'Norman,' when artificial intelligence goes psycho

'Norman,' when artificial intelligence goes psycho

AFP/File / KIRILL KUDRYAVTSEV Researchers at MIT have created 'Norman', the first psychopathic artificial intelligence to explain how algorithms are made, and to make people aware of AI's potential dangers

No, it's not a new horror film. It's Norman: also known as the first psychopathic artificial intelligence, just unveiled by US researchers.

The goal is to explain in layman's terms how algorithms are made, and to make people aware of AI's potential dangers.

Norman "represents a case study on the dangers of Artificial Intelligence gone wrong when biased data is used in machine learning algorithms," according to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Pinar Yanardag, Manuel Cebrian and Iyad Rahwan, part of an MIT team, added: "there is a central idea in machine learning: the data you use to teach a machine learning algorithm can significantly influence its behavior."

"So when we talk about AI algorithms being biased or unfair, the culprit is often not the algorithm itself, but the biased data that was fed to it," they said via email.

Hence the idea of creating Norman, which was named after the psychopathic killer Norman Bates in the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film "Psycho."

Norman was "fed" only with short legends describing images of "people dying" found on the Reddit internet platform.

The researchers then submitted images of ink blots, as in the Rorschach psychological test, to determine what Norman was seeing and compare his answers to those of traditionally trained AI.

The results are scary, to say the least: where traditional AI sees "two people standing close to each other," Norman sees in the same spot of ink "a man who jumps out a window."

And when Norman distinguishes "a man shot to death by his screaming wife," the other AI detects "a person holding an umbrella."

A dedicated website, norman-ai.mit.edu, shows 10 examples of ink blots accompanied by responses from both systems, always with a macabre response from Norman.

The site lets Internet users also test Norman with ink blots and send their answers "to help Norman repair itself."

THE NEWS: Saudi women rev up motorbikes as end to driving ban nears

Saudi women rev up motorbikes as end to driving ban nears
source: AFP

AFP / FAYEZ NURELDINE Saudi women have been gathering weekly at the Bikers Skills Institute, a sports circuit in Riyadh, to learn how to ride motorbikes

Even a year ago, it would have been hard to imagine -- Saudi women clad in skinny jeans and Harley-Davidson T-shirts, revving motorbikes at a Riyadh sports circuit.

But ahead of the historic lifting of a decades-long ban on female drivers on June 24, women gather weekly at the privately owned Bikers Skills Institute, to learn how to ride bikes.

"Biking has been a passion ever since I was a kid," said 31-year-old Noura, who declined to give her real name as she weighs public reactions in the ultra-conservative Islamic kingdom.

Overturning the world's only ban on female drivers, long a symbol of repression against women, is the most striking reform yet launched by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

But it has been overshadowed by a wave of arrests of female activists -- including veteran campaigners who long resisted the ban.

None of the women at the floodlit motoring circuit wanted to talk about the crackdown, a deeply sensitive issue, focusing instead on securing a basic freedom long denied to them.

"I grew up watching my family riding bikes," Noura told AFP as she mounted a Yamaha Virago.

"Now I hope... to have enough skills to ride on the street."

Next to her, revving a Suzuki, sat Leen Tinawi, a 19-year-old Saudi-born Jordanian.

AFP / FAYEZ NURELDINE Even a year ago it would have been hard to imagine Saudi women riding motorbikes in Riyadh but on June 24 the kingdom will historically lift the decades-long ban on female drivers

For both women, biking is not just an adrenalin-fuelled passion, but also a form of empowerment.

"I can summarise the whole experience of riding a bike in one word -- freedom," Tinawi said.

- 'It's your turn to ride' -

Both bikers follow their Ukrainian instructor, 39-year-old Elena Bukaryeva, who rides a Harley-Davidson.

Most days the circuit is the domain of drag racers and bike enthusiasts -- all men.

But since offering courses to women in February on the basics of bike riding, four female enthusiasts have enrolled, most of them Saudis, Bukaryeva said.

AFP / FAYEZ NURELDINE Courses on basic motorbike riding for women began in Riyadh in February and four signed up

"They always wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle. And now they are saying 'it's my time'," Bukaryeva told AFP.

She echoed a catchphrase printed on the institute's promotional material: "It's your turn to ride."

Asked why more women had not enrolled for the course, which costs 1,500 riyals ($400, 340 euros), Bukaryeva said: "Maybe their families stop them."

Tinawi echoed the sentiment, saying she faced strong reservations from her family.

"My parents said: 'You on a bike? You are a girl. It's dangerous'," she told AFP.

In Saudi Arabia, taking the wheel has long been a man's prerogative.

For decades, hardliners cited austere interpretations of Islam as they sought to justify the ban, with many asserting that allowing them to drive would promote promiscuity.

Many women fear they are still easy prey for conservatives in a nation where male "guardians" -- their fathers, husbands or other relatives -- can exercise arbitrary authority to make decisions on their behalf.

"Expect more accidents" because of women is a common refrain in an avalanche of sexist comments on Twitter.

The government has preemptively addressed concerns of abuse by outlawing sexual harassment with a prison term of up to five years and a maximum penalty of 300,000 riyals.

- 'Climate of fear' -

AFP / FAYEZ NURELDINE Leen Tinawi, a 19-year-old Saudi-born Jordanian, says biking is about "freedom"

The most immediate practical worry for female motorists is the dress code.

Inside the private institute, the bikers wear skinny jeans, with abrasion-proof knee pads wrapped outside -- but that is still unthinkable in public.

Body-shrouding abaya robes -- mandatory public wear for women -- are impractical while riding as their flowing hems could get caught up in the wheels.

Many women also complain that female instructors are in short supply and that classes are expensive.

But topping all concerns is the crackdown on women activists -- while the kingdom trumpets women's rights.

Saudi Arabia this month said it detained 17 people for "undermining" the kingdom's security.

State-backed media published pictures of veteran driving activists, the word "traitor" stamped across them in red.

"It's a complete contradiction for the government to proclaim it is in favour of new freedoms for women and then target and detain women for demanding those freedoms," Samah Hadid, Amnesty International's Middle East director of campaigns, told AFP.

The arrests have unleashed a torrent of global criticism -- including from vocal supporters of Prince Mohammed's reform drive, such as Bernard Haykel, a professor at Princeton University.

Calling the crackdown "a mistake", he has urged the government to "apply due process and the rule of law" in handling jailed activists' cases.

Observers say the arrests seem calculated by the crown prince to placate clerics incensed by the modernisation drive and to send a clear signal that the pace of reform will be driven by him alone, not the activists.

Back at the institute, as the floodlights dimmed and the women bikers donned their abayas to leave, the crackdown was not a topic of discussion.

"A climate of fear is now evident in Saudi Arabia," Hadid said.

THE NEWS: Pancakes to burgers: IHOP suffers backlash in name change

Pancakes to burgers: IHOP suffers backlash in name change
source: AFP

GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA/AFP / SCOTT OLSON

Few expected it to be burgers.

After tantalizing fans for a week, IHOP, the ubiquitous blue-roofed American chain which promises pancakes 24 hours a day, said Monday it was changing its name to IHOb -- International House of Burgers -- in a ploy to expand its market image beyond breakfast.

The move sent pancake breakfast lovers into a furor and sparked snarky broadsides from rivals already deeply rooted in the hamburger business.

"The world is spiraling out of control and I can't understand why IHOP would force us to deal with more unwelcome change," said one Twitter user.

"Why is ihop going thru a mid life crisis," tweeted another.

The venerable chain, 60 years old this year, has long offered sandwiches and burgers across its nearly 1,800 locations.

But the name -- International House of Pancakes -- has always been rooted in their calorie-laden breakfast standards: pancakes, waffles and french toast, often smothered in syrup and whipped cream.

IHOP baited the public a week ago saying it was changing its last initial to "b" in a rebranding exercise.

With over 30,000 replies to their announcement on Twitter, guesses spanned from "bacon" to "bananas", but the consensus seemed to be "breakfast".

Revealing "burgers" on Monday, the company said it was a temporary change to celebrate the release of its new "Ultimate Steakburgers" menu category.

"We are definitely going to be IHOP, but we want to convey that we are taking our burgers as seriously as our pancakes," Darren Rebelez, president of IHOP, told CNN.

"Burgers are a quintessential, American menu item so it makes perfect sense that IHOP ... would go over the top to create a delicious line-up of quality burgers,” said Nevielle Panthaky, the chain's culinary chief.

The move reaped taunts from well-established fast food chains.

Whataburger tweeted: "As much as we love our pancakes, we'd never change our name to Whatapancake."

"Not really afraid of the burgers from a place that decided pancakes were too hard," tweeted Wendy's, another popular burger restaurant.

Some dismayed fans just could not understand the need for it.

"@IHOb the b stands for blasphemy," tweeted one.

"I'm okay with the name change as long as you don't forget your roots," said another.

DineEquity, the company that owns IHOP/IHOb and also the Applebee's chain, sought to assure customers that nothing had really changed.

"Don't worry, Pancakers. We still love pancakes. We're just expanding our burger horizons," it said.

The United Nations mobilized Monday to avert a "fierce, bloody battle" for a key port in Yemen that provides a lifeline for food, medicine and other vital supplies.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Yemen's foreign minister at UN headquarters in New York amid warnings that an attack on rebel-held Hodeida was imminent.

Guterres said his envoy Martin Griffiths was locked in "intense negotiations" with Yemen's rebel Huthis, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to find a "way to avoid the military confrontation in Hodeida."

During his meeting with Yemen's new Foreign Minister Khaled Alyemany, Guterres stressed that "everyone should redouble efforts to find a political solution and avoid a fierce, bloody battle for Hodeida," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

The United Nations pulled all of its international staff out of Hodeida early Monday morning.

For the past two weeks, Yemen government troops backed by the coalition have been closing in on Hodeida, which they claim is being used by Huthi rebels to smuggle weapons.

The Security Council met behind closed doors at Britain's request after London told aid agencies on the ground that it had received a warning from the United Arab Emirates of an imminent attack.

The United Nations has warned that up to 250,000 people were at risk if the coalition moves ahead with an all-out offensive to take the Red Sea port.

UN aid chief Mark Lowcock said an attack on Hodeida would be "catastrophic" and that aid agencies were hoping to "stay and deliver" in Yemen, which the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Yemen relies on imports for 90 percent of its food, and 70 percent of the imports transit through Hodeida, Lowcock told reporters after briefing the council.

Griffiths, who briefed the council by video conference from Amman, has revived a year-old plan to turn over Hodeida port to a neutral party, diplomats said.

- Hoping for a resolution -

Following the closed-door council meeting, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, who is council president this month, called for de-escalation and said the top UN body would be "closely" following developments.

"We are hoping for the efforts of the special envoy to bring a positive resolution. We left it in his hands for the time being," Nebenzia told reporters.

The council did not specifically call on the coalition to refrain from attacking Hodeida and diplomats said there had been much discussion over the president's statement to the press.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had spoken with Emirati leaders and urged them to work with the United Nations but his statement fell short of warning the coalition against launching an all-out offensive.

"I have spoken with Emirati leaders and made clear our desire to address their security concerns while preserving the free flow of humanitarian aid and life-saving commercial imports," he said.

Griffiths is set to present on June 18 a new peace plan for Yemen, but he has warned that military action could derail that effort.

Eleven humanitarian aid agencies, including Oxfam and Save the Children, separately urged British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to threaten to cut off British support to the coalition if it attacks Hodeida.

"If an attack does take place, casualties on all sides will be high, with a likely catastrophic impact on the civilian population," they wrote in a letter to the foreign secretary.

More than 22 million people in Yemen are in need of aid -- 8.4 million of whom are on the brink of starvation, according to the United Nations.

Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has been leading a military campaign to push back the Huthis and restore the internationally recognized government to power.

The conflict has left nearly 10,000 people dead in Yemen, already the Arab world's poorest country.

AFP / SAUL LOEB Many hope Donald Trump's summit with Kim Jong Un will lead to durable peace on the Korean peninsula

Donald Trump's handshake with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday marked a historic moment -- the first meeting ever between a sitting US president and the leader of North Korea.

The US president's often-awkward handshakes with world leaders have sparked ridicule but many hope the one with Kim -- the culmination of months of dramatic diplomacy -- will lead to durable peace on the Korean peninsula.

Here are some other handshakes that shook the world:

- The Koreas: Kim-Moon (2018) -

On April 27, 2018, as the world held its breath, Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in reached across the Military Demarcation Line that divides the two Koreas and shook hands, the result of a remarkable thaw on the peninsula sparked by the Winter Olympics earlier this year.

Kim then stepped over the border for a summit with the South Korean president, making him the first leader from Pyongyang to set foot in the South since the Korean War ended in an armistice 65 years ago.

The two leaders agreed to pursue permanent peace and the complete denuclearisation of the divided Korean peninsula.

- US, Cuba: Obama-Castro (2013) -

At a memorial service for Nelson Mandela on December 10, 2013, US President Barack Obama made headlines when he shook hands with Cuba's Raul Castro, the first such public greeting between leaders of the bitter neighbours after decades of enmity.

Within months there was a rapid thaw. Full diplomatic relations were restored in July 2015, followed by once-unthinkable steps to mend ties.

Obama visited Cuba in 2016 -- the first such trip by an American president in 88 years.

Washington also relaxed its decades-long embargo on the communist-ruled island, and US airlines resumed direct flights to Havana in November 2016.

- N. Ireland: Elizabeth II-McGuinness (2012) -

In a landmark moment in the Northern Ireland peace process, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II met Martin McGuinness, a former top commander in the paramilitary Irish Republican Army during the many years of bloody hostilities with British forces.

The IRA wanted an end to British rule in the province, and for it to be merged with the Republic of Ireland. McGuinness later became one of the figures that helped negotiate an end to the violence.

Then a deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, McGuinness shook hands with the Queen during her June 27, 2012 visit to the province.

It was a gesture towards reconciliation that would once have been unimaginable, with McGuinness' militant past and British security operations still a source of anger for many.

- Israel, Palestinians: Arafat-Rabin (1993) -

After months of secret negotiations in Norway, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat stood in the South Lawn of the White House on September 13, 1993 to witness the signing of the Oslo Accords.

And then, in one of the most dramatic moments in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with US president Bill Clinton's arms stretched around both leaders, Arafat and Rabin shook hands.

The abortive process granted autonomy to the occupied Palestinian territories without creating a separate state.

Rabin was assassinated two years later by a Jewish extremist opposed to the peace process, which faltered in the years that followed.

- Egypt, Israel: Sadat-Begin (1977) -

In what is widely considered a major turning point in the recent history of the Middle East, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat arrived in Israel on November 19, 1977 on a historic visit -- the first by an
Arab head of state to the Jewish nation.
