NEWS: Putin touts Russia's 'right direction' in annual phone-in

SPUTNIK/AFP / Mikhail KLIMENTYEV "Overall, we are moving completely in the right direction. We are on track for durable growth in the economy," Putin said at the start of the phone-in

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday opened his annual televised phone-in, a carefully choreographed Kremlin event in which he promised Russians the country was going in the "right direction".

The annual event allows Russians to submit questions via phone, text and online to the president, who addresses their concerns and weighs in on geopolitical issues.

This year's "direct line" is the first in Putin's fourth presidential term, which has already seen crackdowns on civil society and internet freedoms, and comes a week before Russia hosts the World Cup.

"Overall, we are moving completely in the right direction. We are on track for durable growth in the economy," he said in opening remarks to two moderators introducing questions from the public.

"There are, of course, a number of problems to address," he said of an economy that continues to stall after a crash in 2014 following sanctions introduced by the West over the annexation of Crimea.

The event has in the past lasted over four hours, with the president fielding questions on subjects as varied as his love life, teachers' salaries, Crimea and provincial roads.

State television ran a breathless countdown to the session, updating the number of questions submitted -- some two million as the programme began.

Written questions appeared on screens beside the president during the broadcast, some of them less than flattering about the state of the nation.

"When will Russia start allocating its money to Russians?" one read.

"Why didn't Alexei Navalny get registered for the presidential elections?" asked another, referring to Putin's top critic who was barred from contesting presidential polls in March.

In contrast to previous phone-ins, this year Putin has called on regional leaders and ministers to stand by to go on live with the president to address nitty-gritty questions.

"They will be sitting by the television with bated breath... the phone in their hand and a sedative in the pocket," the Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid joked.

Last year the president jokingly offered ex-FBI chief James Comey political asylum and confirmed that he had grandchildren -- a rare glimpse into an otherwise strictly guarded private life.

The phone-in has in the past seen Putin reject calls to annex Alaska and take a question from the US whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Putin, who was re-elected in a landslide in March, has promised to slash poverty and revive a stalled economy in the face of Western sanctions.

AFP/File / Paul FAITH Pro-abortion protesters stage a demonstration calling for abortion to be legalised in Northern Ireland outside Belfast city hall in Belfast on May 28, 2018

Britain's Supreme Court on Thursday said it could not rule on an appeal against Northern Ireland's strict abortion laws, but that it would have declared them incompatible with human rights laws otherwise.

By a majority decision, the justices said that the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), which brought the appeal, did not have the power to "institute abstract proceedings of this nature".

"It follows that the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction in these proceedings to give relief in respect of the challenge Northern Ireland abortion law," the ruling added.

However, the court also said that a majority of justices would have ruled the current Northern Ireland law incompatible with the European Convention on Human rights (ECHR), raising the pressure on London and Belfast to change their legislation.

"I would have concluded without real hesitation ... that the current state of Northern Ireland is incompatible with Article 8 of the Convention, insofar as it prohibits abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality, rape and incest, but not insofar as it prohibits abortion in cases of serious foetal abnormality," said judge Jonathan Mance.

This view was shared by four of the seven judges.

NEWS: Amazon to show live Premier League football matches from 2019/20

source: AFP

AFP/File / Leon NEAL Amazon will exclusively livestream all 10 matches over a bank holiday period and another 10 during the first midweek fixture programme in December, the BBC reported

Amazon has secured the rights to show English Premier League football matches for the first time in further evidence of their financial might in the bidding wars for sports events, the league said Thursday.

The giant online retailer will show 20 Premier League matches a season for three years, starting from the 2019/20 season.

The US company is the first to break up the previous dominance of Sky and BT Sport.

The EPL gave no details of the scheduling, but the BBC reported Amazon will exclusively livestream all 10 matches over a bank holiday period and another 10 during the first midweek fixture programme in December.

However, the action will only be available to their Amazon Prime UK subscribers, which is the online seller's premium service available for a fee.

Memberships costs £79 a year or £7.99 a month.

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore described Amazon as an "exciting new partner".

"Prime Video will be an excellent service on which fans can consume live Premier League football -- including for the first time in the UK a full round of matches," he said.

Sky and BT will nevertheless show the vast majority of live matches, with 128 and 52 -- BT having been awarded the other package up for grabs on Thursday of 20 games at a reported cost of £90 million -- respectively.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming," said Scudamore.

Amazon, which started as an online retailer, has built up an increasingly impressive sports portfolio and broadcasts the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events -- where they outbid Sky by offering £50 million -- and NFL games.

Scudamore will be delighted with the entry of Amazon as it was his idea to lure either them or their rivals such as Facebook and YouTube into bidding for the rights.

Although a figure has not been released as to how much Amazon -- who have been in talks over the past couple of months over the package -- has paid the Guardian reported the EPL did not get the price they were hoping for as the companies bidding didn't see it as a money maker for them with just two rounds of matches.

In February, Sky Sports paid £3.58bn for four packages, while BT Sport spent £295m on another package.

In a separate announcement the Premier League also agreed that there would be a change in the distribution of money gained from the foreign broadcast deal.

The bix six clubs -- Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham -- managed to get the necessary 14 votes out of the 20 to agree that from 2019/20, any increase in the current international rights package, will be distributed according to league position and not equally distributed between all 20 clubs as it has been up to now.

NEWS: Afghanistan announces ceasefire with Taliban for Eid

Afghanistan announces ceasefire with Taliban for Eid
source: AFP

AFP / WAKIL KOHSAR Afghan Army Chief of Staff, General Sharif Yaftali, said that if the ceasefire holds it 'could be extended'

Afghanistan announced Thursday an apparently unilateral ceasefire with the Taliban for Eid, the holiday that caps off Ramadan, though operations against other groups including Islamic State will continue.

The week-long ceasefire, which was backed by the US and would bring some welcome relief to war-weary civilians, will last "from the 27th of Ramadan until the fifth day of Eid-al-Fitr", President Ashraf Ghani tweeted from an official account, indicating it could run from June 12-19.

It was not immediately clear if the Taliban would agree to the ceasefire, the first during Eid since the US invasion in 2001.

"We are checking with our officials regarding the ceasefire announcement," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP.

The surprise declaration comes on the heels of a fatwa issued by Afghanistan's top clerics branding suicide attacks "haram", or forbidden, and after the Pentagon announced that senior Taliban officials had been negotiating with Afghan authorities on a possible ceasefire.

AFP / The Afghan government indicated the ceasefire will run from June 12 to 15

Nearly 17 years after they were toppled from power, the Taliban are resurgent, with Afghan forces -- who have taken the lead in the conflict since NATO combat troops pulled out in 2014 -- struggling to contain them, while civilians pay a disproportionate price in the fighting.

"(T)he Afghan government directs all the security and defence forces of the country... to stop all the attacks on the Taliban, but the operation will continue against Daesh (Islamic State), Al-Qaeda and other international terrorist networks," Ghani said in an official statement.

Ghani added that more details about the ceasefire will be revealed during a "massive gathering" next week but did not elaborate further.

Deputy interior affairs minister General Akhtar Mohammad Ebrahimi said that if security forces are attacked during the ceasefire period, "your security and defence forces will respond".

General Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, the army chief of staff, added that if the ceasefire holds it "could be extended".

The US will also "honour" the ceasefire, US Forces in Afghanistan said in a statement, though it seconded Ghani's stipulation that this did not extend to IS and other groups.

"We will adhere to the wishes of Afghanistan for the country to enjoy a peaceful end to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, and support the search for an end to the conflict," said General John Nicholson, head of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

- 'One-sided' -

Last month, the Pentagon said that ceasefire negotiations with the Taliban were ongoing.

However analysts were sceptical of any positive response, saying Ghani's announcement appeared to be unilateral.

Kabul-based political analyst Haroon Mir said the Taliban were "highly unlikely" to agree to a ceasefire, and suggested it was more of a political move by Ghani.

AFP/File / SHAH MARAI Afghan President Ashraf Ghani added that more details about the ceasefire will be revealed during a 'massive gathering' next week but did not elaborate further

"I doubt this announcement will change anything on the ground," he added.

Rahimullah Yusufzai, a Taliban expert based in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, agreed.

"A ceasefire normally is negotiated... This is one-sided and I don't expect the Taliban to respond positively," he told AFP.

The announcement comes days after a gathering of Afghanistan's top clerics in the capital Kabul called for a ceasefire and issued a fatwa against suicide bombings and attacks.

An hour after the fatwa was issued on June 4, a suicide bomber detonated outside the gathering, killing seven people.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State group, and was the latest demonstration of militants' ability to hit the capital, which has become the deadliest place in the country for civilians.

It also showed that any ceasefire with the Taliban alone might have a limited effect on security, given the myriad other militant groups infesting Afghanistan.

- 'They have to answer' -

The Taliban view Ghani's government as illegitimate, and have previously said they would negotiate only with the US, whom they consider the main player in the conflict.

In February Ghani unveiled a plan to open peace talks with the Taliban, including eventually recognising them as a political party. At the time he suggested a ceasefire would form part of the plan.

The insurgents did not officially respond, but attacks have proliferated since then, especially in Kabul.

However when coupled with the fatwa, the announcement does put pressure on the Taliban, Yusufzai said.

"If it was only Ghani or the government, then the Taliban wouldn't have cared," he said.

"This is the clerics ... The Taliban cannot just say they don't agree, they will have to come up with an answer."

AFP/File / HOSHANG HASHIMI The ceasefire would bring some welcome relief to war-weary civilians

Social media users desperate for peace quickly called on the insurgents to agree to the ceasefire.

Many were sceptical, though some were more hopeful.

"I hope all parties involved announce ceasefire and not a single bullet is fired anymore," wrote Twitter user Sharyar Hadi. "We are tired of wars and killings."

AFP / RODGER BOSCH Van Breda was handcuffed after receiving triple life terms for the murder of his parents and brother. He was also handed a 15-year sentence for maiming his sister

A young South African man convicted of slaying his wealthy parents and brother and maiming his sister in a frenzied axe attack was handed three life sentences on Thursday.

Judge Siraj Desai described 23-year-old Henri Van Breda's January 2015 rampage as "savage and vicious" with "an almost unprecedented degree of disregard for one's family".

"Each murderous attack on a family member is a severe crime and warrants the severest punishment," Desai told the packed Western Cape High Court in Cape Town after the headline-making trial.

Van Breda, who wore a light grey suit, blue shirt and patterned tie, was also jailed for 15 years for the attempted murder of his sister.

After a trial that had sought in vain to understand the motive for the bloodbath, Van Breda remained emotionless as the sentence was handed down.

AFP / RODGER BOSCH Van Breda was led out of court after sentencing was concluded on Thursday

He was then led away by court officers as his girlfriend watched from the public gallery.

He had denied murdering his 21-year-old brother Rudi and parents Martin, 54, and Teresa, 55, and leaving his sister Marli struggling with near-fatal injuries to her head, neck and throat after the bloody attack.

- 'Axe-wielding son' -

"They were attacks involving a high degree of uncontrolled violence. The victims were unarmed (and) they faced an axe-wielding son or brother, probably not expecting the worst," said Desai.

"We have heard no explanation... you have shown no remorse."

The trial generated global interest in how a privileged son unleashed such a brutal attack on his family, whose fortune -- estimated at $16 million (13.6 million euros) -- was derived from property.

The family had moved to Australia many years ago before returning to South Africa in 2014.

Van Breda was convicted of three counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of obstructing justice on May 21 with the judge describing the verdict as "inescapable".

Defence lawyer Pieter Botha had called for a "merciful" sentencing, arguing that Van Breda was a first-time offender who was "barely 20" when he killed his family.

- 'Sheer seriousness of these crimes' -

He said Van Breda had been in counselling for six months, was "appropriately emotional" when the murders were mentioned, and was taking medication for depression and epilepsy.

Since his conviction Van Breda has been held in the medical wing of South Africa's notoriously violent Pollsmoor prison.

During the trial, Van Breda had told the court that a late-night intruder had entered the family's luxury residence on the ultra-secure De Zalze Golf Estate in Stellenbosch, outside Cape Town.

His claim had echoes of the defence used by Oscar Pistorius, who said he thought a burglar was hiding in an ensuite bathroom to explain why he fired four times through the door, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

But judge Desai systematically took apart the defence case in a five-hour summary of the trial -- and then read a verdict that he said "as a family man, it's difficult" to deliver.

Van Breda himself suffered superficial stab wounds which he said were caused while wrestling with the attacker who was trying to slit his throat. He said he then fell unconscious.

Prosecutors insisted the wounds were self-inflicted and Desai said the axe used in the attack was kept in the house prior to the killings.

Van Breda's motive has remained a mystery and judge Desai pleaded with his defence team to share the true story.

"I'm searching for some human factor that to some degree diminishes the sheer seriousness of these crimes," said Judge Desai at a hearing on Tuesday.

"There must be something... I'm appealing to (him) -- put before me some reason for these attacks."

NEWS: US, China reach $1.4 bn sanctions deal over ZTE: Commerce Dept

US, China reach $1.4 bn sanctions deal over ZTE: Commerce Dept

POOL/AFP/File / Andy Wong US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who announced a deal to ease sanctions on Chinese firm ZTE, is seen at a June 3 meeting in Beijing with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He

Washington and Beijing have reached a deal to ease sanctions that brought Chinese smartphone maker ZTE to the brink of collapse, the US Commerce Department announced Thursday.

The agreement also follows a reported offer by Beijing to ramp up purchases of American goods and thereby drive down the yawning trade deficit between the world's two largest economies -- moving part-way towards meeting a key demand of US President Donald Trump in ongoing trade talks.

ZTE will pay a $1 billion penalty, and put another $400 million in escrow to cover possible future violations before being stricken from a sanctions list.

Under the deal, the Chinese giant will also have to change its entire board of directors and retain outside legal compliance specialists who will report to the Commerce Department for 10 years.

Total US penalties imposed on ZTE now amount to $2.3 billion, according to the Commerce Department.

In April, the Chinese group was cut off from US technology products for violating US sanctions against North Korea and Iran -- measures which threatened to put ZTE out of business.

Washington lawmakers were indignant last month after Trump offered to rescue ZTE as a personal favor to Chinese President Xi Jinping -- even though the company is widely considered a liability for US national cyber-security.

- 'A pretty strict settlement' -

Democrat and Republican senators denounced Trump's offer to ease the ZTE sanctions as an offer that imposed punitive measures the company had already disregarded once before, while garnering no true concessions from China.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told CNBC on Thursday the deal was tough and would keep ZTE on a short leash.

"This is a pretty strict settlement. The strictest and largest settlement fine that has ever been brought by the Commerce Department against any violator of export controls."

Several US lawmakers have warned against easing sanctions on ZTE, citing national security concerns.

The news comes as Trump presses ahead with plans to impose as much as $50 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports to punish Beijing for its alleged theft of American technology and know-how.

Washington and Beijing have pursued a halting series of trade talks, with Trump demanding a $200 billion reduction in its yawning trade deficit with China.

Ross told CNBC the ZTE deal was an enforcement matter that was unrelated to the trade talks, which he has led.

But it came shortly after Chinese officials offered to buy an additional $70 billion in US goods to cut the trade deficit, moving toward meeting one of Trump's central demands on trade.

NEWS: Spain swears in mostly-female government

POOL/AFP / Javier Lizón, J. J. GUILLEN Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his 11 new female ministers

King Felipe VI on Thursday swore in Spain's new pro-EU government, with women holding the majority of ministerial posts.

Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez named 11 women to top posts including defence and economy in a cabinet with six male ministers.

That makes it the European government with the highest ratio of female cabinet ministers, ahead of Sweden's, which has 12 women and 11 men.

Sanchez's administration risks not lasting until the end of the current mandate in 2020, however, given the fragmented state of Spain's political parties.

His Socialist Party holds just 84 seats in the 350-seat congress. That is the smallest parliamentary presence of any Spanish government since the return to democracy in the 1970s.

Sanchez, 46, ousted conservative veteran Mariano Rajoy as prime minister last Friday in a no-confidence vote.

The vote was sparked by corruption convictions against former officials from Rajoy's Popular Party (PP).

It ended more than six years of PP government and ushered in a progressive administration under Sanchez.

- Equality a priority -

The ministers at the swearing-in ceremony at the Zarzuela palace near Madrid broke with tradition by taking their oaths on the country's constitution rather than the Bible.

They followed the example set by Sanchez, who became the first Spanish prime minister to forego religious symbols during his own swearing-in on Saturday.

The first minister to take the oath was veteran Socialist Carmen Calvo, a former culture minister, who became deputy prime minister and will also be in charge of equality.

Equality is a priority for Sanchez's government in a country where women staged an unprecedented strike to defend their rights on March 8.

"This is a government that has to work every day for the most important thing in democracy: to reduce inequalities, and build the greatest equality, that between men and women," she said after being sworn in.

The first measure the Socialists will propose to congress concerns gender violence training for judicial officials, the head of the party's parliamentary group, Adriana Lastra, told reporters.

- 'Probably be an ordeal' -

With its parliamentary minority, the government will rely on the votes of far-left party Podemos as well as Basque and Catalan nationalist lawmakers who supported his no-confidence motion.

AFP/File / PIERRE-PHILIPPE MARCOU Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez, right, will rely on support from far-left Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias, left

Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias wished the new government "good luck", adding during a TV interview that trying to govern with such a small minority in parliament "would probably be an ordeal" for Sanchez.

Podemos is pushing for greater social spending -- a delicate issue given the European Union's demands on budgetary discipline.

Sanchez has said the "main priority" will be to respect Madrid's deficit reduction commitments to the EU.

Spain has promised to reduce its deficit to 2.2 percent of GDP in 2018, which would bring it at last under the three percent limit set by Brussels.

To maintain "stability," Sanchez has also promised to implement the 2018 budget crafted by the previous conservative government.

That budget includes pensions hikes and a salary increase for civil servants.

- Pro-EU government -

AFP / JAVIER SORIANO The appointment of Nadia Calvino as Spain's new economy minister was welcomed by the EU

EU budget manager Nadia Calvino was sworn-in as economy minister in a move welcomed by the EU Commission, and former European parliament president Josep Borrell became foreign minister.

The new Spanish executive's pro-EU credentials sets it apart from certain other parts of Europe.

They contrast with the eurosceptic stance of the populist government about to take office in Italy and the Brexit process in Britain.

Anti-terror prosecutor Dolores Delgado became justice minister and former Supreme Court judge Margarita Robles defence minister.

Other women have been put in charge of budget, education, employment and health.

The new interior minister is Fernando Grande-Marlaska, an openly gay former judge at Spain's top-level National Court.

He has handled cases against Basque separatist group ETA.

New foreign minister Borrell, who fiercely opposes the independence movement in his home region of Catalonia, will be tasked with defending abroad his government's commitment to Spanish unity.

The challenge to Spain's "territorial integrity" is "possibly the biggest problem a country can face," he said after being sworn in.

Meritxell Batet, another Catalan, has been put in charge of relations with Spain's regions.

She will have the prickly task of trying to ease the situation in her own deeply divided home region.

Sanchez's new team also includes a minister in charge of science -- Spain's first astronaut, Pedro Duque.

NEWS: Trump trade war threat sets up G7 summit clash

AFP / ludovic MARIN Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (L) and French President Emmanuel Macron (R) arrive for their joint press conference in Ottawa

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron put Donald Trump on notice Thursday that they would not be intimidated at the upcoming G7 summit, as a trade war between Washington and its allies looms.

Past summits of the Group of Seven powers -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- have often been marred by anti-globalist demonstrations in the host city.

But as the leaders of the world's richest democracies set off Thursday for Quebec on the eve of their annual meeting, the greatest threat to the liberal world order was due to be inside the fence.

Trump comes to this week's G7 summit touting an America First agenda that hits US allies with stiff tariffs and threatens multilateral free trade deals.

His stance will receive such a hostile reception from the other leaders that some observers have suggested renaming the G7 summit the G6+1 -- and Macron said they should not hesitate to reach agreements without Trump.

While both Macron and Trudeau have forged cordial relationships with Trump, they made it clear they would stand tall -- especially in the face of US duties on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Europe, Japan and Mexico.

AFP/File / Brendan Smialowski President Donald Trump comes to the Quebec G7 touting an America First agenda that hits allies US with trade tariffs and threatens multilateral free trade deals

"The G7 is an opportunity for us to get together and have frank, open discussions among nations who have long been allies and friends," Macron told reporters, with Trudeau at his side.

"There will be subjects on which the (US) president is not totally in sync with the others -- I'm thinking of course of climate change and trade," the French leader said.

"Our common goal is to try to find a text that can be signed by everyone," he explained, but added that "the desire to sign a common G7 declaration must not outweigh the need to be mindful of the content."

"We Europeans and the Japanese are not ready to give up everything to get" Trump's signature, he said, adding that would be a "mistake."

But Trump is not going to bend.

"Getting ready to go to the G-7 in Canada to fight for our country on Trade (we have the worst trade deals ever made)," he tweeted Thursday.

- All-out trade war -

Trump may well be distracted by preparations for his June 12 summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, which will be in Singapore immediately after the rich-world talking shop in Canada.

But it seems likely that the US leader will enjoy a warmer encounter with the autocrat from Pyongyang than with his Canadian hosts and European and Japanese allies.

Leaders like Trudeau and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel admit it will be difficult to even agree on a joint communique at the two-day meeting.

dpa/AFP / Peter Kneffel German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday that there would be "no compromise for its own sake" at the G7 summit

Merkel said Wednesday that there would be "no compromise for its own sake" and that dropping the statement "may be the more honest way."

"We know certainly that there will be frank and sometimes difficult discussions around the G7 table, particularly with the US president on tariffs," the Canadian premier told reporters.

Canada's Trade Minister Francois Philippe Champagne was blunter, declaring: "What we are seeing is that the world economic order is under pressure, under attack."

Top White House economics advisor Larry Kudlow, in line with the long-standing expert consensus in the G7 industrialized democracies, opposed tariffs before joining Trump's team, but now says he agrees that the trade status quo hurts America.

"Until we can have reciprocal relationships, we will not have free trade, and we will not have fair trade," Kudlow said.

Europe does not come to Quebec from a position of strength. Britain's Theresa May is mired in endless Brexit negotiations and Italian premier Giuseppe Conte only formally took power on Wednesday.

The G7's only Asian member, Japan, has close relations with the White House, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's support for Trump's North Korean outreach has not seen his country spared the tariffs.

- End of the world order -

The G7 developed in part because the world's rich powers -- despite their supposed Cold War victory -- became frustrated in working through the broader multilateral system with lesser rivals.

The globalized economy that they helped build had winners and losers, of course, but until Trump's election, the United States was seen as the system's uncontested leader and a major beneficiary.

But now, according to Laurence Nardon of the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI), one of the main actors on the international stage is no longer following the same script.

"It completely calls into question the international system," she told AFP. "This G7 summit is a new act in the drama. So far, the six are standing strong, but Trump has not finished."

Since coming to office in January 2017, Trump has pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal and the TPP Pacific free trade deal.

The summit begins Friday in La Malbaie, in Charlevoix, north of Quebec, and runs until Saturday, when Trump flies on to Singapore.

The other leaders of G7 nations must not be afraid to reach agreements without US President Donald Trump at their upcoming summit, French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday, as a trade war between Washington and its allies looms.

Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a joint press conference after private talks the night before to form a united front ahead of the Group of Seven summit that begins Friday.

While both Macron and Trudeau have forged cordial relationships with Trump, they made it clear they would not be intimidated by the US leader -- especially in the face of US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Europe, Japan and Mexico.

"The G7 is an opportunity for us to get together and have frank, open discussions among nations who have long been allies and friends," Macron told reporters, with Trudeau at his side.

"Our common goal is to try to find a text that can be signed by everyone. (...) That said, I agree with what Justin Trudeau has said many times -- the desire to sign a common G7 declaration must not outweigh the need to be mindful of the content," he explained.

"We Europeans and the Japanese are not ready to give up everything to get" Trump's signature, he said, adding that would be a "mistake."

Trudeau heaped scorn on Donald Trump's national security justification for the new metal tariffs.

"It is laughable to say that Canada, France... can represent a threat to America's national security, as we are the best allies that the US has had for a long time," Trudeau said.

He and Macron also noted that the tariffs would hurt American workers.
