How Buhari and I rigged ANPP primaries against Okorocha in 2003 – Bafarawa

How Buhari and I rigged ANPP primaries against Okorocha in 2003 – Bafarawa

Attahiru Bafarawa, former governor of Sokoto State, has said he manipulated the presidential primary of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) against Rochas Okorocha to favour Muhammadu Buhari in 2003.

Buhari eventually got the party’s nomination but lost to Olusegun Obasanjo in the presidential election.

Bafarawa, who was doubling as the party’s chairman then, said Okorocha was set to pick the ANPP presidential ticket following a mock primary conducted before the nomination convention.

According to him, Okorocha came first, winning 27 of the 36 states and the FCT, while Buhari could only win five.

He made these revelations in a new book which will be launched on Thursday in Abuja, ‘Politics as Dashed Hopes in Nigeria’, written by Auwala Anwar, PhD, and former special assistant to the president on FCTA from 2004-2007

Anwar narrated how Bafarawa cajoled the state chairmen of the party to support Buhari after they had said they would not vote for him in the primary.

He wrote: “Buhari was not even able to secure all the 7 votes from his geo-political zone (north-west). When Bafarawa saw how dismally Buhari’s performance had been, he not only suspended the meeting for a break but also requested the state chairmen to stay behind for some announcements. He later cajoled the chairmen and explained to them that his preference was for Buhari to emerge the winner. In response, they all assured him that, although they were ready to do whatever he requested, as their leader, they were still not inclined to vote for Buhari.

“On enquiry, the chairmen explained that it would be foolish for them to vote for someone who did not even know their names. They charged that whenever he came across them, the best he could do to address them was to use generic terms of “Mister” or “Alhaji,” depending on whether a chairman came from the South or the North, respectively. They sensed the futility of supporting someone who did not bother to know them while he was seeking for their support.”

The preview copy of the book, published by Safari Books, quoted Bafarawa as saying in an interview with the author: “I appealed to the chairmen to change their mind because of the prospects of the party at the polls if it were Buhari that emerged as our flag-bearer. I also directed one of my staff, Abdullahi Bida, a relation to Buba Galadima, to give each of them five hundred thousand naira (500,000). I later called General Buhari to meet me at the Niger State Governor’s Lodge, where I was staying. He came around 4 a.m. together with Sule Hamma.

“I informed him about the efforts I had made to turn the table against Rochas. I also explained to him that I had arranged for a private meeting between him and the state chairmen, later at 2 p.m. Furthermore, I begged him to be patient with all the criticisms and the complaints they would lodge against him.

“Additionally, I gave him five million naira to give them to fuel their vehicles back to their respective states. He collected the money and thanked me for all the trouble that I took to see him through. He later handed over the money to them at the end of their meeting.”

The author continued in the book: “The rigging of the mock election in favour of Buhari was not without resistance. Some of the southern aspirants, who learnt of the private meeting organised between Buhari and their state chairmen, invaded the venue and accused Bafarawa of nepotism. He responded by reminding them how he also arranged for similar meetings between some of them and the state chairmen.”

Southern aspirants withdrew from the convention, including Nnia Nwodo, now president of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in protest.

Nwodo famously made his “my heart bleeds for Nigeria” speech while pulling out from the race at the convention ground. Source:

Atiku explains his privatisation plan, says ‘under Buhari, NNPC MD awarded $25bn contract’

Atiku explains his privatisation plan, says ‘under Buhari, NNPC MD awarded $25bn contract’

The People s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday assured that his government would create wealth for women and youths through Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and privatization.

Reiterating his plan to privatise the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Atiku lamented that the Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, “unilaterally awarded” a $25bn under President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

Atiku spoke at the Lagos Island Club Quarterly Business Lecture.

In attendance were former President Olusegun Obasanjo, DG of the PDP presidential campaign, Bukola Saraki, national chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, among others.

Atiku on the power of SMEs stated: “80% of loans should go to women. We have moved 45,000 families out of poverty in my area. With small loans (N200,000), and we have a 98% recovery rate.”

“We will assist the SMEs to grow bigger and to be more productive. As we all know, small businesses offer the greatest opportunities for achieving inclusive, pro-poor growth, through increased self-employment.”

On privatization, he said: “The NNPC head in 2017, gave a contract of $25bn, without going through due process.

“If the organization is privatized, this will not be the case, since the organization would be profit-oriented and efficient. We will liberalize the economic space and privatize all ailing enterprises.

“In particular, the Atiku Plan will undertake a deregulation of the downstream sector of the economy, review the petroleum industrial bill and privatize all four state refineries that operate at only 10% of their installed capacities.

“We shall channel the proceeds from the privatization into a special fund for the development of education and health for Nigerians.

“Our privatization plan allows for sales of NNPC shares to Nigerians, on the Nigeria stock exchange, so that Nigerians can benefit when the company is resuscitated.” Source:

Onnoghen: Drama As APC Lawmakers Storm Senate To Stop PDP

Onnoghen: Drama As APC Lawmakers Storm Senate To Stop PDP

Some members of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in the Senate were at the National Assembly on Tuesday despite the cancellation of plenary by the leadership of the red chamber.

According to Punch Metro, the APC lawmakers were seen leaving the chamber for their offices after a brief discussion, while some PDP senators, who gathered in the foyer, left after they discovered that no activity was taking place in the chamber.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the APC senators wanted to ensure that their PDP colleagues did not outsmart them by sitting at plenary to discuss the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Findings revealed that a serving minister allegedly sent a text message to all APC senators on Monday evening, advising them not to take the senate leadership seriously following the cancellation of the plenary as they could hold a plenary session with their PDP colleagues.

The message read, “Distinguished APC senators, please ignore the announcement for the cancelation of the plenary slated for tomorrow (Tuesday) by making yourselves available as early as possible.

“It might just be a trick to enable them to perpetrate their usual coup, claiming the published notice did not emanate from the senate, thus it’s fake.

“Meanwhile they might have done their damage just as they did before when (Senate President, Bukola) Saraki, hijacked the Senate.”

Some of the top APC lawmakers contacted by our correspondent to know their mission at the Assembly refused to make any comments.

But those, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, confirmed that they were at the Assembly to stop their PDP colleagues from holding a plenary session.

A senator from the North- East said, “I came in here as early as 7.30am when I was told that PDP senators were around to discuss the Onnoghen issue.

“We had to come to ensure that the senate leadership did not trick us by holding an illegal plenary with the opposition senators.”

However, PDP senators, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they came around to check their offices since they were already in Abuja for Tuesday’s plenary before it was cancelled at the last minute.

Meanwhile, the Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, has told APC caucus members to stop spreading misleading information that the Senate had decided to file a case in court challenging Onnoghen’s suspension.

Olujimi said this while reacting to a statement credited to the Senate Majority Leader, Ahmad Lawan, in which he dissociated the APC caucus from the decision of the Senate to seek the interpretation of the law in the Supreme Court.

She said, “I am surprised that a few of my colleagues in the APC caucus are spreading disinformation that they were not party to the decision to file a case seeking the interpretation of the provision of the constitution concerning the President’s decision to suspend the CJN.

“Those who are saying this are just being mischievous. “They know such a decision is not meant for debate on the floor of the Senate. It is the prerogative of the presiding officer and in this particular case, majority of the people in Senate leadership suggested and supported the idea.” Source:

Breaking News: Pro-Ambode Group Storms Lagos Assembly, Protests Planned Impeachment

Breaking News: Pro-Ambode Group Storms Lagos Assembly, Protests Planned Impeachment

A group of protesters on Wednesday stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly to protest against the planned impeachment of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, Punch Metro reports.

The men and women, who carried banners with inscriptions of their agitations, said the removal of Ambode would disrupt the peaceful conduct of the general elections.

They asked the lawmakers to allow the governor complete his tenure.

The Assembly had accused the governor of gross misconduct and illegally spending from the 2019 budget, which had yet to be approved.

They had given the governor seven days to defend the allegations or risk impeachment.

Police vans were mounted at the entrance to the Assembly on Wednesday, as the protesters stood outside, singing solidarity songs.

One of the men, who identified himself as Jimoh, said Ambode did not deserve the treatment being meted out to him.

He said, “I am concerned as a Lagosian. His performance is visible. They should leave him alone. I was not paid to come for this protest. Nobody gave me anything. They should just allow him complete his tenure, which ends in a few months time.”

Punch Metro observed as of 11am that the number of the protesters keeps swelling. Source:

Onnoghen, Muhammad: NJC keeps Nigerians waiting

Onnoghen, Muhammad: NJC keeps Nigerians waiting

By Innocent Anaba and Henry Ojelu

With the controversy trailing the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari on the strength of a Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, ex-parte order and the swearing in of Justice Tanko Muhammad, as the acting CJN, yet to die down, many issues have continued to play out.

Buhari-Onnoghen-Tanko

Mr Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, in his advice to the National Judicial Council, NJC, before its meeting of January 29, posed several questions which he believes holds the answer to the constitutional issue facing the country.

“In the face of the serious allegations of infraction of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, should Onnoghen still continue to sit over cases that come to the Supreme Court which might include cases involving violation of the Code of Conduct?

*Was the conduct of the Chairman of the CCT in purporting to issue on January 23, 2019, an ex-parte order for the suspension of the CJN, after having adjourned the proceedings on January 22, 2019 to January 28, 2019 in accord with the provisions of Rule 212) already set out above and Rule 2 (5)(i) of the Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers which requires the judge to hear the other side before making such an order.

*Was it right for Justice Muhammad to have presented himself to the President to be sworn in as acting CJN to supplant the incumbent CJN, when it was clear from the provisions of section 292(1) and paragraph 21(b) of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution and decided cases that only the NJC has constitutional power to exercise disciplinary control over the CJN?

He noted that in dealing with this particular issue, the NJC should bear in mind the precedents of the 2006 Ekiti State Judiciary episode and the recent Abia State Judiciary incident.

Interestingly, the NJC in a statement after its January 29 meeting disappointed many Nigerians, who had expected perhaps a punchy response to the breach of Section 292 of the Nigerian Constitution by the president, which expressly provides that “A judicial officer shall not be removed from his office or appointment before his age of retirement except in the following circumstances –(a) in the case of –”Chief Justice of Nigeria, President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Grand Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and President, Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate.”

The NJC after its January 29 emergency meeting, meanwhile, gave Justice Onnoghen and Justice Muhammad, seven working days to respond to petitions filed against them, while it referred the petition against CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar to the Federal Judicial Service Commission, FJSC and fixed February 11, 2019 to reconvene.

Interestingly, no position was taken on President Buhari, who it was that caused the major breach, with the way and haste the executive pursued Onnoghen’s case and in turn, failed to follow due process.

The posers raised by Oyetibo, SAN, were parhaps conveniently skipped by the NJC, as the major issues agitating members of the legal community and ordinary Nigerians were not touched.

Though it may be argued that the matter is in court, as the Senate had gone to court, it’s however, clear from the position of the constitution that the only body vested with the power to call the president to order is the NJC, which ought to have put its foot down and rightly direct a return to status quo until matters are resolved.

According to the NJC, the petition against Justice Onnoghen was by Zikhrillahi Ibrahim of Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civil Education; Petition against Justice Ibrahim Muhammad, by Centre for Justice and Peace Initiative; Petition against Justice Muhammad, by Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, and petition against Mr Danladi Umar, Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal by Centre for Justice and Peace Initiative.]

This is coming as former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has petitioned the Chairman of CCT, Mr. Umar to the NBA’s Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, urging that his (Umar) name be struck out of the Roll of Legal Practitioners in Nigeria for violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct.

Agbakoba in the petition against Umar said: “On January 14, 2019, the CCT of which Mr. Danladi Umar is Chairman assumed jurisdiction in a matter against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen knowing the CCT had no jurisdiction in view of CCT’s own decision in the case of Justice Sylvester Ngwuta which also involved Asset Declaration.

“The Court of Appeal in Nganjiwa v. FRN (2017) LPELR-43391 (CA) held that allegations of misconduct against a serving judicial officer must first be referred to and handled by the National Judicial Council, NJC. It is only after the NJC had entertained and made a finding or pronouncement on the allegation against a judicial officer and recommended to the President or Governor as the case may be, the removal of such judicial officer, and the recommendation is accepted and acted upon by the appropriate authority, that the prosecuting agencies of the Federal Government can proceed against such judicial officer to make him face the full wrath of the law.

“Mr. Danladi Umar knew the state of the law yet acted otherwise. Mr Umar’s misconduct has created a constitutional crisis and brought great embarrassment to the legal profession.

“On January 23, 2019, the CCT of which Mr. Danladi Umar is Chairman issued an ex-parte order which on its face is clearly defective having not set out on record the counsel that made the application. This gives the impression the CCT may have drawn up the application on itself. This led the President of Nigeria to purportedly suspend the CJN, Justice Onnoghen and purportedly appoint an acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, as the acting CJN.

“Mr Umar’s misconduct has created a constitutional crisis and brought great embarrassment to the Legal profession.

“The Chairman of the CCT, Mr. Umar is on trial before the Federal High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja for allegedly demanding a bribe of N10 million from one Mr. Rasheed Taiwo in 2012. The alleged demand was made in relation to a case (CCT/ABJ/03/12) involving Mr. Taiwo, an offence contrary to Section 12(1) (a) and (b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2003.

“The Chairman of the CCT, Mr. Umar not being a judicial Officer is subject to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee. In the light of these violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct, we pray the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee direct that the name of Mr. Umar be struck out of the Roll of Legal Practitioners in Nigeria.”

On the January 23, 2019, ex-parte order, granted by Umar, another lawyer, Abiodun Owonikoko, SAN, had narrated the same thing, that the CCT had a day earlier, January 22, adjourned to January 28 to rule on arguments on a similar application, and said he was at a loss, how Umar a day after granted the same application ex-parte.

The propriety or otherwise of Buhari’s action has continued to elicit reaction, with some prominent lawyers, arguing for and against. Two prominent lawyers, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN and Chief Robert Clarke, SAN, support wholeheartedly the action of the President.

Stating his support for Buhari, Chief Clarke had said: “There there are two sides to the saga that is playing out, the legal and the political side. The legal side to CJN’s case is that due process was not followed before taking him to the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB. One will not think that the Federal Government or the Attorney- General is naive to know the position of the law as of today, before arraigning Onnoghen before the CC Tribunal. I took the matter to the Lagos High Court but it was rejected. I then took it to the Court of Appeal, where a ‘profound’ finding as to the due process to be taken when you want to arraign a sitting Judge, should be.

“On political side of the case, there is no way the Federal Government can make you and I know that a judge has so many accounts, has so much money in those accounts and has been operating those accounts. So, the only way they can bring this out to us is to follow this route that they have followed. While this is not the right route, there is a method in going through this path. They know they are not going to get success but they still want to inform you and I and the public that this is the rot in the Supreme Court; you and I must know.”

Prof. Sagay, also in support had said: “It is constitutional. If you look at Section 292 of the constitution, paragraph 1 clearly makes provision for that where the Chief Justice is guilty of a code of conduct.

“The provision is very clear. It states that where the Chief Justice is guilty of a breach of the code of conduct, he can be removed by an address of two-thirds majority of the Senate. It is quite clear that the Senate itself cannot initiate that address; there is only one person who can do that and that is the President.”

Disagreeing, Agbakoba, SAN, said: “This is the worst possible violation of Nigeria’s Constitution ever and a perversion of justice and the rule of law for the president acting in pursuance of orders from an inferior tribunal, namely the CCT, to suspend the CJN.

“This has raised major constitutional crisis and the Bar will hopefully resist this brazen assault to our Constitution. All Nigerians should feel assaulted by President Buhari’s illegal action and I urge that we take the strongest possible action to prevent Nigeria’s rapid descent to Constitutional impunity. Judges and lawyers must withdraw services until this is resolved.”

Also expressing his disagreement with the president’s action, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, said: “There is no known basis, legal, constitutional or moral, to hurriedly bypass courts of law, the judicial process and court orders, to illegally remove the CJN and swear in an Acting CJN.

The provisions of section 292(2) of the 1999 Constitution are quite clear on how the CJN can be removed from office. Aside sections 153,158 and parts 1 and 2 of the 3rd schedule to the Constitution which provide that a judicial officer cannot be removed from office until he has first been tried and dealt with by the NJC, section 292(2) makes it clear that the president can only remove the CJN from office before the age of his retirement,”acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate.”

The Judiciary in distress

When did the Senate meet to donate this power to the president? Never! The president has illegally and unconstituonally stripped both the judiciary and the Legislature bare of their constitutional functions, usurped their powers and enthroned maximum dictatorship over the affairs of Nigeria, like Louis X14 once did when he stood in front of parliament, beat his chest imperiously and declared:”l’est tat c’est moi”(I am the state).

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA described the development as a step towards anarchy and demanded its immediate retraction. The body said: “It is unfortunate that the Executive Branch of Government purports to suspend the CJN on the basis of an alleged ex-parte order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal – the same Tribunal that, to the knowledge of the Executive, had, only the first previous day, January 22, 2019 adjourned its proceedings to January 28, 2019 and has before it a Motion on Notice that is yet to be argued, seeking the same reliefs as were contained in the purported ex-parte application, to wit, the state capital suspension of the CJN, amongst others.

“We call on the Federal Government to avert the looming constitutional crisis precipitated by its ill-advised action. In particular, the Nigerian Bar Association demands the reversal of the purported suspension of Justice Onnoghen, We also call on the National Assembly to assert its constitutional authority and powers and prevent this slide into chaos and erosion of the rule of law.

It is also important to note that the former President of the Court of Appeal’s matter, Justice Ayo Salami is different from Onnoghen, as he refused his elevation to the bench of the Supreme Court. His matter was rightly handled by the NJC. It was the NJC that sanctioned the actions taken against him eventually by the government in power then.

Despite the contrasting opinions, section 292 of the Constitution which deals with the removal of the CJN, does not distinguish temporary removal (suspension) from a permanent removal (sack). Below is the law as reproduced verbatim from the Constitution:

“A judicial officer shall not be removed from his office or appointment before his age of retirement except in the following circumstances –

(a) in the case of – “Chief Justice of Nigeria, President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Grand Kadi of the Sharia Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and President, Customary Court of Appeal of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, by the President acting on an address supported by two-thirds majority of the Senate.”

That is the law today. Source:

APC and PDP as metaphoric ‘Egypt’

APC and PDP as metaphoric ‘Egypt’

PDP Flag

From North to South, East to West of Nigeria, the socio-economic indices of good things of life for Nigerians point to the negative side. Only the political office holders in the ruling parties see and feel the promised ‘CHANGE’.

The masses only hear of it. Our global rankings in (anti)corruption, insecurity, education, health, infrastructure, poverty, unemployment, peace and conflict continue to be dismal. We lost gallant men in their prime in the war front and many educated and skilled Nigerians are leaving the country in droves in a renewed form of brain drain. But the dispatched speakers of the ruling party want us to believe everything is fine. We are winning the war on terrorism yet our fighter jet crashed with five breadwinners. Locations are being taken in Borno by the Terrorists; the Borno state Governor is crying and pleading with the Prince of Daura to rescue the hapless while that of Zamfara will not mind a declaration of state of emergency in his state to stop the arson and killings. Turn southward; you are treated to unpleasant cases of kidnapping, rape, suicide, abduction, armed robbery, employment fraud, and the latest ‘pantocrazy’ (the act of stealing undies for ritual purposes). Certainly, the lived experiences of the majority do not tally with those in power. I have heard the National leader of the All Progressive Congress, Senator Bola Tinubu and the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at different times saying that Nigerians (Nigeria) will not go back to ‘Egypt’. I therefore attempt a deconstruction of what ‘Egypt’ indicates with a view to knowing if Nigerians are enjoying in the Promised Land (change), why would they contemplate or prefer Egypt? My analysis will show if we are still in the wilderness as Israelites enroute the Promised Land.

A characteristic of our politicians is their dexterity in deploying religion to divide and rule. Asiwaju deploys ‘Egypt’ as a metaphor for ‘PDP days’ but nothing has characteristically shown a radical departure from the PDP years. The Biblical notion of ‘Egypt’ was a land of enslavement of Israelites whom God delighted in. Moses was saddled with the task of bringing them out of the territory of fascist Pharaoh whose people extorted them for dirty jobs. People would not have yielded to the call but for the Promised Land which was said to be a land that would be flowing with milk and Honey (Exodus 13:5). The road to the Promised Land was not smooth but the driver of the change (Moses and Aaron) did not engage in blame game. Rather, they listened to their people, gave reassurances, provided solutions and absorbed negative comments. For instance, at the Red Sea, Israelites queried Moses for taking them out of Egypt to die in the wilderness. When the red sea parted ways for them to escape being recaptured, they believed in the God that sent Moses. In the wilderness of Shur, they complained ‘what shall we drink’ because the water in Shur was bitter. Moses sought God’s intervention again and made the water sweet. Later in the journey, they complained of hunger. Considering their present situation of ‘lack of food’ they felt they were better in Egypt where they still had something to eat. They felt it was better to be in Egypt than for them to die in the wilderness of hunger. Again, Moses and Aaron, through God, met the food needs through the provision of Manna which they had for forty years.

Unlike what Asiwaju Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo who mostly blame PDP without providing succour to the pains and agony that Nigerians face, Moses and Aaron never blamed anyone for the condemnation they received from Israelites as they journey through the wilderness. As a matter of fact, they turned to the one who gave them the assignment and provided solution. Only after meeting the needs of their people did they reel out rules to follow and not the other way round. It follows therefore that anytime Nigerians reconnects to their pre-2015 era, they are symbolically saying the past Tinubu and Osinbajo condemn was better for them. Unlike Moses and Aaron who had listening ears, provided solutions and reassurances as well as absorbed insults, the duo of Asiwaju and VP Osinbajo would not display such. Even if truly President Muhammadu Buhari represents Moses and VP Osinbajo as contemporary Aaron, their disposition to complaints is sufficient reason to make Israelites (Nigerians) to be sceptical of their status as true CHANGE agents.

Coincidentally, while they paint ‘Egypt’ as undesirable destination to us, Nigerian politicians in practise never foreclose returning to ‘Egypt’ or working with ‘Egyptians’. Those who think they are Israelites, like VP and Asiwaju have embraced ‘Egyptians’ like Minister Rotimi Amaechi, Musiliu Obanikoro, Godswill Akpabio and a host of others. Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and other governors who decamped to PDP will now refer to APC as ‘Egypt’ and PDP as the vehicle to the Promised Land. Let us not forget that the PDP candidate oscillates between ‘Israel’ and ‘Egypt’ since 1999 targeting a Promised Land. We can also see a formerly trashed leader being recycled to lead campaign of NEXT LEVEL. This leader will stand on the same podium with ‘Egyptians’ to preach to people not to return to Egypt. Who is fooling who?

For three and half years, they were distant and disconnected but they now enter huts to snap pictures with poor women in Saki, Iseyin and distribute ‘empowerment’ packages in market places. If they had moved around early enough in the administration, they would know how poverty is experienced by the downtrodden which have now unfortunately multiplied. Our present situation tallies with the experiences of the Israelites. But are we being led by destiny manipulators or ‘Moses’ with a true Promised Land of milk and honey agenda? Can we regard our present higgledy-piggledy state of affairs as our wilderness? If the present drivers see our complaints as a non-issue how are we sure they know the road to the Promised Land where milk and honey would flow? The dilemma before electorates in February General elections is to choose between half of dozen and six. Will Nigerians oscillate between Egypt and the Promised Land? Will eight years of PMB remove us from this wilderness? What I know is that neither PMB nor Atiku is the person to take us to the Promised Land if at all such exists. Do we have any of the contenders to Aso Villa who has a listening ear and capable of providing solutions and reassuring his/her people during trouble? Hmm…scarce…very scarce. The outcome is almost certain. We are likely returning to ‘Egypt’ whether APC or PDP emerges winner. This is the dilemma of the 2019 polls.

Onnoghen: Litigants beat Port Harcourt NBA Chairman to pulp over protest in court

Onnoghen: Litigants beat Port Harcourt NBA Chairman to pulp over protest in court

Chairman of the Port Harcourt branch of the Appeal Court, Sylvester Adaka was beaten to pulp for leading members of the NBA to disrupt proceedings in the Appellate court.

Adaka was beaten “black and blue” by supposedly anxious litigants whose case was being heard.

DAILY POST reports that the Appeal Panel led by Justice A.A Gumel was in session in the stay of execution application filed by the All Progressives Congress, in Rivers state.

Sacked Governorship candidate of the APC, Tonye Cole and other candidates of the party for the general elections were already seated for the hearing of the matter which had commenced before the NBA members invaded the court.

The three-man panel led by Justice Gumel were thrown into panic.

Reacting to the invasion, Justice Gumel condemned the court invasion by the NBA protesters saying, “The action of NBA is a complete desecration of the court. The NBA would have formally communicated their position to the court before carrying out their protest.

“There are ethics in this profession. The Bar is mandated by any means whatsoever to respect the Bench. Unfortunately, what we have seen is the opposite. The court is a sacred place”.

On his part, Chairman of the PortHarcourt branch of the NBA , Sylvester Adaka said their protest as the Court of Appeal was peaceful adding that it was not politically motivated.

He held that the protest was aimed at protecting the rule of law just as he clarified that the NBA contacted the Chief Registrar of the Appeal Court on the protest.

However, after the incident the court went ahead to hear the Appeal of the APC against the ruling of Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court restraining INEC from including the APC in the 2019 elections in Rivers state which was later adjourned till January 31st, 2019.

Adjourning the matter, Justice Gumel Said the parties failed to serve the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC who is the main factor in the matter. Source:

Buhari planning to manipulate polls, Moghalu alleges

Buhari planning to manipulate polls, Moghalu alleges

By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA—The candidate of Young Progressives Party, YPP, for the February 16, 2019 presidential election, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has alerted that assaults on the judiciary and other arms of government by President Muhammadu Buhari were part of the plot being orchestrated by the administration to rig the poll.

Kingsley Moghalu

Moghalu, who spoke at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja, lamented that the events unfolding ahead of conduct of the general elections vividly portrayed that the country is under a military dictatorship.

The presidential hopeful, while urging Nigerians to resist the alleged plans to manipulate the poll results, pointed out that the refusal of President Buhari to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law was also part of the rigging plans.
According to him, “I believe that Nigeria must have free and fair elections in 2019. I believe the current government is planning to rig the elections. I believe that the people of Nigeria should not let them get away with it.

“The signs are all there, the refusal of the president to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law, what is happening with the judiciary, the orchestrated assault on the independent arm of government tell us very clearly that we are in a military dictatorship, masquerading as a democracy.

“But the final coup is the elections of 2019, where the people will reject President Buhari because of his poor performance, not for anything persnal. Buhari has been a failure and if they don’t want to accept the will of the people, then, we should get ready because the people of Nigeria will reject any attempt to thwart their will.” Source:

TETFund and politics of sacking, reappointment

TETFund and politics of sacking, reappointment

Suleiman Elias Bogoro

To many Nigerians, politics has become a way of life to the extent that fundamental values are sometimes sacrificed to promote and perpetuate political correctness. The latest development in Nigeria’s education sector will appear to lend credence to that as the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, was said to have sanctioned the removal of Abdullahi Baffa as the boss of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Head, Education Desk, Iyabo Lawal, writes.

“Sir! Welcome! We’re happy! We’re happy!” some of the workers at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) said in shrieks, following the sack of their former boss, Abdullahi Baffa, and the assumption of the new Executive Secretary of TETFund, Suleiman Bogoro.

The termination of Baffa came like a thunderbolt from a gloomy blue sky on Monday, January 21 this year. His sacking also has a twist to it as contained in the statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The terse statement, signed by the ministry’s spokesman, Ben Goong, said, “The Federal Government has approved the reinstatement of Prof. Suleiman Elias Bogoro as the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. A statement from the office of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said the reinstatement of Prof. Bogoro is with immediate effect, with the same terms and conditions as it were in his previous appointment and as stipulated in the TETFUND staff conditions of service. Prof. Suleiman Bogoro was the Executive Secretary of TETFUND between April 2014 and February 2016.”

To many observers, it appears the government had to sacrifice Baffa in order to recall Bogoro because the government refused to give any reason for giving Baffa the boot.

But the sacked TETFund boss has since said he knew why he was kicked out: he was not playing ball with his principal, the minister of education.

In a recent interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation, Hausa Service, Baffa made some claims that should worry stakeholders in the sector and the Presidency that claim to be concerned about the dwindling fortunes of the educational system in Nigeria.

Before his sacking became public knowledge, some three days Baffa had received a call that Adamu was plotting his removal.

“The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, went to see the president (Muhammadu Buhari) clutching a file to report me – demanding my ouster. This is not the first time. For months he has been reporting me to the president, falsely accusing me. But the president resisted,” he disclosed in the interview.

What could have led to Baffa – who was once a special adviser to the minister – falling out with his former boss?
He explained: “On Saturday night, I received a call that the president has given a directive for my removal from office. I asked the person what my crime was that was reported to the president that warranted my removal. He said the minister reported to the president that I was inaccessible. (He also accused me of) insubordination and (that) I was granting press conferences without his consent.

“The issue that I was inaccessible, he – the minister – was the one that knows better I’m the easiest person for him to see because even my colleagues at the TETFund accused me that I spent more time in the ministry with the minister than in my office. All the time I have been with him in the ministry, I’m doing my work at the TETFund and doing his work at the ministry.”

The former TETFund boss admitted that he and the education minister have had some difficult times and that he was willing to discuss the issues with him. Yet, Baffa felt Adamu crossed his line at a point.

“If you received a directive from your superior, you must do (what he has asked you to do). But if your superior asks you to do something that is not within the premise of the law and or is breaking the law, I will not do it because that will amount to subversion. I have no regret refusing that order because I will not betray the trust bestowed on me by Nigerians and the president,” he revealed matter-of-factly.

Then, Baffa added to prove his truthfulness: “You can go and ask him. Eight months ago, Adamu Adamu sent his biggest contractor to me and the contractor told me that the minister is angry with me on three things. He mentioned one and two issues and the third issue: he said that I shared over N200 billion to tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Even if I am collecting 10m from the institutions I could not have collected over N20 billion.

“Where is the money? Let me tell you, since I began this job I did not collect not even 10, one or even N1 from any institution. If there’s any school that I requested a percentage of the money I disbursed to them, I will be willing to accept a death penalty.”

Analysts have since expressed fears at the rate Baffa was going before his eventual ack. He was accused of “arrogance,” as well as lack of “proper cooperation” with the minister.

Another angle to Baffa’s crisis was the fact that he enmeshed himself in Kano politics to the extent that he was not always available for the TETFund job. His aggressive politicking also made the minister to be unhappy with Baffa,” the source added.

The former TETFund chief recently established a support group named ‘One 2 Tell 10’, in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

He also recently announced a donation of N2 million on behalf of the group and another N3 million donated by friends of the President Buhari’s government to victims of Kano fire incidents.

Bogoro was first appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan; following his alleged nomination by Adamu Muazu, who then was the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was, however, removed in February 2016 by Buhari, on the allegation of the agency’s donation to Jonathan’s campaign in 2015.

But, Bogoro was later proved innocent. It remains to be seen if in the future Baffa would also get a reprieve like Bogoro.

Between 1994 and 1999, Mallam Tijani Abdulkadir led TETFund; between 1999 and 2007, Mallam Mustapha Jaji was the agency’s executive secretary; others were Prof. Mahmood Yakubu (2007 – 2012); and Mallam Aliyu Na’iya (2012 – 2016 in capacity).

Prior to his reinstatement, Bogoro served as TETFund executive secretary between April 2014 and February 2016 and was kicked out of office by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. He and 25 other directors-general’s appointments were terminated having spent less than two years in office – then Baffa took over in August 2016 only to be removed this January.

Though disconcerted about his current predicament, Baffa said he had helped TETFund to achieve a 93.5 percent improvement in how tertiary institutions access fund from the agency.

This was possible, according to him, as a result of the introduction of the Access Clinic and Budget Defence sessions that opened up processes pertaining to the fund. For a while, it had not been easy to access the fund.

TETFund was established as an intervention agency under the TETFund Act. It is charged with the responsibility of managing, disbursing and monitoring the education tax to public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

To achieve the above objectives, TETFund Act, 2011 imposes a two percent education tax on the assessable profit of all registered companies in Nigeria. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is empowered by the Act to assess and collect education tax.

The fund administers the tax imposed by the Act and disburses the amount to tertiary educational institutions at federal and state levels. It also monitors the projects executed with the funds allocated to the beneficiary institutions, specifically for the provision and maintenance of essential physical infrastructure for teaching and learning; instructional material and equipment; research and publication; academic staff training and development.

It also caters for any other need, which in the opinion of the Board of Trustees is critical and essential for the improvement of quality and maintenance of standards in the higher educational institutions.

It will appear that the crisis of leadership in the agency is a transplant of a political tussle between the PDP and elements of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

There are media reports that by replacing Baffa with Bogoro, the Presidency intended to break the ranks of the speaker’s constituency and stop his return to the national assembly.
There are also reports that Baffa was fired for opposing the candidacy and re-election of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Yet, the pleasant reactions at TETFund that greeted the second coming of Bogoro might have suggested that he is the man for the job and was unjustly removed at the time.

Bogoro was a former lecturer with the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU). Following his removal as TETFund boss in 2016, Bogoro went back to ATBU and continued with his teaching job until his reinstatement. He hails from Bogoro local government area.

“Although some people may give the appointment a political undertone because it is the political season, to me his appointment has to do with his track records during his first tenure as TETFund chief. He is my colleague at ATBU and I know the kind of person he is,” said Simon Yalams, an associate of Bogoro.

While commending the sack of Baffa, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to go after the erstwhile TETFund boss.

“NANS sees this action as a long overdue one, in the interest of the nation’s integrity, as NANS and some civil society groups had long protested and demanded the sack of the TETFUND executive secretary months ago. NANS calls on the EFCC to immediately arrest and subject the sacked executive secretary to detailed probe on his activities through his days in office,” the student body said in a statement.

Adamu, a polyglot – being fluent in Arabic, Persina, Fulfulde, Hausa and French – has, however, kept Nigerians, especially stakeholders in the education sector guessing what led to the termination of appointment of Baffa and the reinstatement of Bogoro.

In all, observers of the sector believe that the government has once again allowed politics to triumph over progress and development.

Natural cures for depression validated

Natural cures for depression validated

Scent leaf

Depression is fast becoming as common as malaria in Nigeria. Unfortunately, most of the estimated 60 million people with the mental health disorder do not know they have the condition and some are living in denial- “I cannot be ‘mad’. God forbid.”

Depression is a common mental disorder, characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.

In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Depression is treatable, with talking therapies or antidepressant medication or a combination of these.

Unfortunately, some antidepressants come with unpleasant side effects including suicidal tendencies.

However, scientists have validated some natural therapies to effectively treat the mental disorder.

Top on the list is regular exercise. Others are lettuce, scent leaf/holy basil (Ocimum gratissimum/nchuanwu in Ibo, Effirin in Yoruba), green tea leaves (Camelia sinensis), bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), coffee and Ganoderma mushroom.

Exercise does beat depression
Scientists have found some concrete evidence that exercising a little bit every day does reduce depression symptoms and boost overall mood.

For years, studies have found a connection between working out and lower depression risk – we all know exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy.

But until now, there was no evidence to show a causal relationship when it came to depression – whether physical activity really did affect the condition, or simply that people with depression exercised less.

Now, a team of investigators has used a novel research method to strongly support physical activity as a preventive measure for depression. While many studies have found associations between greater levels of physical activity and lower rates of depression, a key question has remained — does physical activity actually reduce the risk of depression or does depression lead to reduced physical activity? Now a team led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), United States (US), investigators has used a novel research method to strongly support physical activity as a preventive measure for depression.

Their report is being published online in JAMA Psychiatry.
“Using genetic data, we found evidence that higher levels of physical activity may causally reduce risk for depression,” says Karmel Choi, PhD, of the Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics Unit in the MGH Center for Genomic Medicine, lead author of the report. “Knowing whether an associated factor actually causes an outcome is important, because we want to invest in preventive strategies that really work.”

The technique used in the study — Mendelian randomization — uses gene variants to study the effects of a non-genetic factor in a different approach from that of traditional research. The gene variants are studied as a type of natural experiment in which people show higher or lower average levels of a factor like physical activity that are related to gene variants they have inherited. Because genetic variants are inherited in a relatively random fashion, they can serve as less biased proxies to estimate the true relationship between physical activity and depression. This approach can also determine which of two traits is actually causative — if levels of trait A affects the levels of trait B but levels of trait B do not affect levels of trait A, that implies that trait A leads to trait B, but not vice versa.

For this study, the researchers identified gene variants from the results of large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) that were conducted for physical activity in the U.K. Biobank and for depression by a global research consortium. GWAS results for physical activity were available for two different measures: one based on 377,000 participants’ self-reports of physical activity and the other based on readings of motion-detecting sensors called accelerometers, worn on the wrists of more than 91,000 participants. The GWAS for depression was based on data from more than 143,000 participants with and without this condition.

The results of the Mendelian randomization study indicated that accelerometer-based physical activity, but not self-reported activity, does appear to protect against the risk of depression. The differences between the two methods of measuring physical activity could result not only from inaccuracies in participants’ memories or desire to present themselves in a positive way but also from the fact that objective readings capture things other than planned exercise — walking to work, climbing the stairs, mowing the lawn — that participants may not recognize as physical activity. The analysis revealed no causal relationship in the other direction, between depression and physical activity.

“On average,” Choi says, “doing more physical activity appears to protect against developing depression. Any activity appears to be better than none; our rough calculations suggest that replacing sitting with 15 minutes of a heart-pumping activity like running, or with an hour of moderately vigorous activity, is enough to produce the average increase in accelerometer data that was linked to a lower depression risk.”
Lettuce ‘cure’ for depression, stroke, thromboembolism

Can eating meals rich in lettuce provide relief from anxiety, depression, chronic pain, sleeplessness, indigestion, lack of appetite, blood clots, heart attack, stroke and thromboembolism?

Botanically called Lactuca sativa, lettuce, a leafy vegetable, belongs to the Asteraceae family. Lettuce has been traditionally used for relieving pain, inflammation, insomnia, anxiety, neurosis, dry coughs, rheumatic pain, stomach problems including indigestion and lack of appetite. Moreover, the therapeutic significance of lettuce includes its anticonvulsant, sedative-hypnotic and antioxidant properties.

However, a recent study has validated lettuce for the treatment of anxiety, depression, chronic pains, sleeplessness, indigestion, lack of appetite, blood clots, heart attack, stroke and thromboembolism.

Thromboembolism is the formation in a blood vessel of a clot (thrombus) that breaks loose and is carried by the blood stream to plug another vessel.

The study published in BMC Complement Alternative Medicine is titled “Evaluation of analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and anti-coagulant properties of Lactuca sativa (CV. Grand Rapids) plant tissues and cell suspension in rats.”

The researchers concluded: “The present experimental findings of different extracts suggest that Lactuca sativa is a broad spectrum pharmaceutical crop conforming significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and anti-coagulant properties that has potential to replace synthetic drugs.

“More interestingly, cell suspension exudate showed prominent results in all the assays which is the main point of interest because valuable secondary metabolites and economically important substances can be produced in bulk from plant cell suspensions in simple, cost-effective and reproducible way. However, advance study is needed to explore the precise mechanism of action the active components.”

Several studies have shown that the function of the anticoagulant drugs is to inhibit blood clotting, which is the major cause of heart attacks and strokes. Anticoagulant drugs can be used with a number of diseases when there is a high risk of blood clots. The researchers said that since anti-coagulants are used for the cardiac problems, instead of relying on blood thinners, physicians could shift to herbal medicine. It has been reported that antioxidants can counteract the haematological and blood coagulation disturbances, oxidative stress, and hepatorenal (liver and kidney) damages.

The researchers added: “Anticoagulants play an essential role as mediators for the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic disorders. Due to their pharmacological possessions, plants can serve as the sources for the investigation of new compounds with anticoagulant properties. There is convincing scientific indications representing that the use of phytochemicals with anticoagulant effects and dietary anticoagulants can eventually eliminate or reduce the risks of thromboembolic diseases.

“Here we report the L. sativa a herbal drug for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and anti-coagulant activities of the seeds and leaf extracts along with the cell suspension exudate. We obtained very interesting and promising results which elucidate the importance of lettuce as a traditional medicine.”

The current findings showed that aqueous and methanol and chloroform; 1:1 (MC) extracts of seed have the least immobility time in the forced swimming test, which could act as an anti-depressant on the central nervous system. The leaf extracts and cell suspension exudate also expressed moderate anti-depressant activities. In anticoagulant assay, the coagulation time of aspirin (positive control) and MC extract of leaf was comparable, suggesting strong anti-coagulant effect. Additionally, no abnormal behaviour or lethality was observed in any animal tested.

“Conversely, if a condition such as an inflammation of the paw, serves to decrease the response latency, it is said to induce hyperalgesia. Inflammation is a condition involving confined increase in the amount of leukocytes and various complex mediator molecules. The most common screening method of acute inflammation has been the prevention of edema in rats by induction of carrageenan. It is believed that the COX (cyclooxygenase) enzyme involved in inflammation can be inhibited by NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce the edema. But NSAIDs have some side effects like renal and gastric toxicity. Medicinal plants are believed to be cost-effective and harmless source of novel biochemical constituents with strong therapeutic properties.”

Hyperalgesia is an increased sensitivity to pain, which may be caused by damage to nociceptors or peripheral nerves. Also, researchers have also successfully used lettuce to reduce anxiety (anxiolytic).

The study titled “Anxiolytic property of Lactuca sativa, effect on anxiety behaviour induced by novel food and height” was published in Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine.

The researchers from the Biochemistry and Applied Nutrition Discipline, Defense Food Research Laboratory Mysore-570011, India, concluded: “… that hydro-alcohol extract of L. sativa rich in polyphenols possess potent anxiolytic property.”

They further explained: “The hydro alcohol extract rich in polyphenols and other secondary metabolites is a potent anxiolytic agent. It has been established that there are lot of plant secondary metabolites like polyphenols and flavonoids being employed in the treatment of psychotic disorders especially for anxiety in traditional medicine practice, most of which directly or indirectly affect the central nervous system.

“Considering the varied important activities reported in traditional system of medicine about L. sativa, it was planned to study the effects of the extract of L. sativa leaves on anxiolytic properties in mice. Although anxiety is an important protective mechanism, it can become maladaptive and disruptive.

“Pathological anxiety, as manifested in anxiety disorders, is an anxious response that occurs out of proportion to the threat, becomes disruptive to daily life and causes suffering. Anxiety has been implicated in a number of psychiatric disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, depression, panic-attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorders and posttraumatic stress disorders.

“Anxiety alleviates the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species. Anxiety induces stress and activates the sympathetic nervous system, stimulating the release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla as a response to stressors fight or flight. Benzodiazepine, the most commonly prescribed treatment for anxiety disorders, has side effects such as sedation, myorelaxation, ataxia, amnesia and pharmacological dependence. Hence various plants are used in complementary and alternative medicines for management of anxiety.”

How herbal teas burst anxiety, depression, fatigue, others
Researchers have identified immune boosting herbs and mushrooms that could be effectively used to address executive stress and metabolic syndrome.

Top on the list are: Scent leaf/Holy basil (Ocimum gratissimum/nchuanwu in Ibo, Effirin in Yoruba), green tea leaves (Camelia sinensis), bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), coffee and Ganoderma mushroom.

Indeed, executive stress is on the rise due to crushing economic pressure on businesses, unrelenting competition, crazy work hours, downsizing, slashed budgets, and uncertainty.

Executives and middle managers alike are exhausted by their brutal schedules and the intense demands on them. Business leaders may be relieved to be working at all, but they are stressed out, anxious and sleep deprived. The result? Health problems, deteriorating relationships and weakened job performance.

Several studies have also shown that metabolic syndrome is on the rise.

According to a study published in Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders, the most prevalent metabolic disorders are diabetes mellitus, obesity, dyslipidemia, osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome, which are developed when normal metabolic processes are disturbed.

The study is titled “Targeting metabolic disorders by natural products.”

Several studies have shown that there is a challenge in the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders due to severe adverse effects of some synthetic drugs, their high cost, lack of safety and poverty in some conditions, and insufficient accessibility for the general population in the world.

The study concluded: “Since metabolic disorders are multifactorial, it seems that poly-herbal medications, or drug-herbal combination are needed for their treatment.”

Meanwhile, scent leaf is a relatively well-studied herb, with research that has demonstrated that it can radically and speedily improve anxiety and depression, and reduce stress – both physical and emotional.

In addition, scent leaf has the capacity to increase physical and emotional endurance thus increasing the resilience to all stressors. As already mentioned, it lowers blood sugar levels, which in turn reduces cravings and stabilises moods, and thus facilitates weight loss.

Scent leaf has been traditionally used to support people through times of stress, working as adaptogen (that is substance that balances and protects the body by improving resistance to any type of physiological or mental stress) and anxiolytic (decreasing anxiety). One of the most strongly supported actions of this herb is that of an adaptogen, with current research supporting its traditional use in managing acute and chronic stress and fatigue.

Chronic stress has been shown to increase the levels of oxidative stress and free radicals. Scent leaf enhances the levels and activities of endogenous antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes including glutathione and superoxide dismutase.

In a recent randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled trial researchers evaluated the efficacy of an extract of scent leaf in the symptomatic control of general stress. They concluded that the effect of holy basil supplementation over placebo on comparison was considerable for all stress parameters measured. The treatment showed 39 per cent improvement in general stress symptoms over and above the placebo. The significant finding in this study was the reduced intensity of forgetfulness, reduced symptom scores of sexual problems (stress-related), and the effective relief from frequent feelings of fatigue and sleep problems.

According to the Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders study, among 19 natural based drugs that have been approved for worldwide marketing between the years 2005–2010, seven were classified as natural products, 10 as semi-synthetic natural products, and two as natural product-derived drugs.

Some example of natural products for the management of executive stress and metabolic syndrome include: InterCEDD Health Products Limited (IHP) Ganoderma Green Tea and Coffee; Erovit-IHP “Age Redefinition”; IHP Vernonia Ocimum Tea “The Scented Bitters” made from Vernonia amaygdalina and Ocimum gratissimum; Immunovit “Immune Booster”; Virgin Coconut Oil “Drug Store in a Bottle”; Garcinia-IHP “The Cold Cap”; Moringa Oleifera “Tree of Life Series; and Bissap Tea “The Heart Insurance Tea.

IHP is a health and wellness-company specialized in high quality herbal and dietary supplements produced in the laboratories of International Centre for Ethnomedicine and Drug Development, InterCEDD. The company focuses on development, sales, and awareness of health and wellness products. IHP is also a member of a 20-year old group called Bioresources Development Group (BDG).
