Shearer defends 'fantastic' Scudamore after controversial payout

Shearer defends 'fantastic' Scudamore after controversial payout

AFP / Anthony WALLACE Alan Shearer said the English Premier League's outgoing boss, Richard Scudamore, had done a "fantastic" job.

England great Alan Shearer on Friday defended the controversial £5 million ($6.4 million) farewell gift collected by clubs for outgoing English Premier League boss Richard Scudamore, saying he had done a "fantastic" job.

The payment -- stumped up following a whip-round of £250,000 each from the league's 20 clubs -- has sparked criticism from fans, and accusations of greed.

Scudamore, who is due to step down next month after 19 years in the post, earns a reported salary of £2.5 million per season.

But Shearer -- whose record of 260 Premier league goals still stands, 12 years after he retired -- said it was no different from rewarding high-performing executives in the business world.

"However it's come out, I'm certain he didn't ask for it, and he's been a fantastic leader for the Premier League," he said at an appearance in Hong Kong.

"Wherever you go in the world now, all they want to talk about is the EPL."

However, Shearer questioned England's decision to bring record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney out of international retirement for a farewell appearance in Thursday's 3-0 victory over USA.

"I felt we could honour someone without giving them the cap," he said. "I would have made him (Rooney) the guest of honour instead."

Rooney, 33, was honoured before kick-off in London with a guard of honour and a plaque, and took the field as part of an otherwise youthful England team.

Shearer said he was excited about the "energy" of Gareth Southgate's England, who reached their first World Cup semi-final since 1990 this year in Russia.

"Gareth and the players have got everyone back in love with England again," he said.

"It's the first time in a long time we've got an England manager who's over-achieved. For a long time we had managers that under-achieved."

England face Croatia on Sunday in the Nations League, where they will hope to avenge their defeat in the World Cup defeat last four and stay on course for reaching Euro 2020.

"They're definitely on the right track," Shearer said. "I hope that in a few years we'll have a title."

Track legend Keino turns state witness in Kenya graft case

AFP/File / Tony KARUMBA Kipchoge Keino will now give evidence against figures including Kenya's former sports minister

Kenya's former Olympic chief Kipchoge Keino will become a witness for the prosecution after charges of corruption at the 2016 Olympics against him were dropped, his lawyer said Friday.

Keino, 78, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, was due to be charged with six other officials, including former Kenyan sports minister Hassan Wario, over the misappropriation of more than 55 million shillings ($545,000).

But the prosecution told the court on Friday that the charges against Keino had been dropped and he will appear as the key prosecution witness.

His lawyer Cecil Miller confirmed that Keino was a free man.

"The new charge says that Keino is no longer an accused person. He has been converted to a prosecution witness," Miller told AFP.

"It is a big relief to us all," he added.

The accused are facing charges ranging from abuse of office to failing to comply with laws on the management of public funds.

They cover the alleged crimes of embezzlement, the purchase of unauthorised air tickets, overpayment of allowances and expenditure on unauthorised persons, all to the amount of 55 million shillings.

Corruption is rife in Kenya, with millions of dollars of public funds going missing each year, and the country was left red-faced during its 2016 Olympic campaign which also saw athletes' team uniforms stolen by officials.

Rockets thrash 'banged up' Warriors, Nuggets bounce back

GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA/AFP / MATTHEW STOCKMAN Denver's Monte Morris puts up a shot in the Nuggets' blowout win over the Atlanta Hawks

The Houston Rockets humbled the two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors 107-86 on Thursday in a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals.

The Rockets took full advantage of the absence of Warriors sharpshooter Stephen Curry, who missed his fourth straight game with a groin injury.

They posted their sixth victory in eight games after a 1-5 start and climbed to .500 at 7-7 in the still young season.

Draymond Green returned for the Warriors after serving a one-game suspension meted out by Golden State after his confrontation with teammate Kevin Durant.

The Rockets coped with their own upheaval as shortly before the game general manager Daryl Morey confirmed they parting ways with 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony, who had played in just 10 games since arriving as a free agent prior to the season.

Whether Curry's absence or continuing tension between teammates played a role, the Warriors endured a horrendous shooting night, connecting on 42.1 percent of their shots from the field and just 22.2 percent from three-point range.

Not a single Warriors starter made a three-pointer -- a first since March of 2013. The Rockets, up 47-41 at halftime, pulled away relentlessly -- putting the game out of reach with a 21-2 scoring run to open the fourth quarter.

"We're banged up a little physically and we're banged up spiritually -- there's no getting around that," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "We've got to fill up our cup, get our spirit back, get our energy back, and we're going to. It's a long season."

Green, Durant and Klay Thompson combined to shoot 0-for-9 from beyond the arc while neither Andre Iguodala nor Damian Jones attempted a three-pointer.

Durant led the Warriors with 20 points and Thompson added 10 -- not enough as Iguodala and Jones combined for 10. Green came away with zero points, but Kerr liked what he saw from him.

"Draymond may not have had his best night tonight, but I liked his approach," Kerr said. "He was genuine out there. He was competing.

"Now the rest of the team we've got to all lift our spirits up and get back on the saddle."

James Harden led Houston with 27 points. James Ennis added 10 while Chris Paul and Clint Capela chipped in 10 apiece, Paul adding five rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

"I just thought our guys right from the start were locked in defensively," said Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni. "They did a great job.

"You don't beat these guys like this unless everybody plays well."

- Nuggets dominate -

In Denver, the Nuggets halted a four-game skid in decisive style, routing the Atlanta Hawks 138-93.

Juancho Hernangomez scored a season-high 25 points and Paul Millsap and Gary Harris scored 18 each as seven Denver players scored in double figures.

It was a welcome return to form for a Nuggets team that was off to its best start in four decades before hitting the skids with four straight defeats.

"We needed the win," said Hernangomez after the Nuggets' most lopsided victory of the season. "We were just playing with freedom. Everybody played hard. Everybody matched up on defense. Off of our defense, it was easy to run get back to who we are."

GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA/AFP / Sean M. Haffey Los Angeles Clippers big man Montrezl Harrell reacts after a dunk in the Clippers' NBA win over the San Antonio Spurs

The Los Angeles Clippers held off the determined San Antonio Spurs 116-111 to notch a third straight win.

Lou Williams's 23 points off the bench for Los Angeles included a go-ahead three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining as the Clippers followed up overtime wins over Milwaukee and Golden State with another close victory.

The Clippers led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter, but San Antonio knotted it at 107-107 with 1:13 to play on two free throws by LaMarcus Aldridge.

Williams responded with his three-pointer that gave Los Angeles the lead for good, Danilo Gallinari producing four clutch free throws in the final 30 seconds to help seal the win.

Despite 34 points from DeMar DeRozan, the Spurs lost their third straight.

Boycott still her hero as May bats on Brexit sticky wicket

Boycott still her hero as May bats on Brexit sticky wicket
source: AFP NEWS

AFP / GLYN KIRK, Tolga AKMEN Theresa May has compared her position to former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott

It says something about Britain's fondness for a sport continental Europeans often find baffling that as Theresa May battles with Brexit, the prime minister has compared herself to England cricket great Geoffrey Boycott.

At a press conference on Thursday, after the resignation of four ministers including Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and calls from within her own party for her to resign, a reporter asked May if she should quit as "captain".

"One of my cricket heroes was always Geoffrey Boycott," May replied. "And what do you know about Geoffrey Boycott? Geoffrey Boycott stuck to it and he got the runs in the end."

May emphasised the point in a radio interview on Friday: "The thing about Geoffrey Boycott was he was absolutely steady. He kept there at the crease, he carried on. He, if you like, just relentlessly went for his goal and I think that's important."

During an England career that ran from the mid 1960s to the early 1980s, Boycott piled up the runs and became known as one of the best defensive batsmen of his generation.

As an opener, Boycott had the difficult task of taking on the opposition's fast bowlers when they were at their freshest and most menacing.

Boycott, now a cricket pundit, took the responsibility seriously, not least because he had grown up in the cricket heartland of Yorkshire, representing the northern county throughout his entire career.

Openers who got out to a reckless shot were not so much guilty of a mistake as moral degeneracy in the eyes of Yorkshire's most ardent followers.

Batsmen lower down the order could play the more attractive, flashy and crowd-pleasing strokes, yet it was often a solid, unspectacular hundred by Boycott that put his team in a winning position.

- Let down by his own side -

It is easy to see how these qualities might have appealed to May, trying to secure a Brexit deal on a "sticky wicket" -- a popular cricketing metaphor in Britain used to describe difficult circumstances.

Boycott's career, however, was also hugely controversial, including a three-year period of self-imposed exile from England duty and repeated accusations he was a "selfish" batsman, more concerned with his own figures than the team's success.

Indeed the low point of his brief time as England captain came when he was deliberately run-out by Ian Botham during a 1978 Test match in New Zealand because it was felt his slow-scoring was endangering the side's chances of victory.

Conservative MP Greg Hands tweeted a passage from Boycott's biography referring to the incident.

Asked by the Press Association news agency if he was drawing a parallel with the current situation in the Conservative Party, he replied: "I'm just a keen student of 1980s cricket."

In Yorkshire, Boycott commanded both fierce loyalty and bitter dislike in a manner more akin to the passions generated by Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Britain's main opposition Labour Party, than May.

There were repeated moves to sack and reinstate Boycott.

May's foes will hope they need just the one attempt to force her from office.

She does though retain an ally in Boycott when it comes to rejecting calls for a second Brexit referendum.

In a September television interview, Boycott said of those campaigning for another ballot: "They just want to keep having a new vote until they get what they want.

"They're like a spoilt child in the playground where in the old days the teacher would've given them a smack."

Japan promoter says Mayweather bout with kickboxer back on

Japan promoter says Mayweather bout with kickboxer back on
source: AFP NEWS

RIZIN FIGHTING FEDERATION/AFP / Handout The match-up between US boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr and Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa was called off earlier this month

An unprecedented match-up between boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr and a Japanese kickboxer half his age is back on, according to the Japanese promoter behind the fight.

The bout between Mayweather and Tenshin Nasukawa, first announced earlier this month, was abruptly scrapped by the American boxer shortly after he revealed his plans to take on the kickboxer.

But on Friday, the CEO of mixed martial arts promotor RIZIN said the fight planned for New Year's Eve was back on.

"Misunderstanding with Floyd Mayweather has been resolved," Nobuyuki Sakakibara tweeted on his account.

"He will face off against Tenshin Nasukawa on December 31, New Year's Eve."

"I will talk about the details at a press conference when I return to Japan," he added, alongside a picture of himself, Mayweather, and a third man.

The tweet comes after Mayweather told the US website TMZ Sports on Wednesday in California that the fight would go ahead.

"We're going to make it happen," he reportedly told the site.

"It's a no-brainer."

When the fight was first announced, it was unclear what rules would govern the match-up between the retired welterweight boxer and Nasukawa, an unbeaten kickboxer.

But Mayweather told TMZ Sport the face-off would involve "no kicking."

"Rules? It's going to be a little boxing exhibition," he said.

"I'm moving around with the guy for nine minutes, and of course it's going be the highest paid exhibition ever," he added.

The unbeaten 41-year-old, who won world titles in five different weight divisions, made headlines earlier this month when he announced on his Instagram page that he was coming out of retirement for the fight.

"I want to give the people what they want -- blood, sweat and tears," he told a news conference in Tokyo afterwards.

But just two days later he posted a lengthy statement on his social media accounts saying he had been "blindsided" by organisers of the bout and had "never agreed" to the fight.

British PM backed in Brexit battle

AFP / Daniel LEAL-OLIVAS Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves her 10 Downing Street office

British Prime Minister Theresa May received the backing of the last remaining pro-Brexit heavyweights in her cabinet on Friday as she battled to salvage her EU divorce deal and her job.

After a tumultuous Thursday in which four ministers resigned, MPs slammed her draft agreement and members of her own party plotted to oust her, May received key support from the top Brexiteers left in her government.

All eyes were on Environment Secretary Michael Gove -- a Vote Leave figurehead in Britain's 2016 EU membership referendum -- who had stayed ominously silent as his colleagues quit around him.

Asked Friday if he had confidence in May, he said: "I absolutely do. It's absolutely vital that we focus on getting the right deal in the future."

AFP / Ben STANSALL A worker sweeps the street outside the British prime minister's 10 Downing Street office

Many media outlets reported that Gove had earlier rejected an offer to replace Dominic Raab, whose decision Thursday to quit as Brexit minister over the EU deal sparked fears the government could collapse.

Eurosceptics in May's Conservative party are also plotting to unseat her by tabling letters of no confidence in her leadership.

But International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, another leading Brexit supporter, backed her and her deal.

"A deal is better than no deal -- businesses do require certainty," he said. "What we need now is stability."

- 'Best deal for Britain' -

Seeking to win over the public, May made a rare outing on a radio phone-in.

"I truly believe this is the best deal for Britain," May said of the proposed EU withdrawal agreement, adding that she was "very sorry" that ministers including Raab had quit.

AFP/File / Emmanuel DUNAND Dominic Raab resigned as Brexit minister, saying the prime minister's draft deal with the EU did not honour promises made to voters

May told LBC radio she would appoint a new Brexit chief "over the next day or so".

One caller, a local Conservative councillor, urged May to "do the right thing in the national interest and stand down".

She also faced comparisons with prime minister Neville Chamberlain and his 1938 appeasement of Nazi Germany's dictator Adolf Hitler.

"We are not going to be locked in forever to something that we don't want," May insisted.

Brexiteer MPs fear the deal would keep Britain shackled to Brussels long after Brexit on March 29, 2019.

EU supporters say it would leave the UK on worse terms than it has inside the bloc and are calling for a second Brexit referendum to break the logjam.

- No confidence moves -

Despite the support from Gove and Fox, May could yet face a vote of no confidence from her own MPs.

AFP / Gillian HANDYSIDE Timeline of the Brexit talks

At least 48 Conservative MPs are required to submit letters of no confidence in the party leader to trigger a vote and 21 have publicly confirmed they had done so.

If May wins such a vote, she cannot be challenged for 12 months.

May's de facto deputy David Lidington said she would win a no confidence vote "handsomely" and urged colleagues to withdraw their letters.

"I've seen no plausible alternative plan from any of those criticising her or wanting to challenge her position," he told Bauer Radio Scotland.

May's Conservatives have no majority in parliament's lower House of Commons, but govern through an agreement with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

However, DUP lawmakers were among MPs from all sides who lined up in the chamber on Thursday to warn they could not support her Brexit deal.

- Pound rebounds -

The pound slumped 1.7 percent against the dollar on Thursday -- the biggest drop for more than two years, sparked by fears the turmoil at Westminster could result in Britain leaving the EU with no deal.

But it rebounded on Friday, and around 1300 GMT, sterling was up 0.6 percent at $1.2843, while one euro was worth 88.31 pence.

The 585-page draft deal aims to ensure a smooth divorce from the EU after more than four decades of membership and outlines a transition period for both sides.

Key provisions seek to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland, protect citizens' rights and settle Britain's outstanding payments to the bloc.

EU member states have until Tuesday to examine the deal and to agree the wording of a parallel political statement setting out goals for the bloc's future relations with London.

A special EU summit to seal the hard-fought Brexit agreement will be held on November 25.

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said Brexit advocates who peddled an "absurd political promise" must now choose to either accept the deal or face "economic disaster".

AFP / - Thousands of trees were felled by winds that destroyed homes and vehicles in India's Tamil Nadu state

At least 11 people were reported dead Friday as a powerful cyclone battered India's eastern coast, authorities said.

Thousands of trees were felled by winds that destroyed homes and vehicles as hundreds of thousands fled to shelter homes.

Cyclone Gaja packed winds of up to 120 kilometres (75 miles) per hour as it barrelled into Tamil Nadu state after hitting the coast near Nagapattinam early Friday bringing heavy rains, India's weather office said.

The ruling party in the prosperous state said on Twitter that 11 people were killed in the powerful storm that has flooded several low-lying areas along the coastline on the Bay of Bengal.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party provided no further details about the victims.

The government has announced compensation of one million rupees ($14,000) to victims' families as hundreds of emergency workers were trying to restore roads and electricity.

The storm was predicted to move westwards and gradually weaken before heading into the Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department said.

Torrential rain caused waterlogging and threatened landslides. There were widespread power outages in the region.

Authorities closed schools and colleges and thousands of emergency workers were on standby along with two naval ships with divers, helicopters and inflatable boats.

Authorities had warned fishermen since Sunday not to risk going out to sea.

Gaja is the second major storm to hit India's east coast in recent weeks. Cyclone Titli battered Odisha state in October, killing at least two people.

Storms regularly hit southern India between April and December. Last year, Cyclone Ockhi left nearly 250 people dead in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Home DNA tests doom anonymity for sperm, egg donors

Home DNA tests doom anonymity for sperm, egg donors

AFP/File / JOSH EDELSON Ryan Kramer found his biological father and eight half brothers or sisters through a DNA test website

All Ryan Kramer had to do was to swab his cheek and embark on nine days of genealogical research to identify his biological father, a man who thought he would remain anonymous when he donated his sperm and never took a DNA test himself.

The year was 2005, when consumer DNA tests were in their infancy. Kramer was 15.

Thirteen years later, the explosion of individual DNA test kits has opened the floodgates for people who were born from sperm or egg donations. Increasing numbers of people are using the technology to uncover the identities of their donors.

In the growing field of assisted reproduction, donors used to be guaranteed anonymity.

But things have changed, according to genetic geneologist CeCe Moore, founder of DNADetectives.

"It would be naive to think that a person could donate sperm or eggs and stay anonymous in the United States," said Moore. "It isn't going to happen."

Now, even if they never send their own DNA to a consumer ancestry site, donors can be identified indirectly by their genetic proximity to a distant cousin who took a DNA test.

With at least 10 million people having taken a DNA test in the United States alone, probability alone suggests that nearly all the population could be linked somehow to one of the registered profiles online.

"Disclosure will occur at some point in time. And I think that's just an inevitable consequence," said Peter Schlegel, president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

"And I would be shocked if that was not part of the standard discussion in the next five years."

- Finding his donor -

The site that sold Kramer his DNA kit found two men in its database whose genome resemblance meant they shared a common ancestor with Kramer, dating back to the 17th century.

AFP/File / Eric BARADAT The four DNA websites that offer match services -- Ancestry, 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage -- today have so many users that it is rare for someone not to find at least one distant relative

Kramer and his single mother, Wendy, consulted public records in Los Angeles. They knew the donor's date of birth -- the only biographical information given out by the sperm bank -- and wanted to see if anyone matched the unusual last name of the two men found.

Bingo. They found their match.

Kramer contacted the man, who said he was "thrilled" to hear from him. The two have stayed in regular contact ever since.

"He was the very first donor conceived person to find his donor through DNA testing," said Wendy Kramer, who founded the Donor Sibling Registry in 2003. Now it has 60,000 members.

- Extended family -

The four DNA websites that offer match services -- Ancestry, 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage -- today have so many users that it is rare for someone not to find at least one distant relative.

From that second or third degree cousin, traditional genealogy tools can be employed to rebuild a family tree up to the shared ancestor, such as vital records, death notices and obituaries, census records, or newspaper archives.

Then, the possible donor can often be nailed down by elimination based on sex, age and location. The more public records there are, the faster the search.

Thanks to DNA sites, Kramer has found eight half brothers or sisters since 2017 -- five of those just this summer.

In all, he has found 16 half siblings since 2005.

"It's a reality that I could be continuing to find half siblings every couple of months or every year for the rest of my life, which is wild," said Kramer.

"But it feels kind of normal to me."

Kramer, who is 28 and a product manager at Google's life sciences company Verily in San Francisco, said the "experience has been overwhelmingly positive."

"I consider these people like extended family members."

- Banned in France -

Between 2015 and 2017, sales of DNA test kits boomed in the United States and allowed websites to build a critical mass of DNA profiles.

It was around that time when Erin Jackson learned she had been conceived with donor sperm.

She immediately tested her DNA and up popped a half-brother.

"The resemblance was undeniable," said Jackson, a 38-year-old freelance writer.

Then, based on the name of a second cousin discovered on the site, and after some substantial genealogical research, she and her husband managed to trace the ancestry down to the donor.

Once contacted, he asked her not to write again.

Jackson says she hopes the end of anonymity will force sperm banks to limit the number of children born to the same donor.

"Having less anonymous donors is a good thing," she said.

In the US, there are no restrictions. In Britain, a maximum is set at 10 families per donor.

The US case points to a future where anonymity laws in other countries regarding egg and sperm donations may become moot.

France, for instance, is now debating whether to end anonymity for donations. The law is currently strict there, and consumer DNA tests are banned.

But it is not hard to get around the ban, and in theory it would only take a few hundred thousand profiles to start to get matches.

It is already the case in Britain and, to a lesser extent, in the Netherlands, Moore said.

North Korea tests new 'ultramodern tactical weapon'

North Korea tests new 'ultramodern tactical weapon'

KCNA VIA KNS/AFP / KCNA VIA KNS North Korea's official news agency released only one picture to accompany its report on the weapons test, one that gave few clues as to what kind of device was involved

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the testing of a "newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon", Pyongyang's state media reported Friday, a move seen by analysts as more of a political message than a serious provocation.

It marked the first official report of a weapons test by North Korea since it began a delicate diplomatic process with Washington over its nuclear and missile programme.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, quoting an unidentified government source, said the weapon could be a long-range cannon that the North has been developing for many years.

"Kim Jong Un... visited the test ground of the Academy of Defence Science and supervised a newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon test," said the official Korean Central News Agency.

It said the test was successful but did not specify the type of device involved.

Pyongyang's suspension of testing for atomic weapons and ballistic missiles has been key to this year's rapid diplomatic developments and North Korea-US negotiations, and has been repeatedly praised by President Donald Trump.

Trump and Kim met at a historic summit in Singapore in June, where they signed a vaguely worded document on denuclearisation of the peninsula.

Hours after the KCNA report, the US State Department said it was "confident" the process remained on track.

AFP/File / Ed JONES Kim Jong Un says the latest 'tactical weapon' test marks a 'decisive turn in bolstering the fighting capacity' of North Korea's military

"At the Singapore Summit, President Trump and Chairman Kim made a number of commitments regarding final, fully verified denuclearisation and creating a brighter future for North Korea," a statement said.

"We are talking with the North Koreans about implementing all of those commitments. We remain confident that the promises made by President Trump and Chairman Kim will be fulfilled."

Progress since Singapore has stalled as Washington and Pyongyang spar over the document's meaning. A return to testing would cast grave doubts over the future of the process.

But analysts all but ruled out the North having broken its promise to suspend nuclear or missile launches while negotiations are underway with the US.

There was no immediate indication any such test had been detected by the South.

"We don't see it as a military provocation of any significance", a defence ministry official told journalists without saying what the device was.

- 'Political message' -

Shin Beom-chul, an analyst at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies, said the test was likely aimed at sending "a political message" to Washington about the current stalemate.

"Generally, tests of new high-tech weapons are conducted in secret," Shin said. "But North Korea announced it publicly to show its frustration."

AFP / John SAEKI North Korean reach

KCNA released only one photograph to accompany its report, showing uniformed men taking notes as Kim talked. The background gave few clues to what kind of weapon was involved.

Kim expressed "great satisfaction" and said the test marked a "decisive turn in bolstering the fighting capacity" of the North's military, KCNA said.

The weapon had been developed over a long period and its "great success serves as another striking demonstration of the validity of the Party policy of prioritising defence science and technology and the rapidly developing defence capability", it added.

The news, which came almost a year after Pyongyang's last test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, recalled the repeated announcements of 2017.

Those included by far North Korea's most powerful nuclear blast to date and rockets that brought the whole of the US mainland into range.

Soon afterwards Kim declared the development of his nuclear arsenal -- which Pyongyang has long said it needs to defend itself against a possible invasion by the US -- complete.

Korea Summit Press Pool/AFP / Korea Summit Press Pool, MANDEL NGAN Trump and Kim met in a historic summit in Singapore in June, where they signed a vaguely worded document on denuclearisation of the peninsula

The Winter Olympics in the South then triggered a rapid diplomatic rapprochement on the peninsula, heralding the Singapore meeting and three summits between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

A second encounter between Kim and Trump is expected in the new year.

But Pyongyang is demanding sanctions imposed against it over its weapons programmes are eased and has condemned US demands for what it calls its "unilateral" disarmament as "gangster-like".

Washington insists the measures should stay in place until the North's "final, fully verified" denuclearisation.

Professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul told AFP the test was "a signal to the US sent ahead of the high-level talks that its own patience is also wearing thin".

British PM bids to win over the public in Brexit deal battle

POOL/AFP / Matt Dunham Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May made a rare outing on a radio phone-in to defend her Brexit deal as members of her own party plotted to oust her

British Prime Minister Theresa May faced the public on Friday to defend her Brexit deal as she battles to salvage the agreement and her own political future.

May made a rare outing on a radio phone-in during which she faced a call to step down after a tumultuous Thursday in which ministers resigned and members of her own party plotted to oust her.

"I truly believe this is the best deal for Britain," May said of the proposed EU withdrawal agreement, adding that she was "very sorry" that ministers including Brexit secretary Dominic Raab had quit.

AFP/File / Emmanuel DUNAND Dominic Raab resigned as Brexit minister, saying the prime minister's draft deal with the EU did not honour promises made to voters

All eyes were on Environment Secretary Michael Gove, the highest-profile pro-Brexit campaigner left standing in May's cabinet, to see whether he would follow others out the door.

But a source close to Gove, a Vote Leave figurehead in the 2016 referendum on Britain's European Union membership, said the minister would remain in his post "to ensure the best outcome for the country".

Many media outlets reported that Gove had been offered the position of Brexit secretary.

May told LBC radio she had a "very good conversation" with Gove and would be appointing a new Brexit chief "over the next day or so".

"I don't want to see any of my cabinet colleagues who've been doing a good job in the cabinet feeling the need to resign," she added.

- 'Stand down' -

One caller, a local councillor in her centre-right Conservative Party, urged May to "do the right thing in the national interest and stand down".

She also faced comparisons with prime minister Neville Chamberlain and his 1938 appeasement of Nazi Germany's dictator Adolf Hitler.

"We are not going to be locked in forever to something that we don't want," May insisted.

Brexiteer MPs fear the deal would keep Britain shackled to the Brussels, while EU supporters say it would leave the UK on worse terms than it has inside the bloc and are calling for a second Brexit referendum to break the logjam.

May could yet face a vote of no confidence from her own MPs.

PRU/AFP / HO Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg Jacob Rees-Mogg submitted a letter of no-confidence in the prime minister

Conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg, the high-profile leader of the Brexit hardline European Research Group, submitted a letter of no-confidence on Thursday.

At least 48 letters from Conservative MPs are required to trigger a vote of no confidence in the party leader. But a majority of the party's 315 lawmakers would have to vote against May in order for her to be ousted -- and if she wins, she cannot be challenged for 12 months.

- Allies back away -

May's Conservatives do not have a majority in parliament's lower House of Commons and MPs from all sides lined up in the chamber on Thursday to say her draft deal would be voted down, satisfying neither Brexiteers nor pro-EU loyalists.

The Conservatives rely on Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party for a slim majority but the DUP are prepared to vote against the deal, fearing it splits the province off from the rest of the UK in order to prevent a hard land border with the Republic of Ireland.

Asked whether DUP leader Arlene Foster had withdrawn her party's backing, May said: "I haven't had a testy exchange with Arlene on that" and insisted the DUP's overall support for the government was still intact.

The 585-page draft deal aims to ensure a smooth divorce from the EU after more than four decades of membership and outlines a transition period for both sides.

Key provisions seek to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland, protect citizens' rights and settle Britain's last bill.

The pound steadied versus the euro and rose against the dollar, having been hammered on Thursday over the Brexit turbulence.

Sterling was up 0.4 percent at $1.2822 in morning trading, while one euro was worth 88.61 pence.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index gained 0.5 percent to 7,071.59 points.

EU member states have until Tuesday to examine the deal and to agree the wording of a parallel political statement setting out goals for the bloc's future relations with London.

A special EU summit to seal the hard-fought Brexit agreement will be held on November 25.

Root ton gives England 200-plus lead in second Sri Lanka Test

AFP / Ishara S. KODIKARA England captain Joe Root celebrates after scoring a century during the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy on November 16, 2018

England skipper Joe Root hit an attacking century to counter Sri Lanka's spin and push the tourists' second-innings lead past 200 in the second Test on Friday.

Root took on the spin challenge to register his 15th Test ton soon after the tea break as he raised his bat to a standing ovation from travelling English fans in Kandy.

The tourists were 264 for six, stretching their lead to 218 after one over of the final session with Ben Foakes, on 19, batting alongside Root, on 103 off 121 deliveries.

The star batsman built crucial partnerships including a 74-run fifth wicket stand with Jos Buttler, who made 34. England lead the three-match series 1-0.

Root, along with other England batsmen, used the sweep and reverse sweep to great effect despite Akila Dananjaya taking two of his three wickets in a fast-paced second session of play.

Buttler dragged one of Dananjaya's mystery spin deliveries onto his stumps while trying to reverse sweep. Moeen Ali was trapped lbw for 10 after failing to connect with an attempted sweep.

Earlier the left-handed Rory Burns, who is playing just his second international match, registered his maiden Test half-century before being trapped lbw off Malinda Pushpakumara for 59.

Dilruwan Perera had wasted little time in sending nightwatchman Jack Leach back to the pavilion for one in just the second over of the day.

Burns then put together 73 runs for the second wicket with Keaton Jennings, who made 26, to steady the innings and help England overcome their 46-run deficit.

POOL/AFP/File / Oded Balilty Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is plotting his next moves after his defence minister resigned over a controversial Gaza ceasefire, throwing his coalition into crisis and raising the possibility of early elections

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was battling to keep his government afloat on Friday after Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman quit over a ceasefire deal for Gaza.

Left with a single seat majority in parliament after the walkout by Lieberman and his hawkish Yisrael Beitenu party, most media saw little way for Netanyahu to avoid calling a snap general election.

The veteran prime minister was expected to hold crunch talks later on Friday with his other main right-wing rival, Education Minister Naftali Bennett, whose religious nationalist Jewish Home party has threatened to quit unless he is given Lieberman's job.

The Gaza ceasefire, which ended the worst flare-up between Israel and the territory's Islamist rulers Hamas since a 2014 war, faced its first major test later on Friday as Palestinian demonstrators were expected to gather along the border for mass protests that have triggered deadly violence in previous weeks.

The deal has already drawn heavy criticism, however, in Israeli communities near the border that faced barrages of rockets earlier this week.

Hundreds joined a demonstration in Tel Aviv on Thursday despite a promise from Netanyahu of more public money for emergency services.

Pro-Netanyahu freesheet Yisrael Hayom daily predicted that the prime minister would do all he could to avoid a general election while his hard-won security credentials were at issue.

"Holding elections with the fiasco in Gaza in the background cracks the image of the ultimate leader that he has built over the course of years," it said.

"The chances of stopping this speeding train appear impossible, but Netanyahu is still trying."

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, whose centre-right Kulanu party hold 10 seats, has reportedly told Netanyahu that a snap election is necessary to provide a stable government to keep the economy on track.

But Yisrael Hayom said Bennett was key to efforts to avoid an early election and could yet prove Netanyahu's political salvation.

"Naftali Bennett as defence minister and Netanyahu as prime minister could together project stability and embark on a coordinated offensive against anyone who gets in the way," it said.

In a speech on Thursday, Bennett did not reiterate the resignation threat but made his case for why he should get the defence post.

"The most dangerous thing for the state of Israel is that we begin to think that there is no solution to terrorism, to terrorists, to missiles," he said.

"There is a solution. When Israel wants to win, we will win."

AFP / MENAHEM KAHANA Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett, one of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main right-wing rivals, gives a speech in Ramat Gan on November 15, 2018

There were no official details of when or where Bennett would meet Netanyahu on Friday or what public statements if any would be made.

Hundreds of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Thursday evening calling for tougher action against Hamas which has portrayed the ceasefire and Lieberman's resignation as a victory.

Netanyahu -- flanked by Kahlon, Interior Minister Arie Deri and army top brass -- met with the leaders of Israeli border communities.

He briefed them on military efforts to quell Hamas attacks and also announced a 500 million shekel ($139 million, 119 million euro) two-year package to improve emergency medical and social services, a government statement said.

With a major domestic political battle on his hands, Netanyahu cancelled a planned two-day visit to Austria next week for a conference on anti-semitism and anti-Zionism.

There has long been speculation that Netanyahu would call a general election before its scheduled date of November 2019.

Police have recommended he be charged in two separate corruption cases and the attorney general is expected to announce in the coming months whether to put him on trial.

Analysts say the prime minister would be better positioned to fight any charges with a fresh mandate from the voters.

But he would not have chosen to go the polls with voters' attention focused on the Gaza ceasefire and his rivals' efforts to outbid his security credentials.
