THE NEWS: Zimbabwe opposition rejects 'fake' Mnangagwa victory

AFP / MARCO LONGARI Mnangagwa's supporters celebrated his election victory

Zimbabwe's opposition on Friday rejected what it said were the "fake" results of landmark elections in which President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared victor.

The former ally of Robert Mugabe won 50.8 percent of the vote in Monday's historic first polls since the autocrat's ousting last year, according to the Zimbabwe Election Commission -- just enough to avoid a run-off against opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, who scored 44.3 percent.

Chamisa, who has lashed out at what he called "unverified fake results", was due to give a press conference in the capital Harare on Friday but it was broken up by several dozen riot police armed with tear gas cannisters.

Tense exchanges followed as police ejected journalists from the hotel, but Chamisa's spokesman said shortly after that the press conference would go ahead.

Mnangagwa, who was chosen as Mugabe's successor in the ruling ZANU-PF party in November after the brief military intervention that deposed him, hailed the election result as a "new beginning" for Zimbabwe.

Opposition allegations of foul play had already sparked a deadly crackdown on protesters in Harare on Wednesday when troops opened fire, killing six.

Soldiers and police had cleared the city centre Thursday as the government vowed not to tolerate any more protests, but by Friday the streets and markets were crowded as usual.

In the suburb of Mbare, jubilant ZANU-PF supporters waved party banners as music blared from a car.

"This is a new Zimbabwe, we are happy," said Tendai Mugadzi, a 32-year-old IT specialist.

AFP / Zinyange AUNTONY Chamisa has rejected what he called the "fake" election results

He was untroubled that Mnangagwa had won by a wafer-thin margin.

"It just shows that this was a free and fair election," he said.

- 'Mugabe's baggage' -

Chamisa blasted the handling of the election, writing on Twitter: "The level of opaqueness, truth deficiency, moral decay & values deficit is baffling."

But President Cyril Ramaphosa of neighbouring South Africa swiftly called for political leaders to accept the result, calling Mnangagwa to congratulate him.

Ramaphosa, in a statement, expressed concern over the protest deaths, but said the opposition "must follow legal remedies provided for in the constitution and electoral law" if they disputed the results.

"Mnangagwa's task was not just to win the election, but to convince the international community of a new Zimbabwe by winning it cleanly and fairly," said Charles Laurie of analysts Verisk Maplecroft.

"The killing of six protestors and questions over his government's conduct at the polls, means Mnangagwa drags virtually all of Mugabe's baggage into his presidency," he added.

He called the swift crackdown on protests "a stark demonstration of how Mnangagwa intends to rule".

AFP / John SAEKI Timeline of events in Zimbabwe since 1980

Since independence from Britain in 1980, Zimbabwe has known only two presidents -- Mugabe, who ruled with an iron fist for 37 years, and his onetime right-hand man Mnangagwa.

The new president had promised a free and fair vote that would turn the page on years of brutal repression, end Zimbabwe's international isolation and attract foreign investment to revive the shattered economy.

But Chamisa has repeatedly alleged that the vote was rigged, charging that the electoral commission -- synonymous with fraud under Mugabe -- had once more helped ZANU-PF to steal an election.

AFP / Zinyange AUNTONY Justice Priscilla Chigumba (C) declares Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner of Monday's presidential election

A spokesman for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said early Friday that the party was planning to take the outcome to the courts, though a legal challenge appears to offer little hope of overturning the outcome.

The electoral commission has rejected allegations of bias and rigging, and international observers praised the largely peaceful conduct of the vote itself.

But European Union monitors said they found an "un-level playing field" that stacked various factors in favour of ZANU-PF, including heavy coverage by state media.

- Huge challenges ahead -

Turnout was high at over 80 percent in most of the country's 10 provinces.

In the parliamentary election, also held on Monday, ZANU-PF won easily.

Mnangagwa, 75, was the clear election front-runner, but Chamisa -- a lawyer and pastor 35 years his junior -- sought to appeal to young and urban voters.

Mnangagwa was allegedly involved in voter intimidation during the 2008 elections when then opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off after at least 200 of his supporters were killed in attacks.

The president faces massive challenges in his promise to restore an economy that Mugabe left in disastrous shape, presiding over the seizure of white-owned farms, a hyperinflationary surge and an investment exodus.

Previously solid health and education services are in ruins, while millions of Zimbabweans have fled abroad to seek work.

"We cannot even tell where we are going from here," said Stephen Nyangani, a 34-year-old clothes designer in Harare who does not earn enough to pay for school fees for his two children.

"I doubt our lives will improve," he added.

THE NEWS: China's Huawei eyes smartphone summit after passing Apple

AFP / ERIC PIERMONT Huawei CEO Richard Yu said the company shifted 95 million smartphones in the first six months of the year

China's Huawei on Friday said it could replace Samsung as the world's top smartphone maker by late next year, just days after data showed it surpassed Apple for the number-two spot despite being essentially barred from the key US market.

The chief of Huawei's consumer division, Richard Yu, made the remark at the release of business results for the first half of 2018, during which unlisted Huawei said it shipped more than 95 million smartphones, an increase of about 30 percent.

"It's no question that we become the number two next year. In Q4 next year it's possible we become number one," Yu said in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city where Huawei is based.

He added that "the past six months have been incredible".

Huawei took second place from Apple in a tightening global smartphone market during the second quarter, according to figures released Tuesday by tech-industry trackers International Data Corporation (IDC).

South Korean titan Samsung remained on top in April-June, shipping 71.5 million handsets for a 20.9 percent market share, IDC said.

But Huawei sold 54.2 million phones for a 15.8 percent market share, followed by Apple's 41.3 million iPhones that gave it 12.1 percent of the market.

It was the first time since early 2010 that Apple was not in the top two.

IDC said 342 million smartphones were shipped during the second quarter, down 1.8 percent from the same period of 2017 and the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines.

Market saturation and rising prices are among factors blamed for cooling growth rates.

The leader in global telecommunications equipment, Huawei is essentially blocked from selling phones in the United States on security grounds owing to suspicions of the company's links to the Chinese government.

Huawei has long disputed any such links.

Frozen out of the US phone market, Huawei has made inroads worldwide largely by shipping high volumes of its cheaper handsets in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Mo Jia, a Shanghai-based smartphone market analyst with Canalys, said achieving Yu's end-2019 goal would be "very challenging" given the market doldrums and competition.

"After all, it does not have the ability to enter the world’s third-largest market -- the US. This is an obvious shortcoming," Mo said.

"For Huawei to surpass Samsung, it depends on whether it can continue to carry out its current strategy of pursuing low-end product volume."

THE NEWS: Turkey dismisses US 'threats, sanctions' over detained pastor

Turkey dismisses US 'threats, sanctions' over detained pastor
source: AFP

AFP / MOHD RASFAN Pompeo met Cavusoglu on the sidelines of a regional security meeting in Singapore

Turkey and the US failed to resolve the diplomatic standoff over a detained pastor on Friday, with Ankara's foreign minister warning that sanctions and threats would not work.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said ahead of talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu that Washington was "very serious" in demanding the release of Andrew Brunson.

"The Turks were on notice that the clock had run and it was time for Pastor Brunson to be returned and I hope they’ll see this for what it is, a demonstration that we're very serious," Pompeo said in Singapore.

"Brunson needs to come home. As do all the Americans being held by the Turkish government," he added. "They've been holding these folks for a long time. These are innocent people."

Brunson, who led a Protestant church in the Aegean city of Izmir, was moved to house arrest last week following nearly two years in jail on charges of espionage and supporting terror groups.

The US has hit two top Turkish officials with sanctions over his detention, prompting Ankara to threaten reciprocal measures.

"We have said from the start that the other side's threatening language and sanctions will not get any result. We repeated this today," Cavusoglu said in televised remarks from Singapore where he and Pompeo are attending a regional security summit.

Brunson, whose trial began in the spring, faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted.

Two Turkish employees of US consulates in Turkey are also currently in jail on terror charges and another is under house arrest, while several Americans have been caught up in the crackdown that followed a failed 2016 coup.

The State Department has said it continues to favour a diplomatic approach, but spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters earlier this week that the pastor's detention "has gone on for too long".

On Friday Nauert said Pompeo and Cavusoglu had a "constructive conversation" and "agreed to continue to try to resolve the issues between our two countries".

Cavusoglu also said the talks were "extremely constructive" but warned in comments to Turkish media that all the issues would not be solved "after one meeting".

- Bitter diplomatic feud -

Pompeo and Cavusoglu spoke by phone on Wednesday as the US announced sanctions on Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu. The US claims both men played a major role in the arrest and detention of the pastor.

President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Pompeo have made Brunson's release a priority.

AFP/File / - The US is demanding the release of Andrew Brunson, who led a Protestant church in Izmir before his detention in October 2016

His detention has fuelled a bitter diplomatic feud between Turkey and the US, whose relations have already deteriorated in recent months over the Syria conflict.

The standoff appears to be one of the most serious crises between the two NATO allies in modern history, along with the rows over the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.

Brunson was initially detained in October 2016 during Turkey's crackdown following an attempted putsch.

He stands accused of carrying out activities on behalf of two organisations Turkey considers terror groups.

One is led by the US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara says was behind the failed coup, while the other is the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The pastor denies the charges and his defence team argues the case is built on questionable witness statements. His next hearing is set for October 12.

THE NEWS: 'Spycam porn' sparks record protests in South Korea

'Spycam porn' sparks record protests in South Korea
source: AFP

AFP/File / Jung Hawon Organisers claim more than 55,000 people attended a protest against spycam porn in Seoul last month

Even a record heatwave will not keep Claire Lee from joining tens of thousands of South Korean women at a mass protest Saturday against secretly-filmed spycam pornography -- as anger over the issue swells, prompting national soul-searching.

Since May, the monthly demonstration in Seoul has shattered records to become the biggest-ever women's protest in South Korea where the global #MeToo movement has unleashed an unprecedented wave of female-led activism.

The target of their fury: so-called "molka" or spycam videos which largely involve men secretly filming women in schools, offices, trains, toilets and changing rooms and which are so prevalent they make headlines on a daily basis.

AFP/File / Jung Hawon Thoise caught secretly filming women have included school teachers, professors, doctors, church pastors, government officials, police officers and even a court judge

"Entering a public bathroom is such an unnerving experience these days," Lee said, adding that she always looked around the walls to see if there were any "suspicious holes".

"You never know if there's a spycam lens hidden inside... filming you while you pee," the 21-year-old student told AFP, saying she sometimes stabbed the holes with a pen to shatter any secret lenses, or stuffed tissues inside them.

The statistics are startling, with the number of spycam crimes reported to police surging from around 1,100 in 2010 to more than 6,500 last year.

The offenders have included school teachers, professors, doctors, church pastors, government officials, police officers and even a court judge.

AFP/File / Jung Hawon Campaigners have called for harsher punishments for those who film, distribute and view such images and urged tougher regulations to restrict the sale of high-tech spycam equipment

In some cases, the victims' own boyfriends or relatives were responsible for the crimes, in a troubling reflection of South Korea's deep-rooted patriarchal norms.

Fed up of living in fear, women are fighting back.

More than 55,000 attended last month's protest in Seoul, according to its organisers, although police put the attendance at around 20,000.

"The pent-up anger among women has finally reached a boiling point", one of the protest organisers who only identified herself as Ellin told AFP.

- Lucrative business -

Asia's fourth-largest economy takes pride in its tech prowess, from ultra-fast Internet to cutting-edge smartphones.

But these advances have also given rise to an army of tech-savvy peeping Toms, with videos widely shared in internet chatrooms and on file-sharing sites, or used as adverts for websites promoting prostitution.

Although all manufacturers of smartphones sold in the South are required to ensure their devices make a loud shutter noise when taking photos -- a move designed to curb covert filming -- many offenders use special apps that mute the sound, or turn to high-tech spy cameras hidden inside eye glasses, lighters, watches, car keys and even neckties.

A 43-year-old man was arrested last month for secretly filming occupants of Seoul motels for four years, installing ultra-mini lenses inside TV speakers and other equipment after posing as a guest.

A police raid uncovered more than 20,000 spycam videos at his home.

In June a 34-year-old man was arrested for secretly filming women inside toilets and selling thousands of videos online for up to 100,000 won ($90) apiece.

Justice is rarely served -- most offenders are fined or given suspended jail terms, which many women's rights groups decry as a mere slap on the wrist.

Except, campaigners say, in the rare cases where the perpetrator is female and the victim male.

The arrest in May of a woman who secretly filmed a male model posing nude at a Seoul art college, days after she shared the image online, was a catalyst for the unprecedented protests this summer.

"The police have rarely responded when countless female victims asked for the immediate arrest of the offender", Seo Seung-hui, head of the non-profit Korea Cyber Sexual Violence Response Centre, told AFP.

In this case the suspect was paraded in front of TV cameras while police raided her home to search for evidence. Authorities even launched a probe targeting those who shamed the male model online in an uncharacteristically swift response.

"The women saw how quickly...the police responded to this rare case in which the victim was a man...such unfair treatment fuelled the recent wave of anger", Seo said.

- 'Make change happen' -

Campaigners have called for harsher punishments for those who film, distribute and view such images. They have also urged tougher regulations to restrict the sale of high-tech spycam equipment.

But in a sign of the ugly fight ahead of them, many of the protesters at a recent rally kept their faces covered and declined to be photographed due to worries over personal safety, with previous participants becoming the targets of relentless online bullying.

Despite their fears, they refuse to back down.

"Seeing so many women gather together to speak up was a deeply empowering experience", protest organiser Ellin said.

"We have power. Together, we can make change happen", she said.

THE NEWS: Extreme makeover: Fukushima nuclear plant tries image overhaul

Extreme makeover: Fukushima nuclear plant tries image overhaul
source: AFP

POOL/AFP/File / Kimimasa MAYAMA Officials have been gradually trying to rebrand the Fukushima nuclear plant, bringing in school groups, diplomats and other visitors

Call it an extreme makeover: In Japan's Fukushima, officials are attempting what might seem impossible, an image overhaul at the site of the worst nuclear meltdown in decades.

At the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, there's a flashy new administrative building, debris has been moved and covered, and officials tout the "light" radioactive security measures now possible.

"You see people moving around on foot, just in their uniforms. Before that was banned," an official from the plant's operator TEPCO says.

"These cherry blossoms bloom in the spring," he adds, gesturing to nearby foliage.

If it sounds like a hard sell, that might be because the task of rehabilitating the plant's reputation is justifiably Herculean.

In 2011, a massive earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami that killed thousands and prompted the meltdown of several reactors.

It was the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, and has had devastating psychological and financial effects on the region.

But TEPCO officials have been gradually trying to rebrand the plant, bringing in school groups, diplomats and other visitors, and touting a plan to attract 20,000 people a year by 2020, when Tokyo hosts the Summer Olympics.

POOL/AFP/File / Kimimasa MAYAMA Upbeat messaging from Fukushima's operator TEPCO belies the enormity of the challenge to decommission the plant

Officials point out that protective gear is no longer needed in most of the plant, except for a small area, where some 3,000 to 4,000 workers are still decontaminating the facility.

Since May, visitors have been able to move around near the reactors on foot, rather than only in vehicles, and they can wear "very light equipment," insists TEPCO spokesman Kenji Abe.

That ensemble includes trousers, long sleeves, a disposable face mask, glasses, gloves, special shoes and two pairs of socks, with the top pair pulled up over the trouser hem to seal the legs underneath.

And of course there's a geiger counter.

The charm offensive extends beyond the plant, with TEPCO in July resuming television and billboard adverts for the first time since 2011, featuring a rabbit mascot with electrical bolt whiskers called "Tepcon".

But the upbeat messaging belies the enormity of the task TEPCO faces to decommission the plant.

It has installed an "icewall" that extends deep into the ground around the plant in a bid to prevent groundwater seeping in and becoming decontaminated, or radioactive water from inside flowing out to the sea.

POOL/AFP/File / Kimimasa MAYAMA About 100,000 litres of water still seeps into the plant each day, which requires extensive treatment to reduce its radioactivity

But about 100,000 litres (26,400 gallons) of water still seeps into the plant each day, some of which is used for cooling. It requires extensive treatment to reduce its radioactivity.

Once treated, the water is stored in tanks, which have multiplied around the plant as officials wrangle over what to do with the contaminated liquid.

There are already nearly 900 tanks containing a million cubic metres of water -- equal to about 400 Olympic swimming pools.

And the last stage of decommissioning involves the unprecedented task of extracting molten nuclear fuel from the reactors.

"There was the Chernobyl accident, but they didn't remove the debris," said Katsuyoshi Oyama, who holds the title of TEPCO's "risk communicator".

"So for what we have to do here, there is no reference."

AFP/File / CARMEN JASPERSEN Brothers Mischa (L) and Alexander Zverev of Germany, seen during a doubles match at a tournament in Halle, in June 2018

Third-ranked defending champion Alexander Zverev took bragging rights in his sibling rivalry, beating 15th-seeded older brother Mischa 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday to reach the ATP Washington Open quarter-finals.

It was the first ATP meeting for the German siblings, 21-year-old top seed Alex besting 30-year-old Mischa as he rarely did in boyhood battles.

"We had a great time," Alex said. "I was happy and enjoying the moment. We played near our best. It was unbelievable.

"I just hope it happens again and I hope it happens at later stages of bigger tournaments. I hope we meet again someday in a final."

Mischa was nearly in tears at the start at a family dream come true.

"When we came back to the benches I had to fight back my tears," he said. "It was a big day, big match. It was very emotional for me. It was just a great day."

Next up for Alex will be Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori, who dispatched Canadian ninth seed Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7/1), 6-3.

GETTY/AFP/File / Kevin C. Cox Noah Rubin of the US serves during the BB&T Atlanta Open tournament in Georgia, on July 26, 2018

"There will be a lot of points from the baseline," Nishikori said. "I've got to work the point and play more aggressively and move the ball around."

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray of Britain, in his first hardcourt event after an 11-month layoff with a right hip injury, was set to play the last match against Romanian Marius Copil.

The rain-hit US Open tuneup event also saw US second seed John Isner ousted by 152nd-ranked compatriot Noah Rubin 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) and Japanese third seed Naomi Osaka, nagged by a right leg injury, lost to Poland's Magda Linette 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the companion WTA event.

"It definitely bothers me a bit out there on the court, but it isn't anything serious," Osaka said. "We're going to prep and get healthy."

Alex broke Mischa for a 5-3 lead and held again to win the all-Zverev first set in 29 minutes. Alex broke again in the penultimate game and held once more to win after one hour and 51 minutes on a forehand drop volley winner.

"I actually played better than in practice," Mischa said. "When he hits certain shots, I know what he's thinking. But that's a disadvantage, too, because he knows what I'm thinking."

The elder Zverev, smiling, walked around the net and shared a hug with Alex, patting him on the back as they parted for their chairs.

"I had a big smile. I played OK. I was able to keep up with him," said Mischa, to which Alex replied, "That comes from a person who kicks my ass every single time in practice."

Mischa won his first ATP title in June at Eastbourne, a feat he credits his brother for helping him to achieve.

"It was something I always wanted," Zverev said. "It was him being young and being overly positive that helped me be young, keep working hard and achieve my dream."

Alex noted his mother watches more of Mischa's matches, saying, "Apparently the dog has to go to the bathroom every time I play."

- Low-energy Isner ousted -

Ninth-ranked Isner, fatigued after a first-ever Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon and an Atlanta title run, blamed his low-energy outing on recent deep tournament runs and rain.

"Noah played with more energy. He was just tougher than I was. He was hungry out there," Isner said. "If I would have won, I don't know what I would have done."

Rubin later lost 6-3, 6-2 to Russian 16th seed Andrey Rublev, who eliminated American Tommy Paul 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

Isner plays at Canada and Cincinnati the next two weeks in major tuneups for the US Open, which starts August 27.

"For me, this could very well be a good loss. I need a little rest. There are some big tournaments coming up. I want to be full of energy for those.

"It's unfortunate the rain has wreaked havoc so far. It tires you out. It's mentally taxing. You're sitting around hours on end."
