and trying to prepare to win the event, whereas I don't feel like that's realistic for me this year," Murray said as he met reporters on the new Armstrong Stadium court on Friday.

"It's a slightly different mentality for me coming in than what I have had the last 10, 11 years of my life. That feels a bit odd."

Murray, who won the first of his three Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows in 2012, arrives this year ranked 378th in the world and still working his way back from hip surgery in January.

In all he was off the court for 11 months. The 31-year-old hasn't played a Grand Slam since losing in the Wimbledon quarter-finals last year.

He acknowledged that he won't know how his body responds to best-of-five set matches until he's called upon to play them.

"You don't know until you actually get out there and do it," the 31-year-old said. "That's the thing. I played some long matches in Washington. They were all over two-and-a-half hours, and a three-hour match. Three of them in four days. The benefit of the Slams is having that day off to recover in between, which will help me."

- Body feels better -

Murray also dodged a bullet in the draw. Unseeded at a major for the first time since Wimbledon in 2006, he could have faced a first-round clash with any of the top seeds but instead will take on 445th-ranked Australian James Duckworth -- who has endured a litany of injuries himself.

Murray, who pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of the Championships saying he wasn't yet ready for best-of-five set matches, has played hardcourt tournaments in Washington and Cincinnati in preparation for the final Grand Slam of the season.

Prior to a first-round exit in Cincinnati he posted three gritty victories in the weather-disrupted Washington event.

Moments after his 3 am finish won in a three-hour third-rounder there, Murray was collapsed in a chair, sobbing, a reaction he admitted took him by surprise.

"I was physically tired. My body was sore. I hadn't been in that sort of match or position for a really long time. It was a combination of lots of things. It's strange that during the match, I wouldn't have anticipated that that's how I would have felt at the end of it. But obviously was just really emotional for lots and lots of different reasons."

The next day a weary Murray withdrew from the tournament. Although he didn't make much headway with his match fitness in Cincinnati Murray said his return to New York was already yielding benefits.

"It's been good," he said of the chance to practice with the game's best players. "My body feels better than it did a few weeks ago, so that's positive.

"Just being around these players and practicing with them more and more on a more consistent basis is going to help me improve."

THE NEWS: Veteran US senator McCain halts cancer treatment

AFP/File / BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI US Senator John McCain -- seen here in January 2015 -- was diagnosed with brain cancer last year and will no longer seek treatment

Veteran US senator and war hero John McCain -- a towering figure in American politics for decades -- has stopped treatment for brain cancer, his family announced Friday, one year after the Republican went public with his diagnosis.

The announcement signals the beginning of the end of a tough battle with an aggressive form of cancer -- and of a storied life that took the Naval Academy graduate from a Hanoi prison to the doorstep of the White House.

"The progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the 81-year-old senator's loved ones said in a statement.

"With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."

McCain has spent more than three decades in the upper chamber of Congress, looming large in debates over war and peace and the moral direction of the nation.

The Navy fighter pilot spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam after being shot down while on a bombing mission over Hanoi.

He lost the 2008 presidential election to Barack Obama, and was pilloried for selecting controversial Alaska politician Sarah Palin as his vice presidential runningmate.

"No man this century better exemplifies honor, patriotism, service, sacrifice and country first than Senator John McCain," said fellow Republican Mitt Romney.

"His heroism inspires, his life shapes our character. I am blessed and humbled by our friendship."

- Trump critic -

With no more elections to run, since 2016, he has been a rare and outspoken Republican critic of President Donald Trump.

Known for his combustible temper, he has accused the 45th president of "naivete," "egotism" and of sympathizing with autocrats.

Following Trump's recent summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, McCain caustically described the US leader's behavior as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."

That has earned him the ire of Trump, who regularly blames McCain for his failure to reform Obama-era health care laws and refused to say his name when signing the eponymous "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act."

- 'Strength to carry on' -

McCain has not been on the Senate floor in months, remaining at his Arizona home for treatment of glioblastoma -- the same form of brain cancer that took the life of another Senate giant, Democrat Ted Kennedy, in 2009.

"I love my husband with all of my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey," his wife Cindy said.

His daughter Meghan thanked the public for an outpouring of support.

"My family is deeply appreciative of all the love and generosity you have shown us during this past year," she tweeted.

"Thank you for all your continued support and prayers. We could not have made it this far without you - you've given us strength to carry on."

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he was "very sad to hear this morning's update from the family of our dear friend."

"John, Cindy and the entire McCain family are in our prayers at this incredibly difficult hour."

Democrats, too, weighed in.

"Senator John McCain is a warrior in every sense of the word," said Congressman Joe Kennedy III -- a scion of the American political dynasty.

"To an inspiring man and a loving family, our thoughts are with you."

- 'Untreatable levels' -

John Boockvar, director of the Brain Tumor Center at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, said the type of cancer is "incurable."

"He is probably at the terminal part of his disease," Boockvar, who has not treated McCain but is an expert in the field, told AFP.

"They have decided not to extend any other options to him for treatment because at some point, the risks outweigh the benefits."

Treatment usually consists of chemotherapies, with a low chance of success.

Boockvar said the cancer had likely "spread to untreatable levels and he is seeking comfort care, which is a very reasonable point of his battle against this disease."

In an interview with CNN last year, when asked how he might like to be remembered, McCain said of himself: "He served his country and not always right. Made a lot of mistakes. Made a lot of errors, but served his country. And I hope we could add honorably."

AFP/File / Robyn Beck Elon Musk wrote in the company blog he had met with Tesla's board of directors to let them know "the better path is for Tesla to remain public"

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Friday that the company would continue to be publicly traded, weeks after suggesting that he would take the electric carmaker private.

Musk met with Tesla's board of directors on Thursday "and let them know that I believe the better path is for Tesla to remain public. The Board indicated that they agree," he wrote on the company blog.

Musk surprised markets on August 7 by announcing on Twitter he wanted to take Tesla private at $420 a share. But shares fell more than 20 percent since the announcement.

After the announcement the controversial entrepreneur came under extensive scrutiny over his Twitter statements related to the proposal, especially a claim that Tesla had "secured" funding for the move.

However, Musk said Friday that based on talks with current shareholders, as well as an assessment by financial advisers Silver Lake, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, "it's apparent that most of Tesla's existing shareholders believe we are better off as a public company."

Even though the majority of shareholders "said they would remain with Tesla if we went private, the sentiment, in a nutshell, was 'please don't do this,'" he wrote.

"I knew the process of going private would be challenging, but it's clear that it would be even more time-consuming and distracting than initially anticipated."

THE NEWS: Washington criticizes European aid package for Iran

AFP / Behrouz MEHRI US special representative for Iran Brian Hook said the EU aid package would allow Tehran to "neglect the needs of its people"

A European Union aid plan for Iran sends "the wrong message at the wrong time" to the government in Tehran, the US State Department said Friday.

The $20.7 million EU assistance package "perpetuates the regime's ability to neglect the needs of its people and stifles meaningful policy changes," read a statement Friday signed by US special representative for Iran Brian Hook.

"More money in the hands of the Ayatollah means more money to conduct assassinations in those very European countries."

According to Hook, the Iranian people "face very real economic pressures caused by their government's corruption, mismanagement, and deep investment in terrorism and foreign conflicts."

He said that the United States and the European Union "should be working together... to find lasting solutions that truly support Iran's people and end the regime's threats to regional and global stability."

The package of assistance offered to Iran, announced on Thursday, is "for projects in support of sustainable economic and social development" in the Islamic Republic, and includes funds to help develop the private sector, according to a statement from the European Commission.

The funds "are the first of a wider package of 50 million euros for Iran, aiming to support the country to address key economic and social challenges," the statement read.

"They are part of the renewed cooperation and engagement between the European Union and Iran following the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)."

After withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and the major powers, Washington in early August reinstated sanctions against Tehran and issued a warning to countries that continued trading with Iran.

GETTY/AFP / Vaughn Ridley Amy Yang rolled in nine birdies to reach 13-under 131, giving the South Korean a slim lead at the Canadian Women's Open

Amy Yang, who is looking for her first win in 18 months, fired a seven-under 65 to seize a one-stroke lead at the halfway stage of the Canadian Women's Open on Friday.

Yang rolled in nine birdies to reach 13-under 131, giving the South Korean a slim lead over Angel Yin and Canadian Brooke Henderson at the Wascana Country Club course in Regina, Saskatchewan.

"My putting was really good today. I was hitting it pretty solid out there, but I gave myself a lot of good chances, and I think I made most of them out there," said Yang, who needed just 26 putts.

Yang has four top-five finishes in 2018.

Henderson, 20, is the crowd favorite and is having one of her best starts ever at the national championships. She fired her second straight 66 after beginning her round on a high note by chipping in for birdie.

Yin got to watch Yang up close on Friday. They played together and took advantage of morning tee off times before the winds picked up.

Yin, of the US, followed her seven-under-par 65 Thursday with a five-under-par 67 Friday to sit at 12-under with Henderson. Yin is looking for her first-ever LPGA Tour title.

Defending champion Park Sung-hyun is tied for fourth with three others after shooting an eight-under 64.

Park made seven birdies and an eagle in what developed into her second lowest round of the season.

"Today everything felt really good from tee to putting," said Park. "Even though my putting wasn't great yesterday, it was better than I anticipated. I'm pretty satisfied with my round."

Saskatchewan-native Bobbi Brandon finished in last place after shooting a 18-over 90 on Friday. But she said just competing this week was a win for her.

This was just Brandon's second appearance in the national championship following her debut two decades ago when she also missed the cut.

The 40-year-old Brandon, who finished with a 29-over 173 total, was given an exemption to get into the tournament.

"When I was 20 I was very nervous and shy," Brandon told the Regina Leader-Post newspaper. "It's different to kind of just enjoy it and not be a little frightened by the surroundings."

THE NEWS: Residents on edge as Lane lashes Hawaii

AFP / Ronen ZILBERMAN Surfers ride southshore swells generated by Lane on Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Torrential rain pounded Hawaii on Friday as Hurricane Lane, now downgraded to a tropical storm, crawled toward the island state, triggering landslides and "catastrophic" flooding, and forcing thousands to seek emergency shelter.

Lane, which was reclassified as a Tropical Storm at 0300 GMT Saturday, was located around 120 miles (190 kilometers) south of the capital Honolulu, slowly moving in a north-northeastward direction at just three miles per hour.

Lane "weakens to a Tropical Storm south of Oahu, but rain bands will still bring more flooding and damaging winds to parts of the main Hawaiian islands," the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.

Lane, which packed still dangerous winds of 70 miles per hour, is forecast on Saturday to turn westward and away from the Pacific islands.

"Regardless of the hurricane track, life-threatening impacts will extend far beyond the center position as Lane approaches the islands," the National Weather Center said.

"Excessive rainfall associated with this slow moving hurricane will continue to impact the Hawaiian Islands into the weekend, leading to catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and landslides."

Brad Kieserman with the American Red Cross told reporters more than 2,000 people were sheltering in 45 evacuation centers.

"I would not be surprised to wake up tomorrow morning and see evacuation center populations at or above 2,500 or 3,000," he added.

- 'Whiteout' conditions -

Almost 25 inches (60 centimeters) of rain fell on the iconic Waikiki Beach in the last 36 hours, forcing its closure as hoteliers and store owners piled sandbags outside their businesses.

The mainly-rural Big Island -- home to the still-erupting Kilauea Volcano -- has taken the worst hit so far, with more than 30 inches of rain in about 24 hours.

Experts warned of "whiteout conditions" -- steam loaded with particles and toxic gases produced when cool moisture hits lava -- as the storm passes.

Lane however should have little effect on the eruption "aside from minor rockfalls at the summit and increased steaming" from two vents, the US Geological Survey said.

However "whiteout conditions could occur... due to steam produced by heavy rain falling on still-hot lava flows."

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long warned of major power grid disruptions.

"We need to set the expectation that the power could go off for quite some time and the infrastructure is going to be heavily impacted," Long said.

Residents across the state have been stocking up on water, food, gasoline and emergency supplies as Lane drew nearer.

- 'Destructive waves' -

Sea levels were expected to rise as much as two to four feet (60 to 122 centimeters) above normal tide levels, causing coastal erosion and prompting a storm surge and "large and destructive waves," forecasters said.

United, Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines have canceled some or all international and domestic flights.

The US Coast Guard says 57,000 US military personnel stationed in Hawaii are ready to offer medical support and conduct search and rescue operations.

"I've not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I've seen with this storm," Governor David Ige said in a statement as he declared a state of emergency earlier this week on the Big Island.

President Donald Trump called Ige, the White House said, to offer support and discuss preparedness and emergency measures.

The last major storm to strike Hawaii was nearly three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki hit the island of Kauai, leaving six dead and causing billions of dollars in damage.

Federal officials have been working with Hawaiian utility managers to monitor the power grid, a major vulnerability in Puerto Rico last year when it was hit by Hurricane Maria, a powerful Category Four hurricane.

Hurricane-related deaths in Puerto Rico have been estimated at as many as 4,600 people, largely because prolonged and widespread power outages and washed out roads prevented access to health care, US researchers said.

THE NEWS: Pope Francis arrives in Ireland

AFP / Vincenzo PINTO Pope Francis departed from Fiumicino airport in Italy on Saturday morning

Pope Francis touched down in Dublin on Saturday for an historic two-day visit to Ireland, where the Catholic Church is battling to regain trust following multiple scandals.

His Alitalia "Shepherd One" flight landed under cloudless skies at 10:26am (0926 GMT), where deputy head of government Simon Coveney and his children were waiting to meet him with a bouquet of white and yellow roses with Irish foliage.

Hundreds of thousands of wellwishers and over a 1,000 journalists are expected to follow Francis during his tour of Dublin and County Mayo in the far west of the country.

Francis will tour Dublin on Saturday on his Popemobile before visiting a hostel for homeless families and giving a speech at Croke Park stadium.

The highlight of the visit will be an outdoor mass in the city's Phoenix Park on Sunday, expected to draw 500,000 people -- a tenth of the country's entire population.

It is the first papal visit to Ireland since Pope John Paul II spoke to a crowd of 1.5 million people there in 1979.

The country has since undergone fundamental social change, becoming more secular -- electing a gay prime minister and voting to legalise same-sex marriage and abortion.

The church has also been tarnished by clerical abuse scandals and victims and their supporters will hold a "Stand for Truth" demonstration in Dublin during the Sunday mass.

The Vatican confirmed Francis will meet with victims but provided no details, and said

It also said he was unlikely to announce specific measures to combat sexual abuse within the church following a devastating recent US report that accused more than 300 priests in the state of Pennsylvania of abusing more than 1,000 children since the 1950s.

In Tuam, a town in western Ireland, a silent vigil was planned in solidarity with victims of "mother and baby" homes -- institutions accused of being punishment hostels for unwed pregnant women.

He will meet with President Michael D Higgins and Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar.

THE NEWS: Rohingya protest for 'justice' on crackdown anniversary

AFP/File / Dibyangshu SARKAR Rohingya refugees staged angry protests for justice on the first anniversary of a Myanmar military crackdown that sparked a mass exodus to camps in Bangladesh

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees staged angry protests for "justice" Saturday on the first anniversary of a Myanmar military crackdown that sparked a mass exodus to camps in Bangladesh.

Many wept as they recalled the brutal killings and rapes inflicted on the Muslim minority last year as 700,000 fled across the border.

The biggest refugee camp in the world is rigidly controlled by Bangladesh authorities and the peaceful but charged Rohingya marches and rallies seen there were unprecedented.

A local police chief, Abul Khair, told AFP an estimated 40,000 refugees attended marches and rallies across the camps.

"We are Rohingya, we want justice," people chanted in the Kutupalong camp, where a giant banner proclaimed: "Never Again: Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day. 25 August, 2018."

In a different part of the camp, thousands of women and children marched behind a huge poster declaring: "365 days of crying. Now I am angry."

Rohingya militants staged attacks on Myanmar police posts on August 25 last year, sparking a bloody crackdown in Rakhine state.

AFP/File / Dibyangshu SARKAR Police said an estimated 40,000 refugees attended marches and rallies

Nearly 7,000 Rohingya were killed in the first month, according to Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).

Refugees arrived in Bangladesh on foot or in flimsy boats. Many brought horrific stories of sexual violence, torture and villages burned to the ground.

- 'Black day' -

Columns of people marching through the camp on Saturday waved banners and chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great).

Tears flowed as one imam gave a sermon, saying "Please Allah, return to us our homeland. Let us see our parents' graves. We left them back in Myanmar."

Mohammad Ayub, a 28-year-old refugee who joined a march, said many Rohingya had lost loved ones in the violence and still mourned for them.

"We remember them on this day. It is a black day," he told AFP.

Myanmar authorities, who insist their forces only targeted insurgents, have made an agreement with Bangladesh to repatriate refugees but only a handful have gone back.

Rohingya leaders say the exiles will not return home unless their safety is guaranteed.

Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi this week said it was up to Bangladesh "to decide how quickly" repatriation of the refugees can be accomplished.

She said the "terrorist threat" posed by Rohingya militants remains "real and present".

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, which has been blamed for attacks in Myanmar, issued an anniversary statement in which it condemned Myanmar's "terrorist government and genocidal military".

Mohammad Hossain, a 40-year-old protester at Kutupalong, said: "We are here remember to August 25. We want justice.

"We want them (Myanmar) to recognise us as Rohingya. We are very sad because we are not in our native land."

- No home, no hope -

The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago by Myanmar and have been chased from the country in successive convulsions of violence.

About 300,000 were already in the camps in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district and the latest arrivals pushed numbers to one million.

AFP/File / Dibyangshu SARKAR The Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship decades ago by Myanmar

The Rohingya and aid agencies are most worried about the uncertain future of the refugees, who are stateless and seemingly unwanted in Bangladesh while conditions in their Rakhine homeland remain dangerous.

International Red Cross Committee president Peter Maurer, who visited the camps and Rakhine in July, said in an anniversary statement that Rohingya in both places were "living in misery".

"Unfortunately, since my visit we have not seen tangible improvements for those displaced or the few who remain in Rakhine."

The Red Cross chief called for urgent "sustainable solutions" for "safe, dignified and voluntary returns as soon as possible."

He said this must include "political steps" in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

While the Rohingya exodus from western Myanmar continues, with refugees still trickling over the border, the United Nations and international rights groups say conditions are not ready for their return.

"It may be decades until they can safely return to Myanmar, if ever," said MSF head of mission in Bangladesh Pavlo Kolovos in a statement.

AFP/File / Nick Perry Aid agencies fear it will be years before the Rohingya are allowed to return to Rakhine state

Calls have mounted for Myanmar's military to be held responsible for the campaign and the United States has sanctioned two army brigades and several commanders who oversaw the expulsion.

There have also been calls for an International Criminal Court inquiry but Myanmar has bristled at international criticism.

Humanitarian agencies spearheading the relief effort in Bangladesh say just one-third of the roughly $1 billion needed for the refugees until March has been raised.

THE NEWS: Thousands of Venezuelans reach Peru as border restrictions tighten

Thousands of Venezuelans reach Peru as border restrictions tighten

AFP / CRIS BOURONCLE Thousands of Venezuelans fleeing their country's spiraling economic and political crisis have rushed towards the Peruvian border

Peru on Saturday closed its borders to Venezuelan migrants without a passport, as thousands holding only identification cards reached the border in a last minute crush, some beating the deadline with special assistance from Ecuador.

Thousands of Venezuelans fleeing their country's spiraling economic and political crisis rushed towards the Peruvian border after last week's announcement from Lima that they had one week to enter before a passport would be required.

The flood of Venezuelans at Peru's northern border crossing at Tumbes was so overwhelming that the station -- normally open 24 hours a day -- closed at midnight Friday (0500 GMT Saturday) when the new rules came into effect.

The lucky ones already in line were handed tickets and told they could still enter without a passport when the border crossing reopens at sunrise. Border agents took no questions from reporters.

- "Humanitarian corridor" -

Ecuador opened a "humanitarian corridor" on Friday and lifted its own entry restrictions to facilitate the Venezuelans' travels to Peru.

Interior Minister Mauro Toscanini said that 35 busloads of migrants were on the move along the route authorities had opened to Peru.

"We got here because the Ecuadorans brought us aboard five buses under escort," a grateful Virginia Velasquez, 36, told AFP. She managed to slip into Peru just minutes before midnight.

"Thank god I'm in Peru," added 15 year-old Felipe Fernandez, who arrived with his parents and a brother.

Peru is one of the region's fastest growing economies with 4.7 percent growth projected for next year.

But anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise, and stricter requirements for Venezuelans has popular support. There are already an estimated 400,000 Venezuelans in Peru.

AFP / CRIS BOURONCLE Migrants in Tumbes were handed tickets if they were already in the line

"We're sorry for the Venezuelan people, but they are taking a job away from a Peruvian," said Giannella Jaramillo, who runs a clothes stall in Aguas Verdes, a town bordering with Ecuador.

"It's hard to help more people."

More than 2,500 migrants swamped the small Aguas Verdes crossing on Friday -- 10 times the usual daily traffic.

Given the new Peruvian restrictions some Venezuelans decided to stay in Ecuador -- including Lourdes Ruiz, 36, who had been traveling for one month by land destination Lima.

Anyway, "we don't have anyone to receive us" in Peru, Ruiz told AFP on the Ecuadoran side of the border.

- 'Tired and dizzy' -

AFP / CRIS BOURONCLE The UN said up to 4,000 people were arriving daily in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil

Several groups have set up aid stations in the six kilometer gap between the Ecuadoran and Peruvian border crossings.

Some of the Venezuelans walked 2,000 kilometers and more carrying young children and their luggage in tow. The lucky ones arrived on buses and trucks.

On the Ecuadoran side three large tents with 25 mattresses each were set up for Venezuelans.

"The children are tired and dizzy because the trip has been quite complicated," Carolina Velandria, a 36-year-old supermarket manager told AFP after crossing into Peru.

Peru's education ministry set up a special tent to entertain the youngest children during their long wait.

Crossing the border into Peru however is just the first step.

Reaching the nearest city, Tumbes, costs $10 by taxi, the only authorized public transport. And it's $35 more for a 20 hour bus trip to the capital Lima, 1,200 kilometers to the south.

Colombia has pleaded with its southern neighbors to agree to a combined migration strategy, while Ecuador has called a meeting of 13 Latin American countries next month to discuss the crisis.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will set up a special UN team to ensure a coordinated regional response, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

Of the 2.3 million Venezuelans living abroad, more than 1.6 million have fled the country since the crisis began in 2015, according to UN figures.

The pace of departures has accelerated in recent days.

"It remains critical that any new measures continue to allow those in need of international protection to access safety and seek asylum," UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said on Thursday.

The UN said up to 4,000 people were arriving daily in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil, where migrants have been violently turned back by locals concerned with increasing crime.

Colombia says it has already given temporary residence to 870,000 Venezuelans but it can barely cope. It's the same for Peru, where earlier this month, a record 5,100 people entered the country in a single day.

Venezuela is in a fourth straight year of recession, with double-digit declines in its gross domestic product. The inflation rate is expected to reach one million percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

AFP / Alberto PIZZOLI Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at Juventus has pushed the club's stock market valuation over the billion-euro mark

Cristiano Ronaldo plays his first competitive game in Turin on Saturday as it was revealed that his arrival at Juventus has pushed the Serie A champions over the billion-euro mark on the Italian stock exchange.

According to Calcio e Finanza, a specialist sport and finance website, at the close of business on Friday, Juventus were valued at 1.035 billion euros ($1.2 billion).

It is the first time the club has reached that level since its introduction on the stock exchange in 2001.

That compares to Manchester United, the world's richest club, whose overall value is £3.1bn ($3.9 billion).

Juventus's shares have grown 55.15 percent on the stock exchange since July 1, increasing from 0.660 euro to 1.024 euros.

"The rise peaked this summer, starting in June, when the first information about the possible arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo began circulating," noted Calcio e Finanza.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner joined the Serie A champions from Real Madrid on July 10 in a 100-million-euro deal. He earns a salary of 30 million euros per year.

Since his arrival sales of the club's black and white jersey have also exploded.

Calcio e Finanza added that the volume of share sales went from 19 million euros in June to 301 million euros in July.

Ronaldo played his first competitive game in a 3-2 win against Chievo in Verona last weekend. His first game in Turin is against Lazio on Saturday at 1600 GMT.

"There's excitement in the air!" said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"Ronaldo is bringing a great enthusiasm to Italian football, I see all the people that are waiting outside, but regardless of the excitement, we still have to win games.

"We haven't won anything just by signing him, so we have to show that on the pitch.

"Lazio will make it a great encounter, they defeated us last season at Allianz Stadium to end a 41-game unbeaten run. So it's very important, even if it is only our second match of the season."

Simone Inzaghi's Roman side -- who finished fifth last season -- lost their opening match of the season 1-0 against Napoli.

"It would be wrong to only think about Ronaldo," said Inzaghi.

"They'll also play (Paulo) Dybala and (Mario) Mandzukic, and they have so many alternatives on the bench."

UN urges EU states to accept migrants stranded on Italy coastguard ship

AFP / Giovanni ISOLINO Migrants have been blocked at the Sicilian port of Catania on the Diciotti vessel since Monday night

The UN's Refugee Agency on Saturday called on EU member states to urgently agree to take in some of the 150 people stranded on an Italian coastguard ship, after a fresh immigration row erupted between the bloc and Italy's populist government.

Dozens of people have been blocked at the Sicilian port of Catania on the Diciotti vessel since Monday night because the Italian government is refusing to allow them to disembark without commitments from the EU to take some of them in.

Italy on Friday said it would pull its funding for the EU as a "compensatory measure" if the bloc refused to come forward and help with relocating the migrants.

The UNHCR on Saturday said EU member states should "urgently" offer places to some of the migrants on the vessel, adding: "In the meantime, UNHCR urges Italian authorities to allow the immediate disembarkation of those on board".

A high-level meeting of a dozen EU member states in Brussels on Friday, held to discuss what officials said was the broader issue of the disembarkation of migrants rescued at sea, failed to produce an immediate solution for the Diciotti migrants.

"The European Union has decided to turn its back on Italy once again," Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio wrote on his Facebook page, adding that his country had no choice but to "take a compensatory measure in a unilateral way... we are ready to reduce the funds that we give to the European Union".

"They want the 20 billion euros ($23 billion) paid by Italian citizens? Then let them demonstrate that they deserve it and that they are taking charge of a problem that we can no longer face alone. The borders of Italy are the borders of Europe," he added.

Migration is a hot-button issue in Italy, where hundreds of thousands of people have arrived since 2013 fleeing war, persecution and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Under EU rules people must seek asylum in their country of arrival, but Italy's new government has increasingly barred boats from docking at its ports.

- 'Unconstructive comments' -

Brussels quickly hit back at Di Maio's comments.

"Unconstructive comments, let alone threats, are not helpful and they will not get us any closer to a solution," European Commission spokesman Alexander Winterstein told a briefing.

"The EU is a community of rules and it operates on the basis of rules, not threats."

No deal was struck about the Diciotti migrants at the talks, as a source at the European Commission said "this was not a meeting where decisions were taken".

AFP/File / Andreas SOLARO Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio warned "We are ready to reduce the funds that we give to the European Union"

However, the source said they discussed "the need for a shared and rapid solution for the migrants on board of the Diciotti as well as those most recently disembarked in Spain and Malta."

EU figures for 2016 say Italy contributed just under 14 billion euros to the EU budget -- less than one percent of its gross national income -- while the bloc spent 11.6 billion euros in Italy.

Di Maio, who heads the anti-establishment Five Star, said Italy didn't want the "mickey taken out of us by the union's other countries" on the distribution of migrants.

"The EU was born of principles like solidarity. If it is not capable of redistributing 170 people it has serious problems with its founding principles," he said in an interview with state broadcaster RAI.

Prosecutors from Sicily were travelling to Rome to question officials, including Italy's hardline Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, about the illegal detention of those onboard.

"If a judge wants to arrest me, I expect it, no problem," Salvini said Friday.

- 'We've had enough' -

Salvini stopped the majority of the migrants disembarking from the ship after they were rescued on August 15.

His only concession was to allow 27 unaccompanied minors off the boat Wednesday.

Opinion polls suggest that Salvini's stance has boosted his far-right League party's approval rating to around 30 percent -- a more than 10 point jump from its showing in March's election -- and is now level with the Five Star Movement with which it has governed Italy since early June.

However, according to Salvini's own ministry, migrant arrivals are more than 80 percent down on the same period last year, with just over 19,500 arriving up to August 23, compared to 98,000 in 2017.

In France, meanwhile, the presidency called for a "co-ordinated, long-term European mechanism" to distribute migrants that would include Italy. "There are forces in Italy that are looking to co-operate, we want to believe Italy wishes to play the game," the Elysee palace said.
