Six critically endangered black rhinos were en route from South Africa to Chad on Thursday in a pioneering project to re-introduce the animals to a country where they were wiped out by poaching nearly 50 years ago.

The wild black rhinos were loaded onto a plane at Port Elizabeth airport on the South African coast in a 3,000-mile (4,800-kilometre) journey to Chad's Zakouma National Park.

After the translocation, which took two years of planning, the rhinos will be released into small enclosures before being allowed to roam freely through the vast park.

Security has been strengthened at Zakouma, in the south of Chad, with officials saying that poaching has been "practically eliminated" thanks to African Parks, an international conservation group.

"All too often, headlines on rhinos are about their demise as they teeter on the brink of extinction," said African Parks chief Peter Fearnhead.

"However, today we are participating in an historic event and peering into a brighter future for this species which has persisted on this planet for millions of years."

AFP/File / Alexander JOE Fewer than 25,000 rhinos, of which just 5,000 are black rhinos, remain in the wild in Africa due to poaching

The four females and two males were taken by road from the Addo park in South Africa to the airport in special ventilated crates that were loaded into the plane by a crane.

Teams of vets monitored the animals' stress levels.

- 'Truly hopeful story' -

Fernhead said the project was a "truly hopeful story for rhinos across Africa", and that it would encourage population growth and boost biodiversity in Chad.

Fewer than 25,000 rhinos, of which just 5,000 are black rhinos, remain in the wild in Africa due to a surge in poaching.

Black rhinos are rated as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Rhinos are targeted to feed a booming demand for rhino horn in China, Vietnam and other Asian countries, where it is believed to have medicinal qualities.

Northern white rhinos disappeared from Chad several decades ago and the last western black rhino was recorded there in 1972, after decades of poaching pushed both subspecies to local extinction.

African Parks assumed management of Zakouma in 2010 and secured the park from poaching, allowing wild animals to thrive.

The park has a dedicated rhino ranger unit to ensure the animals will be protected, as well as a well-equipped law enforcement team and aerial surveillance.

"It is a mark of the strength of our partnership with African Parks and the transformation of Zakouma in to a secure sanctuary that we are now able to bring rhinos back," said Chad's ambassador to South Africa Youssouf Mahamat Itno.

African Parks reintroduced rhinos to Rwanda in 2017.

Trump confirms 'reimbursement' of lawyer for payment to porn star

AFP / Don EMMERT Donald Trump -- shown here with new attorney Rudy Giuliani -- had previously denied all knowledge of the payment to Stormy Daniels, before admitting last week that his personal lawyer Michael Cohen struck a "deal" with the porn star on his behalf

US President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday he reimbursed his personal lawyer for a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels to stop what he described as her "false and extortionist" claims of an affair.

Trump's comment contradicted his earlier statements that he had no knowledge of the hush payment by his long-time lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

The payment was made days before the November 2016 US presidential election, which has prompted allegations of a possible violation of campaign financing laws.

In a burst of tweets, Trump denied the funds used to make the payment were connected to his campaign, calling it a "private agreement."

He also said non-disclosure agreements were "very common among celebrities and people of wealth."

"Mr. Cohen, an attorney, received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign, from which he entered into, through reimbursement, a private contract between two parties, known as a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA," Trump said.

"The agreement was used to stop the false and extortionist accusations made by her about an affair, despite already having signed a detailed letter admitting that there was no affair," he said.

"Prior to its violation by Ms. Clifford and her attorney, this was a private agreement. Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll [sic] in this transaction."

The admission came after former Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who recently joined the president's legal team, disclosed Wednesday that Trump had reimbursed Cohen for the payment over a period of several months.

It also followed an FBI raid in early April on Cohen's home, office and hotel room in which information related to the payments was reportedly seized.

Daniels, who claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006, has sued to have the non-disclosure agreement invalidated on grounds that he never signed it.

In his tweets, Trump insisted the agreement is "in full force and effect and will be used in Arbitration for damages against Ms. Clifford (Daniels)," he said.

- Money's source -

Giuliani told Fox News host Sean Hannity the money was funneled through a law firm "and the president repaid it."

"That was money that was paid by his lawyer, the way I would do, out of his law firm funds or whatever funds, it doesn't matter. The president reimbursed that over a period of several months," Giuliani said.

He added that the payment did not represent a campaign financing violation because it was "not campaign money."

AFP/File / EDUARDO MUNOZ ALVAREZ Stormy Daniels, shown with her attorney Michael Avenatti, has filed a lawsuit against the US president after he trashed her claim that she had been threatened by a man representing Trump in 2011

Giuliani told The New York Times he had documentation proving Trump had reimbursed the sum, which he said "removes the campaign finance violation" prospect.

"Some time after the campaign is over, they set up a reimbursement, $35,000 a month, out of his personal family account," Giuliani told the Times, adding that Trump gave Cohen between $460,000 and $470,000 via this method to repay the sum to the porn star as well as "incidental expenses."

Trump had previously denied all knowledge of the payment to Daniels, before admitting last week that Cohen struck a "deal" with the porn star on his behalf.

Asked by reporters on Air Force One earlier this month about the deal, Trump said: "You'll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You'll have to ask Michael," he said.

Pressed on whether he knew where Cohen got the money to make the payment, he said: "No, I don't know. No."

- 'Blatant lie' -

Giuliani also told The Wall Street Journal Trump was "probably not aware" of the payment at the time it was made, having given Cohen broad "discretion to solve" a variety of situations.

GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA/AFP/File / SPENCER PLATT Michael Cohen, Trump's lawyer, has legal troubles of his own: his home and office were recently raided by the FBI in connection with a criminal investigation

Daniels' lawyer Michael Avenatti reacted swiftly to the revelation, calling out the US president over his "lies."

"We predicted months ago that it would be proven that the American people had been lied to as to the $130k payment and what Mr. Trump knew, when he knew it and what he did in connection with it," he wrote on Twitter.

"Every American, regardless of their politics, should be outraged by what we have now learned. Mr. Trump stood on AF1 and blatantly lied."

Daniels filed a lawsuit against the president on Monday for defamation after he trashed her claim that she had been threatened by a man representing Trump in 2011.

Iran threatens to quit nuclear deal if US walks away

AFP/File / George OURFALIAN Ali Akbar Velayati, chief foreign policy advisor to Iran's supreme leader, is seen during a visit to Aleppo in northern Syria on November 7, 2017

Iran warned Thursday it will quit a landmark nuclear deal if President Donald Trump pulls the United States out of the accord, while also criticising European states over "concessions" to the Americans.

Trump has threatened to abandon the agreement when it comes up for renewal on May 12, demanding his country's European allies "fix the terrible flaws" or he will re-impose sanctions.

The nuclear deal was struck in 2015 between Iran and Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, then led by Barack Obama.

Under the pact, sanctions were lifted in return for a commitment not to pursue a nuclear bomb, but Iran says it is not reaping the rewards despite complying with the deal.

"If the United States withdraws from the nuclear deal, then we will not stay in it," Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign policy adviser to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was quoted as saying by the state television website.

As Iran's all-powerful leader, Khamenei has the final word on all policy matters, foreign and domestic, including on the nuclear deal.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, also issued a warning to the United States on Thursday in an English-language video posted on YouTube.

"If the US continues to violate the agreement, or if it withdraws altogether, we will exercise our right to respond in a manner of our choosing," said Zarif.

"The US has consistently violated the agreement, especially by bullying others from doing business with Iran," he said.

- Iran criticises Europe -

Zarif also criticised European nations.

"In the last year or so, we've been told that President Trump is unhappy with the deal, and it now appears that the response from some Europeans has been to offer the United States more concessions, from our pocket," said Iran's top diplomat.

"This appeasement entails promises of a new deal that would include matters we all decided to exclude at the outset of our negotiations, including Iran's defensive capabilities and regional influence."

Zarif was responding to Britain, France and Germany who said on Sunday that the nuclear agreement left out some "important elements".

These included what happens when the current deal expires in 2025, Iran's ballistic missile programme and its "destabilising regional activity", they said in a statement.

The three European countries that signed the deal have repeatedly tried to persuade Trump not to abandon it.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated his commitment to the accord but admitted that it needed strengthening.

"I don't know what the US president will decide on May 12," Macron said during a visit to Sydney.

"I just want to say whatever the decision will be, we will have to prepare such a broader negotiation and a broader deal, because I think nobody wants a war in the region, and nobody wants an escalation in terms of tension in the region," he said.

The Islamic republic has always denied it sought a nuclear weapon, insisting its atomic programme was for civilian purposes.

Velayati warned against any move to try to renegotiate the 2015 deal.

"Iran accepts the nuclear agreement as it has been prepared and will not accept adding or removing anything," he said.

"Even if countries allied with the United States, especially the Europeans, seek to revise the nuclear agreement... one of our options will be withdrawing from the accord," Velayati added.

North Korean coal miners have resorted to mobilizing their children to raise money amid spiraling coal prices and subsequent salary losses, reports sources inside the country.

"As the price of coal has gone down considerably, coal miners cannot earn what they used to and are having a hard time making a living. Now there are kids as young as 10 years old carrying loads of coal to earn money," a resident of South Pyongan Province told Daily NK on May 1.

"Instead of going to school, they are coming out with their mothers to move coal to earn enough to survive. The kids are transporting bags of at least 15-20 kg of coal over their shoulders around five times each day."

One bag of coal is sold for around 1,000 KPW (0.12 USD) in one coal mining district in South Pyongan Province, according to the source, leaving these workers with just enough in profits to purchase a 1 kg bag of corn (2,000 KPW, 0.25 USD) after a day’s work and transportation fees are accounted for.

Previously, when the coal industry was more active, individual entrepreneurs paid miners for bags of coal which they would then sell at a higher price. But now, with coal exports blocked by sanctions, it has become more difficult to find individuals willing to invest in paying the workers, a source in North Pyongan Province said.

He explained that coal miners who have relied upon earnings from their work to provide for their families have reportedly said they are left with no choice but to use the extra help from their children.

"Working through the day is not even enough in most cases, so the children usually begin moving coal at 3:00 am, collecting the hauls at their house, and then once it's dark, they go around selling it door-to-door," the North Pyongan Province-based source said.

"People without enough money must do this, or else they will not be able to eat."

North Korean authorities monitoring domestic reaction to summit

The North Korean authorities are reportedly monitoring citizen reactions to last Friday's inter-Korean summit, focusing on potential backlash or negative effects of mentions of "denuclearization" in state media in the days following the event. Sources inside the country has described at least one instance of residents modifying their reactions to avoid negative repercussions from the initiative.

A source in Ryanggang Province described a recent incident during a conversation with Daily NK on April 30, saying, "People were gathered around talking about the inter-Korean summit, when the Socialist Women's Union leader suddenly came over and informed them that 'the Party has issued orders for a domestic review of the people's reactions.’"

"She also said that they should be more careful with their words and instead say positive things about the country's efforts," the source continued, saying that the remarks were a suggestion to the group to avoid problems that may arise if they are too open about their opinions of the summit.

The source described how the gathering was an impromptu one, beginning with just a couple of people but growing in size after word spread. "The [Socialist Women's Union leader], whose husband is a Party cadre, actually said a lot of unconventional things at the gathering,” she explained.

These so-called "residential zone women"– a term used in North Korea to refer to women who are part of the Socialist Women's Union and who are charged with the ideological education and socialist group activities of a number of households – have taken on the role of family breadwinners over the years through their market activities, subsequently rising in social status.

Descriptions by a separate source in Ryanggang Province of one of these women openly acknowledging and suggesting tips for "expected behavior" in response to government orders represents a significant development, as she holds a position as an official local role model and thought-leader in the eyes of the state.

The Socialist Women's Unit leader apparently tried a number of times to encourage the group to speak positively about the government's efforts.

"She said that 'big changes are certainly coming' and that 'we should hold our tongues and have hope that the day will soon come that we can live easily,'" the additional source said. She also apparently described "denuclearization" as "an end to the production of scary weapons" when asked by someone in the group what the term meant.

But despite the warnings people are receiving over expressing opinions about the summit, the source described frequently hearing optimistic talk of improving inter-Korean relations.

"Anywhere people are gathered, there are discussions of summit-related news, mostly expressing hopes about South Korea. One person said that 'relations will improve because [President] Moon looks like he's easy-going,'" the initial source explained.

"Embedded in these remarks is a sense of longing for the South and to go forward living as one people, together."

North Korean state newspaper Rodong Sinmun ran a story on the front page of the morning of the inter-Korean summit, April 27, notifying the public of Kim Jong Un's travel across the South Korean border for the meeting.

Sources inside the country told Daily NK that interest in the event is rising, expressing surprise that it was actually happening.

"People are calling today, April 27, an historic day as Kim Jong Un and the South Korean president met on the South Korean side of Panmunjom," a source in Ryanggang Province near the border with China told Daily NK.

"There are high hopes for improved relations now, especially since crossing into the South was something that the previous leaders (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) didn't do."

The meeting marks the first time that the precise location and time of a top-level event attended by a North Korean leader has been openly broadcast to the world in real time – details that were previously kept tightly controlled in order to protect the leader's safety.

"Most people know about the meeting as the news was already made public, and everyone now expects (inter-Korean) relations to soon improve," the source said.

"There haven't yet been any organized events related to the summit," a source in North Hamgyong Province added, referring to Party- or government-organized lectures or other events which almost all North Koreans must regularly attend.

"Maybe some contents of the summit and instructions over what we must do as a result will be presented to the people after the summit is over."

According to the North Hamgyong-based source, most people have learned about the summit either from phone conversations with others in China or elsewhere, or from lectures or study sessions organized by the Workers' Party Central Committee politburo.

"Discussions among residents will really take off even more now as news of the summit was on the front page of the Rodong Sinmun today," an additional source in Ryanggang Province added.

"There will be talk of exchanges with South Korea and even the possibility of unification everywhere you go."

It has been reported that a man identified as Mr. Kang (Senior Colonel, late 50s), the head of the Foreign Counter-Espionage office in charge of North-Eastern China for the Ministry of State Security (MSS) fled overseas in February. He is also known for having a connection to Kim Il Sung’s Mother, Kang Pan Sok.

In a conversation with a source in China close to North Korean affairs, it was revealed that “Mr. Kang was residing at the Chilbosan Hotel (now Zhongpu International Hotel) in China, overseeing operations at the foreign counter-espionage office for Russia, China, and Southeast Asia, before he suddenly disappeared on February 25. He was reported to have taken a machine capable of printing American dollars and a lot of foreign currency with him.”

According to the source, Mr. Kang was a significantly important individual, often being called the “Troika” of the Foreign Counter-Espionage Office. He was in charge of directing intelligence and ground operations in Russia and China, and supervised the development of essential talent for North Korea’s nuclear program by covertly arranging exchanges between Russian and Chinese scientists.

He is also seen as a very prominent individual due to his ancestry, being a direct descendant of Kang Pan Sok’s father, Kang Don Uk. (Kang Pan Sok was a key figure during the anti-Japanese movement under Japanese occupation, credited with the creation of the Anti-Japanese Women’s Association.) From Kim Jong Un’s perspective, Mr. Kang was vital to preserving North Korea’s lineage.

Accordingly, Kim Jong Un ordered his immediate execution upon hearing news of the defection. “Right after the incident occurred, 7 agents were immediately dispatched with the mission of assassinating Mr. Kang. After returning empty-handed, 3 more agents were sent out," the source said.

“Despite presently being unable to locate Mr. Kang, the search is still underway. It is presumed that he has gone to France or Great Britain.” Fearing that he will succeed in acquiring asylum in Europe, it appears that North Korea is going to great efforts to kill him before this occurs.

It can also be speculated that the efforts to assassinate him are being prompted by the fact that he had access to large amounts of information related to North Korea’s foreign affairs. Both sources noted that he ran away with “top secret information.”

Mr. Kang’s motivation for defection was referenced as “discovery of corruption." Mr. Kang’s son was subjected to a domiciliary search conducted by Group 109 (a team tasked with cracking down on foreign media inside North Korea) in response to him watching South Korean and US movies, during which documents inferring corrupt behavior by Mr. Kang were found.

A source in Pyongyang, who corroborated the details of the defection and assassination orders, said that "ledgers that detailed activities and money earned in secret while abroad were discovered during the search, prompting an immediate summons being issued for Mr. Kang. Having a bad feeling about the situation, Mr. Kang then decided to flee."

“After the ‘Thae Yong Ho’ asylum incident, the North Korean government changed its rules for elite officials overseas, banning them from living with their families. Mr Kang’s family is currently still in North Korea, as he was not allowed to bring them with him," he said.

North Korea in emergency border crackdown following inter-Korean summit

The North Korean authorities have reportedly stepped up security in the border areas in the days following last Friday's inter-Korean summit and signing of the joint 'Panmunjom Declaration' committing to peace and denuclearization on the Peninsula. The move is being seen as an attempt to ward off any potential incidents arising from the more relaxed outward appearance of the government.

A source in North Hamgyong Province told Daily NK on April 29, "The vast majority of people are quite excited over the inter-Korean summit, but the authorities have ordered police and border guards to carry out emergency border measures."

"The emergency security measures were scheduled to finish April 30, but I don't know if it will last beyond that," he added. "With the Rodong Sinmun widely circulating details of the summit, the atmosphere has shifted towards anticipation of more inter-Korean exchanges in the future. But now a lot of people are worried after this sudden intensification of border security."

North Korean state newspaper Rodong Sinmun printed commentary and over 60 photos of the inter-Korean summit a day after the event on Saturday, April 28. Ordinary North Koreans were surprised to learn of the details, including the fact that Kim was the first of the country's leaders to visit South Korea.

"It seems that the authorities thought defections would rise or there would be an influx of foreign information amid the change in atmosphere, leading them to focus on strengthening security in the border region," added a source in Ryanggang Province.

This revelation, including opposition to the crackdown among ordinary people, highlights the stark contrast between the North's outward promotion of peace and reconciliation and intensifying internal controls.

"A person in Hoeryong told me how he was warned by soldiers on guard at the border when he went to wash some farming tools in the (Tumen) river. He remarked angrily in reaction that 'the people and army aren't even unified in this country, so what is this talk of [national] unification?'" said a separate source in North Hamgyong Province.

"The soldiers who have to take on the emergency security measures may see these kinds of assignments as unavoidable, but using banmal (casual grammatical form of speech) when speaking to an adult like that is considered crude. I have also heard people say that, in preparation for unification, the soldiers' ideology and also their integrity will need to be reformed."

With a population yearning for rapid improvements to North-South relations and a government intent on limiting the domestic impact of any such related changes, the possibility of a crack emerging in the system grows. Even as the North engages with the South, the authorities are likely to continue with their recent crackdown on South Korean popular media, as it still represents a significant threat to their system of oppression.
